Tips for Paint by Number - translucent paints that don't cover

Translucent, transparent, and semi-opaque paints can really ruin your day --and your painting. Here are a few tricks and tips I have learned while working with paint by number paints that are bad. Sometimes just lumping on a bunch of coats of paint will work, but what is the secret?

When I was younger, paint-by-number kits used oil paints, not acrylics. Oil was MUCH better at staying smooth and opaque. I miss that.

White paint pen over the small cells, putting 1-2 coats of CLEAR gesso over the entire canvas before starting and using flo aid are the techniques I've learned and have begun using with all of my projects.

I just use white acrylic paint pen to cover the numbers as I go.

I definetly reccomend doing more coats cuz u can just paint whole pic with one colour and then go paint some other paint and then come back and just add thicker layer and ur done, or i usually do this and im really happy wih me technique so :)

My tip is you should take some space and test if each colour is translucent and make a chart and then on the numbers where that paint is translucent paint a thin layer of white and then the numbered paint that way it will be more pigmented and u won't have to do many layers and waste paint

I found mixing the paint helps as it seems to separate sometimes and seems translucent or a thinker application but I always found it to dry almost like a clay and I end up using too much and not enough left over and have to replace the said colour with a similar one. Maybe more water and a mix before use and possibly a thicker application than other paints

One paint by number utuber said you can use rubbing alcohol to erase number before you paint it.

Yes absolutely! I have used the same brush sometimes for several kits before it gets frayed. If you treat them well they are actually not bad brushes.

Oh my gosh I'm sorry we never answered this. Yes you can keep using most of the brushes! As long as you treat them okay they should last for a few paintings. Be sure not to keep them in water and rinse them well after each session. Store them lying down on their side. Once they start to curl or fray it's time to replace them. If you keep reusing old brushes you will start to collect fresh brushes from your new kits. You can donate those to a charity shop along with all those pots of paint that are barely used.
