Hi Dr. Wang. I'm a first year resident in Pathology in Portugal and I'm absolutely loving it. Thank you for your insights on the residency and please continue making this videos as they are very helpfull. I am a resident in a relatively small hospital with few pathologists, and very busy ones, so I have many times to find my way of studying and doing thins by myself or with the help of my resident colleagues. I find your tips in grosing very helpfull and it is something that I invest most of my time, at least until now (6th month residency) as I find it a crucial basis of all that we do. I love GI pathology and also have interest in Dermatopathology as my hospital is one of the refence centers in the north of Portugal for this kind of pathology. I will do international internships in my last two years, and I would love to be able to experience pathology in the US. Thanks again and keep up the excellent work. Best regards from Portugal

Hi Dr. Wang, what have been some of the most stressful and satisfying parts about your first year of residency that you might be able to share? I just completed my PhD defense last Friday from NJMS and started 3rd year today and plan to go into Path. Not sure yet about what subspecialities I would be interested in but my thesis was on NK dysfunction in HCC and I worked closely with GI path fellows. Other than that, I would be interested in heme/path, dermatopath, or neuropath. I'm closely following your videos and watching them the second they come out! It's nice to see a Path youtuber for a change!!!! So refreshing!!

Congratulations! Please tell Dr. Fitzhugh and the other pathology attendings I say Hi when you do your pathology elective. I highly recommend you do an elective in July of MS4, that way you can get a feel how new PGY1s get trained. Feel free to reach out to me if you have questions when ERAS season comes along. As for your question, I'll definitely make a video addressing that soon!

Hi Dr Wang, it's nice to see a pathology KZbin channel. Can I know what's the difference between those who complete PhD in pathology Vs those who complete residency in pathology ?
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD 2 жыл бұрын
PhDs cannot practice clinical pathology like MDs who finish residency. PhDs may be able to act as directors of certain clinical pathology labs like clinical chemistry, but cannot practice clinical medicine like the MD counterparts.

Hi Dr.Wang. Love your videos. My favorite thing about is that you give very detailed and real-life explanations. What book do you recommend for learning grossing?
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD 2 жыл бұрын
I recommend using a free grossing manual! For example University of Chicago's: voices.uchicago.edu/grosspathology/gi-liver/colon-rectum-neoplastic/

Can you make a video about research? How many hours of research is usually the standard when applying for residency? How many publications (if any)? What types of research is important if you are interested in pathology residency?
@Baking_MD

Honestly, the research requirement for pathology residency isn't that big of a factor as it may seem. I think the numbers on the match results are inflated by the number of MD/PHDs that go into pathology. If you just want a pathology residency, then you can get in without any research. If you want to go to a top research program like MGH, you might need to do some. For me, I only had 2 papers where I was a middle author from my 2 years at NIH before I started medical school. I did no research whatsoever in medical school. Got interview invites from 28 of 30 residency programs (except MGH and Brigham).

Hi, I want to know as a pathologist can you also work in drug discovery, development, and testing like a pharmaceutical scientist would in creating and testing new medicine? Thank you and I love all your videos!
@Baking_MD

I imagine that may be possible if you worked at a pharmaceutical company, as there are always jobs for MDs there, especially as medical director for R&D teams; however, I am not very familiar with that pathway for pathologists.

Thank you so much. Very comprehensive and helpful. Just wondering how do you sign out with the attending? Do you sit at a biheader with a computer in front and do it there and then? or the attending sign it out on his/ her own after you typed it in?
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD 2 жыл бұрын
Both! Some attending I've worked with will have me dictate while at signout and they will finalize the case right there and then. Most however, have me type up the report and send it to their queue to signet on their own later. I think most attendings will be the in the second camp.

Hi am doing MD Pathology in India. Is it possible for me to work in usa after usmle and fellowship in Pathology in US medical College? Or should I do MD pathology again there?
@Baking_MD

Unfortunately you will have to repeat residency in the US if you want to work as pathologist in the US.

It's hard to say without knowing what the rest of your resume may look like. If you are already a competitive candidate, it would be better to apply this ERAS cycle. But if you need time to build up your CV, this may provide you that opportunity.
