Why seeds?? Been growing these for years, and I just divide the rhizomes (root clumps), which multiply like crazy without any work. Warm climates just leave in the ground, they will fill the whole garden!
@PHanomaly4 жыл бұрын
@@mani-cr7zd years and years! They form massive knotty clumps underground, and you can split with a shovel every few years to give room. All I do when it freezes it cut the stalks to the around-- they grow back in a few months.

PHanomaly Agree, but sometimes you don’t have rhizomes for the special colors and people are more willing to give you seeds. That’s my story for scarring and planting 70 special seeds( I was as happy as a duck). Only 2 germinated. 😭

In my second year playing with Canna. So glad I found your Canna tips last winter. Many tks! My divided/relocated batch (Cleopatra I think) survived and apparently like the sunny spot I moved them to in (late March) better than the full shade area they were originally found in. However Japanese Beetles REALLY went after the ones I moved into the sun. With a vengeance. I had to spray them. Interestingly, the canna that are 50 away, in full shade, have not been noticed by the beetles at all. THOUGH the plants in the shade have not bloomed yet. The ones out in the sun bloomed June 21st. I’m deadheading… so I’ll be curious to see what happens vertically! Cheers!

My cannas have never gotten that long but thank you for sharing what I must do to achieve it. Also when my cannas start growing really well in the summer I notice that the red color leaves them. I assumed it was because of birds sucking at them but is that really the case? I have a neighbor who has cannas & their red flowers stay up until the later fall without much color changes. We don't have a lot of foot traffic at our cannas like they do as well. I also cut my cannas down yesterday as it is fall and I did not want to have them get brown again when the temperature stays cold but was that ok to do so? I actually did not mess without them this past year the cannas where completely brown but the first day that I cut the dead ones down was the day after Easter this year and they eventually grew well again. I actually live in Easley, SC so it is awesome to know that you have these growing in the same state. Peace Love.

Hey Marly, Where I live they can stay in the ground year round. I only dig them out if I want to divide and share them. Try covering some of yours with a thick layer of mulch and leaving them for the winter. Thanks for your video. I'm in zone 9b and have cannas in my yard. I deadhead like you but my blooms tend to cause mine to fall over. You don't seem to have that problem do you? How can I get my stems stronger to support the flower blooms? They only fall over when there are big blooms.
@PHanomaly4 жыл бұрын
Wow, never had that problem, if anything, my flowers are wimpy compared to leaves. Sounds like a fertilizer that strengthens roots and leaf growth would help. I forget which of the 3 numbers on the fertilizer, like 10-10-10, one of those, when its higher. Ask a nursery for advice on the numbers. I think when the middle one is high, it's for more blooms.
@talkdirttome7894 жыл бұрын
Hey Gee, Thank you for your interest. I've never seen cannas fall over here in South Carolina. I like what PHanomaly wrote & think those recommendations are worth a try. Curious though...are you perhaps watering too much? Sometimes if roots are soggy, they can't provide support to the stems. Let us know what you learn!!! Best, Paula
@geeward15504 жыл бұрын
@@talkdirttome789 thanks for your response. That area doesn't really get too much water. Just a few minutes of drip irrigation. Like I said, they do fine until they reach a certain height and bloom. Will try a fertilizer that strengthens roots and let you know.

@robbieelmes3005 thank you for your comment and I apologize for the late response --- we had another baby in July so I'm just coming up for air now :) I actually do not know the answer to your question. Unfortunately as soon as my flowers boomed the leaves started turning brown. Do you know what I may have done wrong?
@talkdirttome7893 жыл бұрын
Hi EEE, it sounds like you did everything right. You may have given it too much water which could explain the leaves browning. Before you water, stick your thumb in the soil. If you don’t touch any dry soil, skip the watering that day.

Hi Renee, Thank you! I will continue to dead head them until the leaves brown and become unsightly. Then I will trim the entire plant to about 6 inches above the ground, add a layer of mulch and leave the bulbs in the ground for winter. Up north people have to remove the bulbs for winter but we're in SC so we have more mild winters and the bulbs can stay in the ground. Thank you for watching!

Since it’s a double n, it’s pronounced Can na, with love. It’s a two syllable word.
