You are correct that Harley Touring bikes are state of the art. My '07 Road Glide, with minimal and important engine work, runs much cooler than it did out of the factory. We also opened the breathing system from intake to exhaust. When I call on her to move, she does. I wouldn't sell that '07 for any amount of money. I've been all over the country on it, and I love the bike. I'm 70, and I still ride thousands of miles at a time with my 81 year old buddy. I can't keep up with him (he's crazy known as Wild Bill), and the other riders can't keep up with me.........on baggers. Bwahahahahahahahahahaha.

Greetings from the Philippines! I enjoyed this video so much. As a retired US Marine, I love the way you speak to "stupid comments" lol. I have been operating a motorcycle over here since 2019. That's when I went back to the states and took the HD Riding Academy Course. Plus we had to complete the MSF course first. Over here we have roads like in this video like there is no tomorrow. About 3 weeks ago I bought a beautiful, one owner 2016 HD Ultra Limited. Prior to this bike I was operating a 2003, 160 cc Mistah. I customized it to resemble what I called a cheap charlie Harley. I don't think I happened upon this video by accident. As you probably know I now own a "heavyweight bike". It's a HD 103, and I love it. I can take the tour pack off and it would look like a Street Glide. I served 21 years in the Marines as an infantry unit leader, and I don't like to be intimidated by anything. However, I am excited about what I am learning from this video as well as your other videos. Oh, I remember you telling us your motor officer was a former Marine Corps Drill Instructor. Sht, no wonder why I like your style of institution. You have no cut card. While watching this video, I have my head on a swivel looking through your windshield. I was visualizing like I was out there with you (I watched the backroad video before this one). It's fricking crazy to operate a motorcycle over here. Approximately 75% of the population have a motorcycle. So, I can assure you I will study this video often, and go out to the old Clark Air Force Base and "Practice, Practice, Practice". I have subscribed to your channel. Thank you very much.

Me and my buddy were on the Kancamagus, me on my BMW K1600GTL and him on his HD Road Glide. This is an awesome road, incredible twisty mountain highway in New Hampshire. We were crankin' pretty hard when he spotted a hyper car up ahead and tried catching him. Never saw anyone jam a HD like this guy. Thought he was going to touch an elbow down at one point. Never before that would I ever think a HD could do what his did. An amazing run, amazingly, without incident of any kind. HD's CAN handle. If only in the right hands.

I like the Harley touring bikes, but I much prefer my Gold Wing. Now THAT is state of the art. It matters not, though. I'll ride with anyone. I don't care what brand they ride. We all have preferences, and that's all it is. The ones I WON'T ride with are those who think their brand is the only brand that's any good and all others are inferior. I have no use for that attitude. Sadly, since I started riding in 1986, I've only seen that attitude in Harley riders and one time with a Ducati rider. I'm sure I could find people of all brands acting that way, but my experience has just been with Harley riders in that regard. Many of them loved to hate every other bike. No use for them. Thanks for all that you bring to the riding community, Jerry! I always make it a point to watch your videos I have on DVD a few times a year to refresh my memory on things. Good stuff!! Ride well.

I like the teaching they use in the UK, they teach the "vanishing point" to help with keeping the vision far ahead. It is a good way of gauging corner entry speed; if the point is coming towards you(closing up), you are going too fast for that corner, if it is moving away(the road seems to open up), you can maintain or go a bit faster. The correct speed will keep the point the same distance.

The best thing anyone can do to perfect a partnership with a motorcycle is practice...put miles behind you...you don't start really learning a bike until you've been at least 1,000 miles on it...then you start to learn every quirk unique to that bike & that alone will start to boost your confidence levels, but you've still got to keep at it...keep putting those miles on, go to an empty parking lot & practice close turning radius maneuvers...whatever it takes, there's no short cuts, there's only practice, practice & more practice...you can't be one enough with your machine, & the only thing that gets you there is saddle time...ride as often as you can too...you don't want those newly learned skills to get rusty...I ride a 23 yr old classic with an 88 CI mostly stock engine & it's got all the touring power it need & is pretty damn reliable by old HD standards...it can be very fun to tour on a classic bike that isn't exactly state of the art by today's standards...

"H.D. touring bikes are state of the art in heavyweight cruiser motorcycles" People often confuse complexity with "state of the art" ("If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance baffle 'em with b.s") but sometimes it's the simple things like those old looking fenders that actually keep water off of you or a big V-Twin that's buttery smooth on the highway without the need of 4 or 6 cylinders and water cooling. No valves to adjust or radiator/ coolant to worry about and 6 gallons of fuel so you can actually go somewhere. And under the old school looking tins on my FLHR there IS some state of the art- RDRS. Traction control, cornering ABS, TPMS, etc., etc. ..... looks can be deceiving. It's no substitute for what Jerry teaches but a little extra insurance can't hurt.

It really depends on the roads. Where he's riding is peaceful, barely a car on the road. When you go into the city or on the highway, that's when it gets interesting. I would absolutely love to ride such a bike and have a great appreciation for cruisers but to be honest, perhaps there is a reason why the adventure touring bikes were invented, so that you can go on every road, regardless of their condition and traffic. Only one other bike I can think of that just *might* equal or best a Harley; BMW. Just got back from a cross country trip, SF to North Carolina and back, about 8000 miles total with all the detours and what not. Bikes a 1999 BMW R1100RT I picked up recently with 40k on it. It's un-modified. NOTHING was done to make it more powerful, run cooler, smoother or last longer, it came from the factory that way. It's got more than enough power, it runs cool even in triple digit heat. Admitedly, the throttle bodies do have to be synched carefully but once they are... The"oilhead" boxer engine has a well deserved reputation for longevity and reliability. These motorcycles were made to run all day on the autobahn so... The one and only problem I had was a broken throttle cable. Otherwise? The bike ran like a watch. And on the twisties? It handled beautifully, even with a full load. Getting up to triple digits was no problem, just twist and go. Maybe not as fast as some bikes but even at those speeds the bike was stable as a rock. The bike came with ABS, linked brakes, fuel injection and electronic ignition in 1999. Definitely features worth having on any motorcycle.

Although A Twist Of The Wrist II, by Keith Code teaches to roll on throttle, while coming out of the corner. Works for me. It even seems to tighten up the line, when I sense I'm running a bit wide. I habitually do all my braking before entering the corner, to set my entry speed to about 20kmh higher than the advisory speed. - In Australia most twisty roads have Advisory Speed Signs, at the entrances of corners.

My current bike is a 94 Honda Magna, but have owned various bikes. I was taught to roll in power out, basically brake going in throttle out.
@motorman8572 жыл бұрын
I was taught that method as well and it works fine at a leisurely pace. However, even at a leisurely pace, if you are coming around a blind curve and an obstacle appears, you will have to straighten up the bike then begin braking. If you already have 2 to 5% front brake, the tendency to snatch or grab the brake, decreases greatly. In addition, going into the curve with a little front brake on, gives more traction on the front tire. Watch this link for a more precise explanation. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKqUcnx3mJxph9E

Jerry, what riders fail to do, is use the ride as a "practice ride" for the "game ride." Ride with the thought that you are practicing for the emergency. A lot of riders, that I have ridden with and observed, just ride like "Odie the dog" with no care about anything coming onto the road in front of them... They don't "practice" outside, inside, outside with the apex being viewed as their corner point. No, they just ride and then they get into that downhill, reduced radius, right hand turn where the hillside is limiting their view and voila a deer shows up. They go down like a brick... They started their turn too far inside, they were going a little too fast because their friend in front of them will "scare the deer off the road" and they were not using the three riding methods that would have saved them. They did not start on the outside of the lane. They did not trail break. Finally, they were not looking through the turn looking at the turn as the "vanishing point" to see if the turn was opening or tightening up. The vanishing point is where the road disappears into the mountain or hillside. The point tells you if the turn is going to be reduced or opens up.... Three things: Outside, trail break and vanishings point. Those three things are good to practice all the time for you never know when you are going to be tossed in "the game" without warning.

I have been practicing trail breaking for a while. I was taught by someone who rides sport touring bikes. Same rules apply to cruisers

We have some really twisty roads here in Scotland. Unfortunately, they are full of holes. And the hole's are full of water.

Harley Davidsons are antiquated, my Indian Pursuit is state of the art in touring motorcycles, or maybe the Honda Goldwing is a little closer to the cutting-edge, but that doesn't matter. The Harley Davidson is still a nice bike, and I know guys that tour on mid '90s Honda Shadows. Ride what you like, have fun and be safe, that's what matters.

Riding safely is not about riding slowly. It is about riding within your limits and the bikes limits, on my Ultra Limited this is a lot slower than the 1290 KTM I owned previously. The enjoyment on the Harley is about riding it well at progressive speeds while ensuring that I have a fair safety margin. On a lot of windy roads this also keeps me close to the speed limit and certainly at a speed that other road users can relate to. The KTM was stupidly fast and found I was often riding at license losing speeds, or you won't bounce speeds. Most of the people I currently ride with are on a range of sport bikes, naked bikes or adventure tourers, I have little problems keeping up with most of them, or on a given piece of road I am only a few minutes behind. On a ride I don't need to stop for comfort breaks anywhere near as often as others, so time over longer distance on the Harley is normally shorter.
