You gave some really good advice. One thing the kiddos look forward to is extra recess on nice days. I tell them they have to earn it though. They must get their work done, no talking when working on certain assignments and no unacceptable behaviors. This works for most, but there have been a few times when they didn't earn it. Some teachers write the word recess on the board and erase 1 letter each time they are misbehaving. If all letters are erased, no extra recess.

some students are challenging and that can be connected to lots of things. 1 huge tip that I've learned is do NOT call young people BAD. Honestly, its a cop out for what you may actually be communicating or you're choosing not to actually find out why the young person is behaving the way that they are. Also, sometimes it is just us and whatever preconceived beliefs we may have towards the students.... Just saying

If a student has special medical needs that require them to eat in class, should you let them?
@AshleyBarron5 жыл бұрын
Great question! The teacher will usually let me know if a student has special needs and if they do they usually let me know what to do/where to send them. If the student needs to eat for medical needs I would send them to the nurse so they can either have their snack/medicine. This is actually pretty common and has happened to me. Usually the teachers are pretty good at letting me know what to do!(:

You mentioned asking for referrals. What do you mean by referrals?
@AshleyBarron6 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda! Usually the teacher that you substitute for will have referrals. You use them when a student is acting up in class! They are very useful and I highly recommend substitutes use them! Basically if a student gives you trouble you give them a verbal warning and if they continue to act up/misbehave then you will write them up! Once you write them up you send them to the office with the referral so they can talk to the student. If the teacher doesn't leave you any referrals you can always ask for some at the front office. I always try to carry one and before they day begins I make sure to explain to the class that I have referrals and that I will write them up if I need to! Usually the students don't want to get written up so they'll behave, but there are those few students who will be disruptive so its best to have them!(:
@valerielewis78706 жыл бұрын
Good idea. I just send them to the office. Do you send the kid with the written referral?
@vanessabayardo97885 жыл бұрын
@@valerielewis7870 late reply but u can't just give referrals out as soon as they act up. You have to check a box first where it says previous action taken before referral, such as called parents, moved student to another desk, etc.

I have small question. Does the referral mean for example are these kids names from the teacher given who are not behaving good?
@AshleyBarron5 жыл бұрын
Hi Krishna! So sorry for the late reply, but referrals are a huge help when being a substitute teacher. When you send a child to the office with a referral it basically means that you have given this student many opportunities to behave but the student still doesn't listen. Of course, I try to give students many chances to behave before I write them up and send them to the office with a referral. Most of the time they start behaving once I mention referrals. This also helps the teacher know who was misbehaving!! I hope I answered your question! If you have any more questions please let me know! I'd be more than happy to help!(:

@AshleyBarron5 жыл бұрын
Mona Biehl I only take away recess when the students are misbehaving. It’s a way to discipline them. I will not reward bad behavior.
@AD-hh6dd5 жыл бұрын
I agree Mona. Taking away recess where they can get the wiggles out is just setting them up for failure. They need to get a break to reset. Without that, they'll misbehave more. I think Ashley here is talking about an extra recess though, not their regular recess. In that case, having to earn it only if they behave may be a good idea.
