This is what being a substitute teacher is really like: The students, the pay, the schedule, etc. I have been subbing for middle and high school in the Dallas Fort-Worth area in Texas for about 2 months now and have experienced a lot in the classroom.
I was a substitute teacher from April 2019- March 2020 (when schools closed because of the virus). I subbed for grades 5-12 for all subjects, general and special education.

Pretty much. I sub elementary because I don’t want to be bored all day. The day goes by so much quicker when in elementary, and frankly you don’t have anywhere near the same level of back talk and know-it-all kids. Give me 3rd and 4th grade any day of the week.

I started subbing recently, and so far I’ve subbed once at an elementary school and three times at middle schools. I’ve been surprised to find that I’ve really enjoyed the middle school kids. Yes, their behavior can be challenging, but I think they’re kind of the best of both worlds: young enough to still be cute and funny, but old enough to know how to behave (even though they don’t always choose to!). I’ve had a lot of interesting and funny conversations with them. My elementary class was cute but very out of control and overwhelming…and that was only a half-day!

I sub in my early career and was considering returning to it as I retired this year but am put off by my district now outsourcing to a national firm so I have to go through their on line app and training. They claim they will have benefits which the district didn't offer. If I have do all that I might as well go to a private school where I am not limited by TRS.

I am a 56-year-old substitute teacher. I really love kids and most kids are great. However, I only sub for middle schools and the wide range of maturity levels really factors into how effective you can be. The biggest problem I see is that kids don’t have the same respect for authority that students used to have. You need to establish that you are in charge or they will try to take charge! Overall, I enjoy subbing, but it is a challenging job.

I've subbed in southern California, as well as in the SF Bay Area for Middle and High School. I would say, 30% of the time it's a breeze, 30% of the time it's a hassle keeping students focused, on-track, and quiet enough so you can speak, and 30% it's a straight-up NIGHTMARE! WHEN you sub at "GHETTO SCHOOLS," you're met with issues you may not be prepared for, such as lack of manners, unpolished social behavior disrespect for rules, laws, & authority figures--and each other-- that really tests your patience. But overall, I dove right in; up for the challenge (AND they paid well, so that helped 🙂).

I had to have my bachelors degree, pay for and compete a state exam, that was 3-4 hours long, pay for fingerprinting, and pay for a state permit to substitute teach. I agree, talking to them is crucial, and not taking things too personally or seriously. I love connecting with the kids as a sub. I’ve been subbing at middle schools and finding that the “bad” kids often stop misbehaving after you just go over and have a pleasant conversation with them, asking them questions (about how school is going, what they’re doing this weekend, etc.) and showing genuine interest in their opinions and perspectives. Kids are hard-wired to seek attention from adults, and if you don’t give them positive attention they’ll settle for negative attention.

experienced sub here. i taught jersey city public schools for two years. Here's the skinnY: if anything that a child says or does to you is going to break you then you shouldn't do it. i learned real quick not to wear any valuable clothing (spat upon) and not to bring anything valuable that i would mind was stolen from me. usually a book (Sadly). if if was headphones, a trendy bag, or even a cool mechanical pencil from a stationary store the kids would steal it...just to be mean. no big deal just try to wear the nicest clothes you'd wear go scalloping i guess. my main complaint is that there was absolutely NO guidance or even training program for subs. very much an every man for himself climate. i attended a half-day seminar that was it. the students are all too unfortunately aware of the contemporary cultural climate against pretty much all discipline. if i called security i was usually laughed at by the person on the other end of the phone. if you have toxic abusive students (usually why the teacher needed a day off) Then there is literally nothing you can do. moreover unfortunately the administrators foster the narcissistic tendencies most students have. many high schoolers become drunk on their own power they know they have against you. it's seriously sad. the other teachers in my experience were completely useless and didn't care. also schools have preferred list of subs that they use. if you aren't on the list they don't care who you are and expect you to quit your first day. all this for 85 bucks a day back in 2014.

Hello, I'm thinking about applying for a substitute position. My biggest fear is having a hard lesson plan. I'm scared to have to actually teach a lesson or do a powerpoint slide over a subject that I know nothing about, especially if students have questions. Has this ever happened to you?
@byBriannaStone
@byBriannaStone 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Don’t be scared at all. Most of the time the plans are fairly easy and just “busy work” for students to do- study guides, worksheets and stuff. You’re just a sub so the teacher wouldn’t expect you to teach a full blown lesson. The most difficult thing I’ve probably had to do was read a play with students, assigns roles and make sure everyone is following along. Most plans are super easy!
@byBriannaStone
@byBriannaStone 4 жыл бұрын
And also, it’s okay to sub for subjects you know nothing about. Sometimes students ask me for help on assignments and I’m just honest with them if I don’t know how to help. They don’t expect you to know everything!

I wanted to be a math teacher but school officials, particularly the DOE, discouraged me from chasing my dream. I also recall CUNY guidance counselors discouraging me from pursuing my academic objectives. This was all done in an effort to keep certain minorities from reaching success and job security. So, I did others things with my life. Now at 59 years old with three college degrees, I find myself working as a security guard making peanuts for a living in a dead-end job. How about that for a story? Note: I also worked as a sub teacher in NYC for 8 years (2000-2008).

How did you diffuse the situations whenever you have a student act up, like the student that yelled at you??
@byBriannaStone
@byBriannaStone 4 жыл бұрын
So when that happened it was only my second day as a sub and I don't think I handled it as best as I could have. I was super flustered and I raised my voice back and then kind of just let it go and didn't talk to the student for the rest of class. What i SHOULD have done or would do now that I have more experience is take the student outside in the hallway or to the side and talk about why that behavior is not acceptable and try to understand why the student is so upset that he yelled at me. Whenever you yell back at the student, it escalates the situation and makes things worse. Talking in a calm, but firm voice and talking to the student individually rather than calling them out in front of the entire class is much better. It also promotes positive dialogue. If a student yells at you and all you do is yell back you're showing the students that its okay to do that. By remaining calm and pulling the student outside to talk, you're showing students how to talk through problems rather than just lashing out.
@byBriannaStone
@byBriannaStone 4 жыл бұрын
The main thing is, whenever a student escalates, do NOT go up to their level. That will only make things worse. The only time now that I actually yell or really raise my voice is when the entire class is being too loud and I need to tell them to quiet down or get back on task. I never yell directly at a specific student.

Dont go into Biology or Math probably both of the hardest degrees out there then only get compensated 52k a year (cali) it takes 14 years to max out at 99k... Choose something you enjoy but is easy.. maybe history, sociology, liberal studies, kinesiology,.... DO NOT MAJOR IN A HARD MAJOR TO BE A TEACHER!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! I was a substitute teacher in elementary grades (Pre-K - 5) for 2 years and then became a full time teacher in grades K - 2. I think you did a good job on this video explaining what it’s like to be a sub and giving suggestions, ideas, and do’s and don’ts. I believe that this video would be helpful for people who are considering being a sub but need more information before deciding or for someone who is just starting out as a sub. I wish you the best in your substitute teacher position and in your full time teacher position if you do follow through with that. Being a sub first does help.

I cannot believe you get paid so little. In NSW Australia we get paid what a fulltime teacher gets divided by the possible school days you can work (APPROX 200). They have just put it up to attract people. I earn more in one day than you do in a week. Subbing in the USA always was like a bit of pocket money for stay-at home moms. No one here would bother with subbing for $100 per day.
