Tips for Using Retinol | Dr Davin Lim

What is the science behind retinol?
Retinol belongs to the powerful family of molecules known as retinoids. These are vitamin A derivatives with multiple functions in the skin including reduction of pigmentation, improved cellular turnover, stimulation of collagen synthesis, & reduction of oil production.
What are the benefits of retinol?
Improved skin texture & quality. Retinol has antioxidant, anti-acne, anti-inflammatory, as well as antibacterial properties, hence its use in acne prone skin.
Anti-aging. Retinol decreases pigmentation but increases collagen production. This results in clearer skin texture with less wrinkles & smaller pores.
How & when to start?
Any age is a good time to start retinol, with the caveat that it should not be used in pregnancy. Most dermatologists advise starting at a lower concentration, namely between 0.3% to 0.5%. It is important to see how your skin reacts before moving to higher concentrations.
Here’s how to incorporate retinol into your skin care regime. The best time to use retinol is in the evening as this molecule is sun sensitive. Start every second night for the first fortnight, & increase as tolerated.

He didn't answer, but generally I don't think many people would use a Retinol in the morning, because it makes more sense to do it before you go to sleep, in-part to give it more time before your face is exposed to sunlight. Using an SPF during the day is important if you start applying a retinol, whenever you put the actual retinol on your face. But just to go back to your questioj, in this video he is saying to use the serum on dry skin at nightime, then put-on a moisturiser or night cream after it has time to sink in to your skin.

Hi Dr Lim, how long is retinol active on the skin? I have a 4 month baby and was wondering if I should keep her from my face even hours after applying it? I apply it at bedtime and usually don’t come in contact with her until about 5-8 hrs later. Should I wash my face before touching her? Thanks for your help.

It took a good 6 months to see results with prescription Retin A for me. In 6 weeks you may see results if you have acne issues.

@@evka24 over the counter cosmetics do not contain tretinoin (retinoic acid). It is a prescription drug and thus subject to regulations.

If you're on a budget Keihls is expensive, but their products are very nice- honestly I wish I could afford their eye cream and facial milk wash. If you are younger under 40 you could try Clinique sometimes they have specials they may be high end too. If you are 24 and younger you really don't need retinol just be sure to drink water, don't smoke, drink, drug or eat fast food all the time just as a treat because it's really more about what you put in your body and genes. Cerve at the drug store is good, I recommend the CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum, it is 16 dollars use sparingly. It is a gentle line, they also have bar soap that I use on my face, due to a skin issue I stay away from Retinol as it burns me, but I use the Aveeno Calming products for my skin care needs. I hope that gives you some ideas. Cerve also has a sunblock. I swear by their bilberry diabetic lotion too, as it's the only all over body lotion I can use to calm my skin issue.

Hi, Okay I see you are expert on skincare. So my first question is: how old are you? My guess is that you are 42 years old. So if you are 60 years old, then I could listen to what you have to tell about skincare. If you are about the age that I guess on, it means your expensive creams does not work so well. I want to see evidence!
