This is simply and directly presented yet very powerful. The discussions around journalistic ethics are important. Hopefully the journalists asking those questions are aware that they themselves need to ask themselves the same questions and are making the same tradeoffs as Johnny Harris even though they’re in a different mode of journalism than he is. And hopefully they will have the same standards of accuracy and integrity that they are holding him to.

- They change the normal model to a new one in which they hire curious people and let them know their job, the facilitator/ editor helps them to surround with what they are not good at -> new creators can wear many hats - Aesthetic matters even in the news. It hooks people in and watches for a long time because it's compelling and fun to watch - The process: Sign up form to ask people what they should cover -> research already and have enough information instead of reading through the internet - Formula : visual anchor and bridge

Re: the topic of researching Chinese encroachment on Hong Kong: I wonder if your sources ever revealed to you the number of businesses here in Hong Kong that jumped on the tourist bandwagon and sought to encourage mainland Chinese tourism to Hong Kong, for the sake of Hong Kongers' own quick monetary gain. And the number of locals here who have not hesitated to sell their own real estate to Chinese mainlanders looking to live in Hong Kong, simply because those foreign investors were cash rich. So these people who are lamenting the encroachment of mainland China in HK essentially sold out their own city, and stood to profit from it. I hope that gives context to your sources and your fact-finding.

Despite McDonald's being the world's largest chain of hamburger restaurants, it still could not afford the rents in Causeway Bay's Russell Street, and has been forced to move out. Operated by McDonald's Corp, the restaurant opened on the first floor of 8 Russell Street in 2006." Story in SCMP from 2013

I have a tip for journalists (interviewers). Just shut up and listen. Too many journalists nowadays feel the need to talk the entire time. While in reality people are interested in the person who is being interviewed, not the interviewer. Unless you do it in a "narrator" style kinda like Johnny Harris.

@jasonkrick16145 ай бұрын
@@LazarusAugment Congrats on starting investigative journalism. Like entering into anything new. There is a very steep learning curve that pays zero. In fact, you usually indirectly spend money and still not get paid. Example. I just started my profession. I had two world class mentors. Both were very far apart. On my days off, I would drive over to each of them. Sit there quietly and learn by however or whatever was for the day. The didn’t teach abc 123. I watched how they dealing with things and the solutions they came up with. I didn’t pay them. But also, they didn’t pay me. That’s a real mentor. Don’t spend a cent on them. If you’re really really good. And someone who is exceptional sees your potential. They ‘may’ take you under their wing. These videos. Are garbage in my opinion. They are nothing but a biased one sided opinion peppered with a little bit of truth. They are ‘entertaining’ though. Learn from them about what you like and what you don’t. And mold yourself into that. Good luck.

Johnny Harris' work is good but has too much pre-positions: China=bad; capitalism=bad; poor=victim; people=good, government=bad... His videos are too predictable.
@rudrapratapsinha88803 жыл бұрын
Yes
@TheThinkersBible Жыл бұрын
Well unfortunately quite often those things actually are true. Johnny tends to focus on the stories you don’t hear on mainstream news, stories that the protagonists in those scenarios find uncomfortable. There are always stories about how nice China is as a market of 1 billion people and how capitalism is all about individual merit - the other sides of the story are the areas that genuinely need correction and without this kind of reporting the abuses that happen never get corrected. All the corrections to those abuses and other problems happen because they’re reported on in a way that makes it clear they’re important issues to address.
