Definitely the Angkor Wat sunrise was worth getting up early for, especially arriving a bit before 5 am and at the west entrance of the outer compound wall, you could hear the distant chanting of monks mixed with the chirp of crickets with the sky still black and filled with stars. After sunrise from the northwest reflecting pond, it was nice continuing on to view the eastern face of the Wat bathed in the warm light of the early morning sun, with almost nobody else around. It was also nice to immediately continue north to Banteay Srei Temple, which at that time had hardly any other tourists, followed by the Kbal Spean Hindu-carved stream-beds, the Cambodian Landmine Museum, and firing automatic weapons at the Cambodian Army Fourth Troops Training Center’s public shooting range. I would love to see more of Cambodia someday.

@@Manifesting_Secret_Sketchbook That trip was back in March of 2009. I really enjoyed my time in Siem Reap, which back then was still a bit ‘rough around the edges’ with some sign of poverty visible and begging/street solicitations encountered, occasional landmine victims without prosthetics seen on the streets, and a small makeshift shantytown along the Siem Reap River near its bend near the junction of Sivatha Blvd & Pokambor (Psar Chaa Old Market area). It appears from vlogger posts, photos & such that part of the city has really been upgraded since then (roadwork on Sivatha near Pub Street had already while I was there, and I later read an online article from the Phnom Penh Post that they were working to remove the ‘red light element’ from that area and make it more family friendly), with a couple of pedestrian bridges added across the river near Psar Chaa. I was recently in northern Laos (November/December 2023) and really enjoying it, particularly because the vibe around Luang Prabang is similar to that of Siem Reap circa 2009, though much more quaint and scenic given the picturesque lush hills surrounding the Mekong River. Regarding living in Cambodia, I believe the country has become a popular location for ‘digital nomad’ expats, particularly in Phnom Penh where the city has become quite developed with more modern conveniences.
