I've been to the Great Pyramids, Machu Pichu, the Parthenon, the Coliseum, and no other area can come close to how amazing the Angkor complex is. The sheer variety is overwhelming in a good way. I used every hour of my 3 day pass, they even let me in for an extra sunset, I saw 3 sunrises in a row. It was the best!!! I think I convinced my 80 year old parents to join a tour and see them this year! The wonderful locals make the experience better as well.Happy Travels

The first time I went to Cambodia I spent 2 weeks in the Siem Reap area alone and even with the guide, I felt like I was drinking in information like drinking from a firehose. So much rich culture to witness. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

My wife and I will be on a trip to SE Asia this May, and we'll visit Siem Reap and Angkor, of course. Your videos really have given us so much insight. Actually, I've just get in touch to Lao, your guide, and just made arrangements for him to guide us as well on a two days tour visiting these amazing temples. Thanks for your videos, for your input, and for encourage us to travel to these amazing places. Greetings from Mexico.

Angkor is a pretty impressive location and one that is on my list of places to see. Angkor Wat is a world famous site and your video did not disappoint. I was about to make a Laura Croft joke and you immediately showed the temple that was used as a set in the movie. Your advice about the overall size of the complex, time needed to see and explore the area even somewhat superficially is needed information. Enjoyed that as usual you highlighted both the basic tourist tour and then provided more.

Ancient ruins are captivating….. Angkor Wat must have been a truly spectacular city back in the day. Its comparable to the medieval cathedrals. The amount of craftsmanship, skill and time it took to build it made one of the Wonders of the World. I agree the site is a bucket list destination for sure. My favorite site though is the submerged church steeple in the Reschensee in the South Tyrol in Italy. Its like a fairy tale when seen against the backdrop of the Alps. Anyway, I’m glad the prohibition on live photography wasn’t enforced and that’s exactly why Angkor Wat has rightly graced the Cambodian flag!

I never get tired of going to Angkorwat Siem Reap although I’ve been there 5 times already. There are lots to learn,observe and absorb the rich history of these ancient temples. Words don’t do it justice, you have to be there in person to feel the magic, tranquility, serenity and peacefulness that Angkor wat has to offer. Love,love it. Thanks for sharing your amazing experiences with us.

I’ve been there many times and still discovered new things every time I was there. It was massive. People might think Angkor Wat is just one temple, but there are many temples. One day visit is not enough. If you learn the history of “Khmer Empire” you’ll see there was no Thailand. It used to be Khmer territory. If you’ve been to Thailand before you saw the culture, the building are similar to Khmer. I’ve learned that even Mauy Thai “Thai martial art” is derived from Khmer Bokator “Khmer martial art”.

@happy4ever305

@@kkkha-33334 My friend. Please learn the world history. Google “khmer empire”. There was no Thailand. Most thais were from China region called TAI closed to Tai..wan (Taiwan) island and the rest were native khmers. TAI people settled in khmer territory during khmer empire called SIAM and in 1939, it changed to (Tai-land) Thailand because majority of people are TAI. Khmer has Bokator long before Mauy Thai. Angkor wat walls were carved with Bokator or Kun Khmer martial arts. Bokator was used to fight Siamese invasion. Siamese invaded siem reap between years 1591 and 1594. Khmers launched attack and retake Angkor wat. That is why the town named Siem Reap meaning Siamese defeated. Siem=Siamese Reap=defeated. Sometime people refer khmer as Thai’s older brother because Cambodia is a lot older than Thailand. If you learn deeper into the history between Cambodia and Thailand you will realize that Thai and Khmer have the same culture. Remember Cambodia is the oldest country in Southeast Asia.

Thank heavens I managed to visit the temple when all cameras were allowed. I stayed ten days the first time but I felt I had to come back to do justice to this great monumental achievement of the Khmer people. I stayed two weeks the second time and am so happy that I did that. The Indians and the Japanese were hard at work trying to restore the damaged parts and they have done a great job! Just returned from second visit to Laos an hour back. Another great South East Asian destination. Have you been there yet?

Angkor Wat drew me to Cambodia many years ago - I never grow tied of exploring this Temple - however beyond the wonders of Angkor Wat (which holds centre place on the Cambodian flag and in the hearts of Cambodians) & Angkor Archielogicial Park and all the majesty it holds is a multitude of great Ancient Temple sites - many of which offer you that "Indiana Jones" experience - I am back living in Cambodia after being stuck in Australia during the Pandemic. I am overjoyed to once again have the opportunity to explore these Temples - some may say it's my obsession and I love sharing photographs of my own adventures.

Hi Alina, a great video diary of Angkor Wat and the other temples which are no less impressive in their own right, in particular Bayan and Ta Prohm. I visited with family in the last few weeks and we were all blown away by the scale of the complex and the human endevour undertaken. Two things for travellers to Angkor: one is the one day / three day pass which has to be secured before you go into any part of the complex. and two, watch out for the groups of musicians around the temples, all of whom are victimes of land mines. Spare a few reals / dolllars for these people who are a sad reminder of Cambodia's recent history.

I was there in early 2016 and tripods where no problem, with the exception of a temple with really narrow space. Best regards, Ralf

To be fair, it looked like they barely checked people going in and I didn't see them taking gear away from people while there. So I don't know, a bit useless to then even have the rules in the first place.

As mentioned, I was there in 2016. The rules might be tightened today. My experience was, in Ta Prohm my dad was asked not to use his external microphone. And I was asked in a small temple not to use the tripod. No gear was taken away. But I also would be hesitant to publish footage which was taken obviously breaking the rules in order to avoid trouble with lawyers.

Great VDO. I am a Cambodian historian, i hate to break the tour guide's heart, the faces on the Bayon Temple are neither King Jayavaraman VII, nor the faces of Buddha. I watched tons of KZbin VDOs from the Angkor site. Different tour guides flip flopping between Buddha's faces and King J VII. Khmer Empire was dominated with Hinduism from the early 7th century, but Buddhism was the minority. Most king during their dynasty were Hindus and built the greatest temples and mostly dedicated to the three major deities, Lord Shiva, Brahma and Visnhu. Example, Preas Vihear Temple (Lord Shiva), Ta Prhom (Brahma) means old Bramah, Angkor Wat (Lord Visnhu), most temples dedicated for Lord Shiva. The existence of the Khmer Empire was the great believe of the "God Kings", Khmer people believe each king was their God in Hinduism. With this firm belief that made possible to build the Angkor Empire. The major reason for the Khmer Empire downfall was the religious revolutionary from Hinduism to Buddhism by King J VII, the battle between these two religions were the destruction of this great empire. You can find the evidences on each temple that was built for Hindu, but King J VII converted to Buddhism by placing Buddha statues in those temples. King J VII successors mostly continued to follow Buddhism, but Hinduism became the minority. So, Bayon Temple is dedicated for Brahma, experts and historian agreed. However, Cambodian were taught by the French when colonized Cambodia for almost 100 years.

There is new theory that the Khmer empire "Knom system" which is kind of similar to modern day capitalism failed. The Knom system was base on voluntary life labor for the aristocrats of Angkor in return of social benefits. The Knom system was the back bone of the Khmer empire economy and this is what made the state centralize. Once it collapse, the society gradually shift to a new culture one that is Theravada Buddhism a more tolerant religion which expels the Knom slavery culture. Before, many Angkor kings adopted a mixture of Hinduism and Buddhism but never abandoned the Knom system. Once, this happens major projects were u finished and people wanted change. The Theravada religion to Cambodia probably spread from the people of Ayutthaya that time they were a Khmer speaking people as evidence of Khmer institutions and inscriptions found in Ayutthaya kingdom. Long story short, was the decline of Angkor just a cultural and social shift towards a new tolerant and moderate system oppose to the harsh Knom system?

A tremendous accomplishment considering a huge number of elephants were used to transport all these stones nearly 60 miles from a mountain ! A mind bending endeavor that is simply hard to comprehend given all the different locations too ?!?!?
