Early October is FABULOUS in DC. There are still plenty of mild, pleasant days and it is a great time to see the zoo, museums and monuments without the vast crowds of the spring and summer. Check the weather and be sure to have a rain jacket. It can get chilly but it is almost always really beautiful with the fall foliage.

You missed a major event on October 16th. The mighty Maple Leafs are in town. I am Visiting from Niagara Falls, Ontario with my son to take in this game. You are quite correct with regards to the hotel prices.... insane. Can you suggest any wild camping sites. !! Thanks for your0 info. Very useful for first time visitors.

I stayed at an Air Bn B for less then $70.00 a night. It was a 10 minute walk to the metro, a half hour metro trip. It was great! Look into it!

@@TripHacksDC Perhaps I'm cowardly, but I would never suggest wild camping in this area...not in painless walking distance of any metro and definitely not inside the Beltway. Too much unwelcome "company" and stranger-on-stranger crime. Have you checked out hostels? There are a number of hostels in the area. That would be your best bet. I can't wish you good luck with the game (LOL!) but I certainly do with getting an inexpensive place to stay and having a lovely time in the metro area. If you haven't been here, there are masses of things to see and do, much of it of little cost.

Both of my trips to DC were in October and I really enjoyed the season there. During the 2nd trip in Oct 2013 it was overcast and drizzly part of the time. I enjoy that weather so it was fine.

In addition to Rock Creek Park, you also get great colors on the GW Parkway , south of Alexandria all the way to Mt. Vernon.

Noooo! Not a secondary field trip period in October!!!! I was there in May and the massive crowds of kids / buses were pretty awful. I thought by returning in October, I could avoid this. :(

Places have "kid days." Why not "adult" days. I use a cane or walker most of the time in museums, and have been tripped &/or run over countless times by screaming children running amok, even bible school and scout youth groups. Seems only fair.

Beer gardens are most likely to have Oktoberfest events. They're likely just to be one or two Saturdays rather than a continuous thing.
