Good video Jason. I hear ya about a deer off in the distance and what could have been and what not. This week, is short week and what not with Thanksgiving. I hope to get out and run/gun with bow and catch the tail end of the rut. What time is ok to get into the woods for setting up in a somewhat new spot with a Lone Wolf Assault 2 hang on and climbing sticks? I ask because most hunters say get to your spot 1 hour before shooting hours. But that would mean scouting in the dark and setting up well before 1 hour before commencement of shooting hours.

Great question! I do alot of these types of hunts. Go in blind to an area I have never been before day light. Once I'm in the area i want to be I wait for grey light and then quickly pick a tree based on sign and shooting options. Then get up and set up. I do not and never did see an advantage to being in stand an hour before dark. Especially in the cold. Any deer that pass you before light risk busting you, your ground scent below your stand is accumulating every minute from skin cells stacking up at base of the tree. And you are going to mist likely not stay on stand as long due to cold or boredom, so you are reading an hour of non productive time and giving up what is most likely and awesome hour at the end of the sit.

Is there a preferred height for tree stand? I usually only get about 16 to 18 feet... should i be trying to get even higher?

I dont go any higher that 18 and prefer to be between 14 and 16. The higher you get the bigger the risk for 1 lung hits due to steep angles. Many will argue the advantages of being higher for wind carrying scent away, etc. But my opinion is only go as high as you need to for good cover so that you get the best shot angles for best animal recovery. So there is no right or wrong answer. But for me I dont go any higher that I need to to get the cover.

Background cover I find is more crucial than height. I used to get anal about getting high in a tree but I have been 25 feet up and skylined by deer and then I have been six feet off the ground and never seen by deer. I just go with the terrain. Awesome videos Jason keep them coming !

Being higher in the tree for wind to carry scent away is a myth that I used to believe until a researcher demonstrated it to be false. I used to go high but as you said the angle of double lung pass through becomes very acute making shot placement much, much more critical & difficult.
