Carl, great video. This was the first video of yours that I've watched and your tips on the foam and especially the flow formula for the spillway instantly made me subscribe. I'm slowly planning a pondless waterfall for my front yard and I've been pouring over Hundreds of videos to see how it's done. I've been watching Greg's channel, team aquascape's channel (also Greg's) and Atlantis water gardens'. This one video of yours just gave me that extra push on how to tackle my design challenges. Thanks

@@ColumbiaWaterGardens I wish I was in California! And thank you very much for the offer. It's amazing how anyone tied to Aquascape seems so open to sharing their knowledge. Actually I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada. I have looked on the Canadian Aquascape website to find the closest CAC to me but that section of their website seems to have a bug. I will eventually send an email to them. And yes I'm looking forward to your upcoming videos on that build. That's a huge blank canvas you've been given. No, but I should. It's information readily available. Rule of thumb is to run 2" pipe unless you have flow that exceeds 7000 gph. After that, run 2". Most head pressure is at about 5' nominal, but kike I said, do your research, and I'll still shoot a video.

Thanks for the video! Just one (probably stupid) question... On your two spillways, why do the BACKS of the two spillway rocks need to be level to each other? It seems like having the fronts be level to each other should be sufficient to make the water flow work well (assuming that both rocks have the backs lower than the fronts - basically leveling the highest points of both spillways to each other.) What am I missing? Thanks so much.
@ColumbiaWaterGardens
@ColumbiaWaterGardens 9 ай бұрын
I like to level the backs because the fronts may not necessarily be level to each other. When the fronts are equally level, it looks artificial to me. But you are right in concept. It's a matter of preference
@TylerTervooren
@TylerTervooren 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Carl. What's your take on an acceptable amount of leakage through your falls (water going under your waterfall instead of over it)? I thought I was pretty meticulous foaming mine, but when I tested it, it seemed quite a bit of water was still getting behind the rocks instead of going over them. I know the foam isn't waterproof and you can't get 100%, but I don't have a feel for whether I need to redo it or if it''s as good as it's going to get and more effort isn't worth it.
@ColumbiaWaterGardens
@ColumbiaWaterGardens 2 жыл бұрын
Keep foaming upstream until you find the source of the leak. It's awesome patience, but good foaming is when you control the water where you want it to go.

So you don't add gravel and/or sand to wet foam so it sets and camo's the foam? When do you add the gravel to the foam after you apply it?
@ColumbiaWaterGardens
@ColumbiaWaterGardens 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the situation for me. I do add when it's wet on a second coat, but on a situation like you see in this video i like to get a good seal first. I add gravel after it sets a minute and completes expanding.

U are absolutely right, you must let it expand and set then trim it back, throwing gravel on too early will give you pain, the foam will expand past the gravel and you will have to cut it back anyway, listen to this man, he knows what he’s talking about, thanks for the important tip!
@ColumbiaWaterGardens

@@jgardens6321 I hate coming off like a know it all as I like to stay in the learning curve in all things. But after thousands of water features built and maintained, we have developed our methods when it comes to foam. Too early, big mess. Too late, no adhesion. There is a sweet spot that only experience teaches.

Columbia Water Gardens ok, Thank you for your reply. Aquascape products aren’t available here in Germany where I live, So i will have to use the basic yellow foam, but I’m not sure if it’s water proof. I’m not gonna be putting fish in so I don’t really care if it’s toxic or not. Did you have any experience with yellow foam being used for water features or did you ever try it?

What can I use to prevent algae in a pondless waterfall??
@ColumbiaWaterGardens
@ColumbiaWaterGardens 4 жыл бұрын
We sell an automatic dosing system for pondless waterfalls that works like a champ. It is the Aquascape Automatic Dosing System for Fountains. If you would like to order one, please call me at 888-713-7771 x 4. The problem with Chlorine is that it stains when overdosed. Cycling the pondless waterfall off for a few hours every day also works like a champ without chemicals. The heat of the day bakes the film and algae off, but it dries out roots of plants if you have a planted pondless. My recommendation..... Buy and install the automatic dosing system for fountains, and if that isn't enough, buy and install an Aquascape IonGen. Again, I sell both of these, I price match Amazon, and would really like to have your business and to chat with you before you make your purchase to ensure you are not spending money needlessly. Happy Ponding ;) -Carl

@ColumbiaWaterGardens
@ColumbiaWaterGardens Жыл бұрын
Sure. My experience has taught me that expanding waterfall foam is more effective as it expands into the deeper and harder to reach areas and acts as a glue and really helps lock things in place. People have used cement for years, and that doesn't make it wrong. The latest technology is foam, making the installation quicker, thus lowering costs. Good luck! 😎👍
