We have learned so much the last couple of years since our son was born, nutrition wise, health wise, but we have also learned a lot about communication!
We are a trilingual family, and Vigo has been raised trilingual. I speak exclusively Spanish to him, mom speaks only Polish and she and I speak English in the household (plus we live in the UK which is an English speaking country). We discover new things everyday, about his development, his speech, his listening and comprehension.
We have created a list of tips that we wanted to share with you in case you find yourself in a similar situation, with a little one that will share languages between parents and the language being spoken in school by his friends. Of course this video is not created exclusively for people with children, if you don't have any yet, or simply are interested in the topic, hopefully we provided some information you found valuable!
Thank you and of course, Subscribe to our channel if you haven't and share this video with someone you think might benefit from it.
Hugs!

My son is trilingual and now at 15 he speaks Polish, Hungarian and English. We always have trilingual discussions at the dinner table, I speak Polish with him, he speaks Hungarian with his mom and when I speak with my wife in English he joins in English. Funny thing is how he learnt English without us teaching him even once. He just listened to our conversations for 9 years and one day when he was 9 he suddenly started to speak fluently English. He has some accent, but his vocabulary in English is on par with his two native languages. Kids are amazing how easily they pick a language without even teaching them, just by listening.

@@VigosDad Yes, he did. We never taught him anything. One day he simply joined our conversation in English and started speaking fluently. It was a big shock to us too. This is when he made his first YT video (an intro to his channel) in English and he basically became fluent from day to day. He proceeded to record his first video of the Minecraft game where he spoke fluently for 20 mins or so. I remember standing there watching this in disbelief as he explained everything in English. Before that he never spoke a single word in English, so yeah, it came suddenly and he basically learnt from us and later YT. Now, he watches everything in English on YT. When we go to the cinema he listens to dialogs in English. Sometimes if he does not know a fancy word in Polish or Hungarian (like when we discuss world affairs or economics), he usually knows it in English and I also sometimes tell him words in English first in hopes he knows it before I explain them in Polish. It is quite amazing how well he taught himself English without us even trying. Your child lives in UK, so he will speak English native as well as Polish and Spanish, but you have to put attention to sending him to Polish and Spanish kindergarten (like we did), so he can speak his parents' languages every week with others.

👋 mixing languages becomes a convenience (laziness) specially at home where everyone speaks in your case...3 languages. With my polish/English parents and with my English/French friends we often throw English into our conversations to reduce the number of syllables to roll off the tongue. When your around someone knowing they will understand you if you substitute certain annoying words to pronounce with another from a common language it became a habit for me. Now if I'm talking to someone unsure if they speak similar common languages than I make the effort not to substitute. My very common example is always " ma-mo ide na po-dwor-ok " it's easier to jump out with mom ide na yard. Less syllables to bother with. Vigo will deffinetly appreciate his fluency in 3 languages, specially into adulthood because everyone will agree there is something about a Latin language, or let's just confirm the language of Luv. Hehe. Pair that with having some Latin dance moves and well, he won't be single for long. Sorry for adding that just my way of smirking.

I am Canadian living in Warsaw. I have 20 and 15 year old daughters. From the beginning- even when we lived in Canada, my husband spoke Polish my daughter and I spoke English. Now they are completely bilingual as well as the addition of Spanish and French. In our experience- there was no problems. It isn't a race. My youngest did take longer to read in Polish- but there was nothing to be worried about. We kind of have our own family language now that is a mix of Polish and English- I also think the slang/idioms is what makes a person fluent. Even though my Polish is really good- I don't have the knowledge of slang but my kids have the slang/idiom knowledge in both languages.

I also wanted to add that for a few years the Polish teachers were insisting my daughter was dyslexic because she was learning to read Polish slower than the other kids. She wasn't at all but there is a gap in the teaching methods for multilingual children.

This is my house. My kids are older so they’ve defaulted to English as your wife explained pero I speak to them in Spanish and my wife speaks to them in Polish. It became more difficult once they started school because they just wanted to speak in English like their friends. What we do here that may land close to what your wife explained when she mentioned language & location. We do language days & that helps us. So we have Spanish Saturdays and Polska Sundays. This has helped us all, including me, be more consistent with our learning to speak and hear more Polish. The wife and kids have taken to Spanish a lot easier than the kids and I have taken to Polish! Me tienes que decir como lo hiciste! ✌🏽

I think that at some point tv can help a lot. it was a case of my kids, I noticed that at the age of 11 and 7, they could speak Polish, but they didn't learn more vocabulary, just they were useing what they've learnt so far. I decided to get Polish tv (we live in Italy) and after that I've noticed that they've learnt a lot. This year they spent 20 days at summer camps in Poland it's helped a lot to become more fluent and not to repeat all the time" how to say it?" During the school year they do one-hour lesson on Saturday online with a teacher and she said that in one year the oldar son can pass Polish Exam b2 :)

What a great way of learning, I will have to try that when visiting Poland. My friends son for example was born in England but lives in Poland. So I will speak Polish and learn more. My colleagues here in England speak English but help me with some phrases in Polish. My local town prefers a more ancient version of English (Yorkshire dialect) and it can be confusing for all when translating in any language so I only use clear English.

Very good advises. I feel very near what you are saying. I met my wife (polish) in English, she learnt Spanish very fast (six months), I learnt Polish (more than 10 years) and we use the "one parent-one language" system. We strongly belieave this is the best way. Our children speak like natives both languages and they feel integrated in both countries. At the table they only need to turn the head to speak to my wife or to me to change they language they are using. It is amazing. From outside our conversations could look crazy, but we feel them very natural.

Our daughter speaks 3 languages too. We never did one parent one language although my husband spoke mostly in turkish. I would speak half the time in polish but also repeat some of the sentences in turkish and English. She never had any issues with mixing all 3 languages. She would speak in English with the neighbors, turkish with her dad and polish with my family. She also spoke polish on purpose around her dad when saying things she didn’t want him to understand 😂. She was fluent in all 3 languages (by fluent i mean she could bild 3-4 words sentences) by the age of 20 months

My partner is Polish but grew up the latter half of his life in the Netherlands. I am Latin-American and we met in NL so I wonder about how our children will identify since we speak English or Dutch (im learning Dutch atm) to his family and him Polish when I'm not around. I speak Spanish and English to my family in USA. I wonder if learning Polish will result in our kid being bullied. His father identifies more as Dutch despite his PL passport. And he also wonders if he should apply to become Dutch. WE both did not spend our childhood here so we have no idea what it is like for mixed kids born in NL . If we should put them in international or Dutch school. And do we abandon Spanish as the fourth language (Mom-english, dad-polish, school dutch) or I try to communicate it despite it being my 2nd language (learned from my parents so I'm C1ish) = (mom-spanish, dad-polish, mom&dad:english, school dutch)? Or put them in english international = mom-spanish, dad-dutch, grandma -polish).

I've seen different videos about this topic but I'm still confused by the meaning of 'consistency ' when all 3 of you are spending time together. Does consistency here mean that when it's the 3 of you, you still stick to Spanish and Polish or do you then speak English also with the kid? Surely English then and you don't switch to Polish or Spanish? Do I understand that correctly? Basically my situation is similar: My expecting wife is German and will speak German with the kid. Im Polish and will speak Polish. Together we speak English with each other and we thought that whenever it's the 3 of us, we only use English- would such an approach make sense? Would appreciate an answer, thanks!

You know what I did? EVERYTHING wrong. My son could have been taught 3 languages at home: German (wife), Polish (me), Italian (my wife’s dad). Now he speaks one. Because my wife can’t speak Polish and only little Italian. I tried first - then I was afraid SHE couldn’t understand the mixed language you mentioned in your video. Ok, now at school my son has French and English but that’s not the same. You are doing it right.

Mam trochę inne doświadczenie z kreskówkami. Są bardzo fajnym dodatkiem i moja córka wzbogaciła słownictwo na kreskówkach. Oczywiście na samych kreskówkach nie nauczą się języka.

🌺🌼🌸🌺 Good advices: One parent /one language . What when the mother can speak 4 languages and the father 2?! 😅

Hey Samira! Thank you. Well when we mean “one parent one language” is that the parent will speak in whichever language is the main one for the parent. So if you speak 4 languages for instance (congrats btw wow!) choose the one you are more natural in!

I work on a covered playground for kids and (I don't know what caused that BUT!) the kids that come there are often from mixed relationships. They usually come with one parent and there's often the situation when the parent is from abroad and he/she can't speak Polish and then the child translate for me what he's saying. Those kids are bilingual and I love it!

Once the guy came and started speaking German to me. I didn't understand anything and I asked him if he could speak English, but he didn't answer (I guess he didnt understand). His two little boys didn't tell me anything as well. Then I noticed they were speaking Arabic with their dad but German with each other, but also mixing it with some Polish words. That was funny

Our situation is: one has Greek language and the other has Arabic/French language (Arabic dominant). In the relationship we speak in English but we live in Germany 🙃 so what the kid will be talking?

We raise our son with four different languages. Unfortunately we went through a speach delay problem. Raising multilingual children consumes a lot of time and effort. Especially if you are the only source of language for your child.

So dad speaks to Vigo in Spanish and mom in Polish. This is clear for me. But how it is when there are all three of you in the same place ?? (I assume you do the same home and outside? ) Does dad speak to mom in Spanish too in Vigo's presence? And mom answers dad in Polish? Does Vigo distinguish between Polish and Spanish and English? What about family situations with grandparents? What languages are used and by whom? What are your principles? Do you try to avoid situations (in Vigo's presence) where there is a subgroup of a group of people that use å language that the others do not understand or you try to always be maximally inclusive towards all present at the meeting/gathering? Many questions, I know, but we are curious here with my girlfriend Kasia :)

OK so basically we really stick to one parent one language. Karolina and I speak English so we always speak in English but the moment we address him we switch to our respective mother tongue. Now, we live in England so at the nursery they speak English to him and we see his English speaking and understanding improve tremendously. I would say at this moment everything is pretty equal, with a slight disadvantage to Polish when it comes to Speaking because to be frank it’s very hard language to pronounce. His understanding of Polish though is right up there with Spanish and English. With family it’d basically the same, if the grandparents are Polish, they will speak polish to him, my parents will speak Spanish.

We talk to him all the time and include him on everything. A child’s brain is astoundingly absorbing and you cannot imagine how can they compartmentalize all this but they do. Vigo switches languages when speaking to us depending on who he speaking to.

Hi, i'm not married yet neither have kids😂 but i'm really interested in helping my future children become multilangual. I'm indonesian and i have egyptian bf who speaks arabic, we are planning to live in my bf's country after we get married InsyaAllah. I want my future children to speak indonesian, arabic and english. My bf and i speak english, i can't speak arabic so does my bf can't speak my native language which is Indonesian. What method do you think is work best for us?
@VigosDad
@VigosDad 2 жыл бұрын
What we do and it’s what we read it’s best, is to have each parent speak to the child in their native language exclusively. If you and your partner speak english between you the child will also pick up english (also maybe have them study in a bilingual school if you can). all the best!

My question is not related to topic of the video but to language itself. If i may ask Vigo's Dad - in what language do you swear ? :) (i do not believe there are people not swearing. Nobody will say "omg it hurts so much yada yada yada" if you hammer own finger (trying to nail the nail!) but ................ (muted).
