Tips on Starting a MTG Collection on a Budget

Good basic tips. I spend $30 a month in singles. I try to buy rather old or unusual cards that spark joy for me when I play Commander.

For a beginner I would recommend the pauper format. Look up a meta deck, try to pick one that is a mono color and buy it and play it. Then as you play other people you'll start to figure out what you like or what you want to try. I went to tcgplayer yesterday and could have a whole meta deck shipped to me, before taxes, for $40.58. I would say that should be with in someone's budget, and you could probably do pretty well against a standard, modern, or pioneer deck. edit: I could have a tier 1 meta deck for $40.58.

Best way is to get a good deal on purchasing a collection. Sell all the top cards to make all your money back, then all the leftovers is yours to keep and enjoy. I been doing this for years. I have loads of decks, sleeves, binders, playmats, storage boxes, all essentially for free.

I am tight as hell and I never like to buy anything. I play in a club that has quite relaxed rules and we can play any card from any set in magic from the start of magic's inception. I play mostly 60 card format. I have a local dealer that I occasionally buy from. I only get boosters if it is my birthday or Christmas and I like to buy and hunt down used cards under £1/$1. I do occasionally go on a splurge and buy a bunch of cards but for the most part I think I am ok despite it being really tempting. I liked this video as a fellow budget orientated cheap ass. I am starting to keep just random rares in a binder as I am not fussed about getting sets, my collection is based around the cards I have researched and wish to own and build strategies around. I also learn new cards most weeks at club and add them to my wish list. What are some good ways to store a collection? I just have a box from Temu that is magnetic and I store around 500 or so cards in it, mix of lands and commons and un commons that are penny sleeved into play sets to keep them together, no particular order just in colour dividers

possibly in the future will post more. I have several other YT channels and I put this on the back burner sadly :( I also havent been playing to much MTG but i miss it! And yes i had a habit of buying 100 cards that were cool but didnt have a good deck to use XD

i love discard, so when i buit my 8-rack modern deck i made it a hobby just to collect playsets to fill binnders discard cards and black cards to go in discard.

Nice, But a few comment from the view of a ´Beginner´ . Startet way back at unlimited/ 4.th edition, never got fully involved and abondened it. Time by time looking at MTG and buying a Booster and leave. Recently started with Magic : the Arena again. And hooked for now . The greatest problem a Beginner has and to follow your advice is knowledge. You just don´t know, what to expect for each color, don´t know the cards you should single handed buy, and so on. so what to do ? look for videos around to get an overview. Rigth , you should beginn with a deck, but how to get one. there are products out there, where you can get a playable deck at start, but the choice of color still remains and it´s a little expensiv. Buy what no one else is buying ! there is the concept of ´Bulk´ , cards that other collectors assemble over time and that have no value for them any longer. this bulk is very cheap, you don´t get good cards, but you will get a feeling, what each color is about, you can build decks to get the feeling of the play, Later you can start to follow the ´single cards buying strategie´, now you know more !
