I like the baseball analogy. I feel like I'm in the classic situation of a major league hitter that usually bats 350-400 and is in a seemingly never ending slump of under 200 or worse and maybe getting a small bait fish now and then.

Here in Southern Indiana, the bite will hold very strong until the first real freeze hits. Typically this happens first to middle of January. Then it's hard to buy a bite. An inevitable shad kill occurs which certainly doesn't help things.

Interesting question... since we talk about how moon phases affect the bite. With the upcoming eclipse coming how would that affect the bite? Has that ever been studied?

Dieter, when you and others say that catfish can tend to get down down in the mud on the bottom in the winter to get warmer, do they just lay on top of the mud or are they digging completely underneath of it out of view? I ask because I got a deal on an underwater camera that I'll toss in while my poles are also in. While I pull it across the bottom (unless I put in under a bobber) I have seen bass, and other smaller fish, and even crawfish, but I have yet to see a full view of any catfish in one of my local lakes that I caught catfish in this past summer. I saw the whiskers of one in a different lake further away but then it swam out of view. So once again, do they get completely out of view under the mud, or are the visible on top of the mud? I'm going mad trying to figure out why I'm not seeing or catching even a small one right now. Can't believe I havn't had atleast a few come into view. Thank You.

I honestly have no idea what exactly is going on. Its all theory......I just know when you see mud, the bite has usually been slow.

I have seen plenty of bass and other I guess you'd call pan fish, along with crawfish live on my screen buy have yet to see any whispered fish in full view, definitely no big cat sitings on screen yet. I did have either a bass or striped bass get curious about my camera, swim up to it and actually try to eat it yesterday. For a second all I saw was the inside of its mouth on screen. I'm tempted to try putting a hook on the camera some time if they're going to get that curious!!

Ever notice whether wind moving against current is a factor or not ? Im not far from the Detroit River. Local guides say that when wind heads upriver, its going to be a bad fishing day. I catfish on a different local river. Had some great outings last year. Then one day i couldnt get a bite, and yep, wind moving against the current.

No, not really, but we don't get to fish constant current on the reservoirs like you river guys do.

I don't know catfish behavior that well. But a l I need a little more information. What time of year? Were they spawning. Did a front blow through? Before spawning they hit bluegill by me. After the spawn they do not. Which way does the river run? An east wind could cause a different reaction in a river that flows east or west. I have seen days of south wind blow a couple feet of water into a bay. I didnt get a bite. I also really like a south wind on the Mississippi River. I don't necessarily want to be In the main channel but have had awesome days in the sloughs. Ducking out of the wind. Hope this helps
