Such an awesome informative video! You literally went over every single question that comes up with cloth diapering in the hospital, it's like an all-in-one guide lol I will say especially for first-time parents, don't get discouraged if your nurses make it seem like you're "not allowed" to use your cloth diapers. Depending on how much conflict you want to take on right after birth, feel free to argue with them but don't feel like you failed if you just comply and use disposables. With my first we didn't even want to use cloth, just more natural disposables and our nurse said we HAD to use the diapers provided because they had a line to show when they were wet and as first timers, we wouldn't be able to figure it out and the baby would be in their diapers too long. I know that it was BS and she was just being difficult because nurses don't even change the diapers at my hospital (parents do) so she shouldn't have a say. But after going through a 48-hour labor, I just didn't have the energy to fight with her. Just know that it's only a day or two in the hospital, you can still start cloth diapering when you get home and start enjoying the benefits then if a care provider is being difficult.

It's sad that some hospitals have staff that are so pushy with doing everything their way... even when you want to use your own disposables, how sad! We had a great experience last time and we will be doing cloth from birth this time as well. My husband is an assertive extrovert (I'm introverted lol) so he has no issue telling someone to F off 😂 It might not be the politest thing to say but he also takes zero BS from anyone. Plus he loves cloth! I'll vlog a bit in the hospital this time around and hopefully get a more in depth-hands on view of cloth diapering in the hospital. I'm going to be so sad when the newborn stage is over. Hopefully it doesn't go too fast. My third baby only wore newborns for a few weeks while my fourth wore them for months! Fingers crossed we get good use out of them lol

It's our hospitals policy to only use disposable diapers, it also says in their policy that you must try breastfeeding and plenty of people ignore that and nothing is ever said so they can't pick and choose what they enforce.

My first birth was really traumatic so I think I’m gonna take a few newborn cloth diapers. Then just use them on the way home Incase I just don’t wanna have to deal with cloth in the hospital. I really wish I felt like I could handle it but I’m not sure about it lol. Plus our hospital doesn’t support cloth diapering.

It's hard going into the hospital after a traumatic birth. That is exactly how I felt with my birth with Scarlett. I was scared as shit because Hazel's birth was so traumatic. I had an emergency C and she almost died. I was't sure if everything was going to work out or if there would be another emergency. The scar a tramatic birth has on you can effect so much. Luckily, I had amazing staff working with me that day. I know others who had an awful experience at the hospital I was at. I think you have a great mindset going for you! Bring a few and if you don't use them then it's not a big deal. Just feel your way around.

If the stay is only 6 hours then I'd bring enough for every 2hours which would be 3. I'm an over packer so I'd bring 5 for a 6 hour stay just in case baby poops immediately after a diaper change, which does happen some times. We barely went through any changes within those first 6 hours. Maybe 2 diapers? So you really wouldn't need much

I also have a stash question: how many is enough? I know to get atleast enough diapers for 2 days (24), but how do you determine what's enough if you're using different systems and creating both a NB & OS stash. I'd really appreciate your advice! The details of my current stash & what I plan to buy is below. So I have: 3 os diaper covers, 1 sm woolie soaker/cover, 3 gmd nb fitteds, 6 gmd prefolds (preemie-sm to test size), 12 nb aios (9 diy, 2 nickis, 1 thx), 7 os aios (4 diy, 2 fluffy penguin, 1 thx) I plan to buy: 4 nickis nb diaper covers, 1-2 more wool soakers/covers, 9 more gmd fitteds (3 of each: nb, sm, med), 16 more gmd prefolds (8 of each: nb & sm), 6 fst (target), 4-6 gmd muslin flats.

I think 8-10 would be perfect! Just in case you stay a little longer or baby is a poop machine lol. When counting diapers in my stash I never count covers as "diapers" because I cannot use them by itself. So if I have 11 prefolds and 11 covers then I'd say I have 11 diaper changes and not 22. That's how I count diaper changes. I found 36 changes (for a newborn) to be a comfy number if I want to wash every other day. Most babies go through 10-12 diapers a day. 24 will give you enough diapers to wash every day. You have to take into account that you'll need diapers while the dirty ones are washing and drying. If you line dry then that will take even longer dry. Plus some babies go through 15+ diapers a day. My youngest baby did that! It was total opposite of my other children who went through 8-10/day. So it's great to be prepared! Some babies are sensitive to wetness so when they wear cloth they want to be changed immediately. I wouldn't count on one size diapers fitting at birth. Most don't fit until 10 lbs. of course you could make what you have work if you're on a tight budget and have to make it work. If your baby is on the bigger side like 9-11 lbs at birth then your baby should fit in one size decently. It'll be bulky but it'll work. I've seen that a lot of babies under the 7lb mark have a hard time fitting in newborn diapers sometimes. Their legs are so tiny. There are ways you can adjust the diaper to fit tiny legs (I have a video on that in my newborn cloth diaper 101 playlist).

Thank you sweetie! ❤ It depends on the type of diaper. There are a few different styles/diapering systems. Each style has its own unique look and functions a little differently. You have to completely change the diaper if you have an "all in one" or "pocket" diaper- much like a disposable it's a one time use. So you'd have to wash it before you can use it again.. If you use covers with inserts then you just change the insert at every diaper change until the cover gets dirty/wet/or poop on it. I kind of** went over the different types in my last video "what does a modern cloth diaper look like". I compare the ease of use to a disposable. I will be making a few other in-depth videos about the different types and their functionalities.

Depending on the weight of your baby it might be too big. If your baby is 10-12lbs at birth then it’s workable but if you have a 6-9lb baby then it would probably be really big at birth under the cord. I do have a Flip diaper cover hack. It’s made by BG and same design, but it’s a cover. That hack might work with the pocket. What you have it stuffed with could make a difference too though. I actually liked the fit of BG (in 2015) around 9lbs, but she was maybe 1.5- 2m old at the time.

@@JaysNest I just saw your video about the flip diaper cover hack. It looks like a very smart option, and worth trying out. I will definitely give it a try and see if it works for us. I am thinking, in case it doesn't, as a backup solution I will use disposables. I found an interesting product that the manufacturer claims to be 30 % biodegradable, with a cotton surface on the inside and no chlorine, formaldechides, parabenes and dioxins. Looks like an acceptable temporary option to me, that we may have to try out in case the flip diaper cover hack doesn't work for us. Thank you very much for your reply Jay, and for your advises!

I have cloth diapered 2 newborns, but only after meconium.....I am expecting a baby in August. Any tips for dealing with meconium in cloth diapers? THANKS!

I had no issues with meconium. We did get staining on a few diapers from it but after sunning it, it completely went away! You don't need to spray and you don't need liners for it either. Just treat it like your other poppy diapers. I know some mom's are easily bothered by stains. I know meconium poop holds one of the biggest myths in the cloth diapering world. We washed the diapers, sunned them, and used them a few times before the meconium stains fully went away. Some moms don't have issues with staining at all 😀 I guess it would be a personal preference. But it's nothing a little sun couldn't handle! I hope that's helpful information for you. My advice: Don't be too scared of meconium. ❤

My toddler went through 5-6 diapers a day. My newborn went through an average of 15 diapers a day. Most newborns go through 10-12/day. So roughly 20 diaper changes a day

Our nurses don’t help us with anything even after. It’s awful you even bring your own formula if you can’t breast feed. I liked having my baby in there with me and the fact I took care of her. Honestly, I would have loved some help though. I was in the hospital alone after a Trumatic birth and on pain killers. No one would help me care for the baby...

That sounds so unusual. The hospitals here provide formula, diapers, wipes, etc through insurance. I guess it could vary on your insurance. I have had multiples through the years and always had that stuff provided for me, along with breastfeeding and pumping supplies. Have you looked into other hospitals in your area? I gave birth at St Francis 3x and it was complete shit. I have to drive an hour away to the hospital I use but it is worth it. Do you have a plan in place for this birth in case of a similar birth? I will say that statistics show first labors being much harder than subsequent labors. It's always nice to have an extra hand after labor: family member, close friend, etc. Some hospitals are strict on visitors though so I guess you'd have to look into the regulations behind that. Also, does your hospital have a nursery?

Jay's Nest My hospital provides stuff but not much. They only do diapers, wipes, and a blanket. I actually have 2 different insurances. My first is awesome and covers almost 100% of everything and the second will pick up any left over co-pays. I honestly just think my hospital sucks. We have a nursery but they say its not their jobs to help keep the baby. They only help and wake over baby in NICU. They take the baby to be washed then the only other time you will see nurses is if you need IV stuff or to get your blood pressure taken.

Jay's Nest They are great about visitors. I can have 3-4 in the labor room with me. Then as many people can visit my regular room as they want whenever they want. They just don’t do a lot for you.

That is a bummer to hear your hospital is like that. Usually L&D nurses are a bit more interactive than that (coming from my experiences here). I hope you're able to have a healing labor this time around! It's good that they're so relaxed about the visitor policy. The hospitals I have delivered at have an exremely strict rule of 2 guests in the rooom at a time. So that is great that they are a bit more lienient!
