The module ‘Fingerspelling’ in the British Sign Language Level 1 Award introduces learners to the rules of fingerspelling. Choose your dominant hand and learn to fingerspell. Here are some tips to getting fingerspelling just right. Don’t sign too large, have a specific space, and avoid looking at your hands. Also, it is best you look directly at the person you’re signing. Fingerspelling is primarily used to spell out the names of people and places.

What makes the British Sign Language Level 1 Award Stand Out?
British Sign Language was officially recognised by the UK Government in 2003 as a minority language. The World Federation of the Deaf indicates there are 70 million people whose first language is sign language. The range of qualifications in BSL has led individuals towards qualified status as sign language interpreters or a career working with deaf people. An Ofqual-regulated qualification, BSL is a visual-gestural language consisting of its own principles and grammar.
