Many thanks for the tips. As a car driver with 45 years experience and having driven all over the world, I concur totally with your statement about the fact that you never stop learning. I haven't! Having been put on hold for the last couple of years, waiting to continue with my driver training, I am at last taking my Advanced Driving Test in mid December. Before then, I'll will continue to read my Roadcraft - Police Driver's Hand Book and watch more of your videos, to clarify the reading that I have done. Again, many thanks! :)

Having just returned from a weeks holiday, including driving on unfamiliar roads in and around the Wear Valley, I have a challenge for you. Would it be possible for you to make a video, driving in a similar area of unfamiliarity, were the roads twist and undulate with little indication of what can be expected on the far side, over blind summits! Add to this sun strike, being reflected off greasy, leaf srewen, varying width roads, which flashes like strobe lights, through the branches of trees and bushes along shadowy roadside embankments! :) It certainly challenged my driving abilities!

Just arrived home from receiving a 'First' on my IAMs Advanced Driver Test. I want to thank you 'Reg' for all that you contributed to that success, particularly through all these first class instructional videos. I think I now probably sound like you; I certainly found using some of your phrases helpful and a useful demonstration to the Examiner, and previously to my great instructor, that I knew what I was about.

This test requirement is to add some extra challenge so worth learning to do. I'll go and find your video on parking. Hi Reg. Something you may want to share regarding advanced test day ? If you could share your thoughts on any overtaking perception during their test ? Some folk feel nervous balancing restraint and progress under scrutiny of an examiner. There isn't always enough speed differential to legally pass the traffic in front when the associate feels it might be expected of them ? Also the candidate might appreciate some guidance regarding this area ? I found that doing commentary helped me illustrate MY "planning" . This helped me share my thought process and I found less need to perform overtakes which I didn't feel met the S.L.A.P requirements.... Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge !

Surely a 1st COULD come down to luck, like clear roads as opposed to heavy traffic. We've all had those days were we set out for a nice drive but we run into Tractors, Cycling clubs, Temporary Road Works, Old ladys going to farm shops etc. As a motorcyclist and motorist l find it impossible to take over 3 cars being held back by a 90 year old in my car but l can pick them off on the bike 🏍 I'm going to apply for advanced motorcycle test soon, so thank you very much for these videos 📹 really appreciate it 😊

Hi. Enjoyed the presentation very much. I'm seven runs into my IAM course. I'm 68 years old and wanted to do the IAM to ensure I'm still safe to drive and to ensure I'm not a hazard to others and draw my attention to anyting I may be lacking on. My observer is very please with my driving from day one saayng it's smooth and safe. I am being picked up on my speed. I do not enjoy driving up to the speed limit all of the time. I wanted to know I was safe and not become a rally driver. In a 30 area I'll probably drive at 25 to 29 MPH. On a national speed limit Ill probably waander between 45 and 55 depending on traffic, hazards etc. On a motorway I'll probably use 55 to 60 and increasing to 70 to pass trucks etc. I drive to MPG (miles per gallon) not MPH. I now have an electric car so range is the most important thing so I want to see those miles per kWh to be in the 3.5 to 4.0. Am I going to fail the advance test because of my lack of "progress"?

Feel like taking an Advanced driving test just go for it, I find it has added a new dimension to my driving :-) . I used to get incredibly bored driving, that peaked when I was doing 60k + a year as a field engineer. I always liked driving and passed the RoSPA Silver after a total of 10 hours observed driving 30 years after passing my standard driving test. Buy copy of Roadcraft, a copy of up to date Highway code and the observed sessions were free for the car apart from my petrol. On the test jus drive how you would normally do (keep consistency by driving to that same IPSGA method at all times so it becomes second nature) and echo to have a clean car with clear windows kept clear by car ventilation where needed and relax. The examiner may feel like giving one or two tips/hints they will be aware that you are nervous and will try and put you at ease if my experience is anything to go by.

Hi Reg. Thanks so much for this series of videos. They inspired me to join IAM and I am currently working with a fantastic observer here in East Yorkshire. Just a quick question to you as an examiner: Would you award a first to a candidate who used adaptive cruise control on test? My observer says it proves you understand the vehicle controls and allows you to concentrate more on observation and planning, but a part of me thinks it takes away from the skill of regulating speed using the gas pedal. Just wondered what your thoughts are please. Thanks again for the channel and the inspiration!!

Not speeding was one of the hardest aspects for me of test prep. Interestingly I got much better when my observer told me to turn off the non legal digital instro and use the analogue. Funny because as an engineer I was convinced I was better at reading the numbers. Also had to build in a speed check to my sequential observation scan, before I got it good enough.

In my experience (and apologies if this doesn’t apply to you Debbie), one of the most common causes of nerves on the motorway is driving at a speed which puts you in and amongst the heavy goods vehicles on their 56mph speed limiters. It’s counterintuitive at first, but increasing your speed closer to the 70mph limit is less stressful & means you’re generally passing large vehicles on your left, rather than being passed by them close to your driver’s door on your right. Keep an eye on your mirrors, use your observations to help you avoid gettin boxed in & try to relax. Above everything else, just practice as much as you can & you’ll get over your motorway nerves.

Another great video Reg, thank you. I had my fourth observed session on Sunday and came away with some very humbling feedback. I was so pleased. But there were areas where I felt I could have done a little better. I've been driving since 1987 and eliminating some old habits hasn't proved as difficult as expected...except maybe brake gear overlap, but I'm getting there. One overlap on the session... Great advice for prepping for the test. I'll certainly watch this agin. As well as your other videos! Out of interest, what bike do you ride? Thanks!

Hi Reg, I took my advanced test a short while ago but I came away with some issues. I did pass but on the test the issues were:- 1) On a blind sharp left-hand country road, my instructor said to be close to the left verge in case an opposing car is cutting the corner. My examiner said to be further out so I have somewhere to go in case of an opposing car being near the white line. Still not sure what this should be - I know we should be in a position to see further down the road past the corner but I can also see we should be close to the left verge as there would be no time to react if an opposing car cuts the corner. 2) My examiner asked what I could see on a flat scene with good visibility. I could see cars on the horizon but the examiner wanted me to say "I can see cars so I can adjust my speed when I come to the junction with the cars I can see in the distance." It wasn't clear that the road I was on actually joined the traffic I could see. It could have gone under/over/parallel but the examiner "assumed" I knew this road - I didn't. 3) A car moved into my lane as I was entering a traffic-controlled roundabout. Not a problem as I just held back. The examiner asked "whose fault would that be?" and I struggled to respond. I came away thinking I had done something wrong. Afterwards, I believe I think I did exactly the right thing but the examiner appeared critical. 4) My instructor never took me out in his car to show me what was expected with commentary. I did go to a 3-in-a-car (actually 2-in-a-car) and I learnt a load from this but was disappointed in my instructor not doing this. I would still like to take further IAM courses but got a bit disillusioned. I got more from your "brake-gear overlap" than I did from the course. Thanks

Any tips with dealing with and the correct attitude with tailgaters.
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 4 жыл бұрын
The safest way to deal with tailgaters is to increase your gap from the vehicle in front. That way you won’t have to brake too hard if the vehicle in front brakes sharply, so there is less risk the tailgater will run into you. If they’re really bad, pull over & let them past.

It would be good to explain the comments about left foot breaking in automatics. Just watched video 39 on Automatics and appreciate the point about getting the car to balance before accelerating. When the handbrake is required e.g. pedestrian crossing where you could get shunted then I would always use the handbrake, so left foot brake is not a substitute for the handbrake. If a pedestrian is actually in front of the car I would have both brakes applied though. I might also use the left foot brake in crawling traffic on a steep hill, in addition to the handbrake when there is time to apply the handbrake. Really prefer manual handbrakes to electric for the speed of operation, but if unfortunate to have a slow electric brake, then left foot brake can help (don't like the jerk of driving off against an electric handbrake). Many thanks for all the videos. I'll go out and practice video 39 when I'm allowed out.

Hi Reg, when it comes to the reversing manoeuvre would you be required to do it the hard way, or do you have the option of an easier way? For example driving forward into a parking bay then reversing straight in? You mention this in your parking video about making things easier for yourself, and in the real world we'd probably all do that if needed, but it's a bit unclear what the test standard would be. There's one general comment I have on speeding as well, which is in the real world there have been times where I consider it appropriate to temporarily break the limit for safety reasons if circumstances require it and this won't create another hazard. For instance, being by a HGV weaving and swerving in lane. It's safer to overtake at 75mph and get quickly out the way of the hazard. Same thing for being behind a bad driver doing 55 in a national speed limit. A by-the-book "this must be completely 100% legal" overtake is actually far more dangerous. Any thoughts on that as an advanced driver?
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 4 жыл бұрын
Just make the reverse as easy as possible for yourself. However you do that is up to you, but generally I’ll be more impressed with a candidate who does a straightforward easy reverse, than someone who faffs about & makes it harder for themselves! As for speed - on test, stick within speed limits. Themz the rulez. Away from a test scenario, I may well agree with you though...

@@RegLocal A local examiner and one of my local observers could never agree on the speed side of overtakes. From the examiners view "I'm happy for someone to exceed the limit by an mph or two to complete a safe overtake". The observer stance "if you have to exceed the speed limit to complete the overtake, the overtake isn't on; plain and simple". I just stick to the speed limit personally; I might get fewer overtakes in, but I'm safe and legal. I haven't yet been criticised for not taking an overtake.

About the Brake Gear Overlap. Tell me please if it is acceptable what i do: brake, when the engine rpm gets too low for the current gear press the clutch, change to a lower gear based on the target speed at the end of the braking period, (brake applied, clutch pressed), release the brake pedal, release the clutch with maybe a bit of throttle. Definitely I do not release the clutch before releasing the brake pedal (before reaching the target speed), that would make the car wobble back and forward. I find that pressing the brake, pressing the clutch when rpm is low, finish braking, and then change gears, takes a bit more, and rides the clutch a bit more than it should.

Thank you for what you are doing, it really helps. I have practiced the steering method you presented (feeding the wheel) and it makes so much more difference. Feedback from the car is to another level. I guess I should start practicing removing BGOL from my habit, even though, as you said, it seems counter intuitive , even weird, at first. My country (Romania) is one of the worst in Europe when it comes to road incidents and I am willing to learn every method that would increase the chance of keeping my car at a considerable distance from any such road incident. For years now I have always went down the gear box 5 4 3 2 etc on approach to junctions and roundabouts, the IAM say I have to block change. Surely it makes sense to use the gear box to slow the vehicle rather than use brakes especially when you don't know what the road surface is like eg there could be a fuel spillage and on a wet road this could be lethal. Even in winter with icy roads you wouldn't use brakes. Why can't we use common sense when driving ??

I have a question please found within PDF: carrying-out-driving-instructor-tests-and-checks-adi Question concerns 2.25, I wish to reverse bay park by first forward bay, then line up reverse back. I've been told it will confuse the odd examiner yet it is in 2.25, thanks Dan

Very interesting video, thanks. I passed the IAM test many years ago now and while I can and did separate the braking and gears perfectly well, I never really understood exactly why I was doing it, other than that it was expected, especially on a motorcycle. Can you explain please?

Hi Reg, I have watched all of your videos but wondered if you could shed abit more light on automatic transmissions, I know you say we shouldn't change down the gears etc, but how do you see things with autos? What I mean is most of the time the gear selection is out of our control, that is unless it is put into manual mode. Would you expect a person to use manual mode when necessary?.

Reg, that's a fabulous presentation, thank you. But, if I get you as my examiner, I'm bringing a wig for you to wear so I'm not overawed. You may also notice that my commentary may have a Lancashire burr. My wife says I really need to start speaking in normal Scouse.

Reg!! I passed with a First! 🙂😲 Having John H as my observer, and signposting me to you and Chris the ex Police instructor vids has got me through. Thank you! We even had a close follow overtake us on a left handed bend without a safe bubble to land in, taking the last of four close following bunch of vehicles, it being a Learner driver, just avoiding a head on collision. There being no opportunity for me to overtake on the test, commentary was helpful. Cheers man.

I recently failed my advance assessment one of the marks was due to a very poorly surfaced road , I was doing 25mph without holding up other cars should I have been going slower.?

I am currently doing driving instructor training, module 2. I drive an automatic car but I want to take a test as a manual driver/instructor . My instructor’s car is manual but it’s the only practice I get. Would I benefit from changing my automatic to a manual (I have a manual drivers licence)?
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't bother if it's just for your ADI part 2 - the part 2 test is effectively just a normal DVSA test which lasts a bit longer and has a higher pass mark, so not the same as an advanced test. I'm sure you'll get enough practice in your instructor's car to be able to pass the part 2.

Hi Reg, would you say this guidance differs in any way, or is there anything else you'd add in for Masters tests?
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 4 жыл бұрын
The fundamental advice would be the same, but the expectation on Masters test is that every element needs to be performed to the highest possible standard, with a longer commentary and more emphasis on progress, especially cornering & overtaking.

I think you have more options in NI than in the Republic Adrian, although I can recommend Colm Branigan at www.advanced-driving.ie Colm has done some training with me in the UK. Also, I’ll be in County Sligo again next summer for 3 weeks of you’d like a days coaching!

Masters tests are generally only carried out by IAM Reginal Quality Managers (staff examiners), so no, at the moment I only examine for advanced car & bike tests.

Seems almost unbelievable that you can be with someone who already has a licence, probably has an interest in driving and has experience (the fact they are doing an advanced test), has been through 10 weeks of advanced training yet you have to intervene as an examiner.
