Those who go for watersports use a thing called "dry bags". Brands like Sea to Summit make excellent 100 per cent water proof dry bags (in various sizes) in which one can pack his stuff and keep it inside the backpack. They are extremely thin and very very well made. They are even air tight, when locked properly. Regarding water proof pants - one has to remember that when you wear them, evaporation of the perspiration gets compromised - and when you trek you do perspire a lot, even if it is very cold. Even though you can keep the rains out, you might get wet from the sweat that forms and does not evaporate. You can somewhat solve the problem by going for the best brands in the world like Marmot Precip but two problems there A. They are not available here B. They cost a bomb. But if you are trekking in Indian Himalayas, no matter what time of the year, prepare for it to rain.

Even if we carry spare socks, sometimes we run out of changing options, having used them all up on different days of the trek. I was wondering whether it's safe to reuse a pair of socks that had been wet earlier but has subsequently dried?

Hi Swati, I tried a 60L backpack. The firm pad which they have in the bag is above my neck level. So it is not allowing me to move my head even slightly back.It kind of touches my head when I move my head back. But, I am not noticing this issue in 50L. Is this something common in any backpacks and I should get used to this? I am thinking that may make me to be in forward head posture while tekking which will result in neck pain.Please suggest something. BTW my height is 5.3
@swathichatrapathy93477 жыл бұрын
Hi! It is fairly normal for your backpack to come in the way of tilting your head backwards. But if you find it very restricting, then go for the 50 L backpack - that will also suffice for 8-9 day treks. If it isn't letting you keep your head straight at all, then don't go for it.

For valley of flowers trek in August should one carry both rain jacket and poncho? Or only poncho is enough?
@swathichatrapathy10586 жыл бұрын
If you have a rain cover for your backpack, then you can just take a rain jacket and the rain cover for your backpack. Otherwise you can carry one poncho, it covers you and your backpack. But trekking with a poncho is a little cumbersome.

Swathi Chatrapathy thank you for the reply. I will go for a rain jacket and rucksack cover.

Hi Swathi, can you please suggest the best way to pack my DSLR camera for a week long trek? I would hate to carry it round my waist while climbing. The trek's in the last week of August.

Hi I am going for Hampta Pass . I assume I need 60L backpack.But,I assume I may want to go for longer duration trek in future. Since I want to buy only one for all. Can I go for 70L ones.
@swathichatrapathy93477 жыл бұрын
Hi! I would suggest going for a 55 litre backpack. It's the ideal size for most treks. We manage even 12-13 day treks with this size. Unless you're planning expeditions independently, where you have to take a cooking stove and carry your own tents and sleeping bag, you don't need a backpack of a higher capacity.

thanks Swati . Will buy the same

hi is it risky to take cameras and accessories during monsoon trek
@Sudipto17Kolkata7 жыл бұрын
Depends on how well you are prepared to protect your gear in the rains. It is most definitely going to rain. You have to ask yourself whether you are prepared for that. If yes, go ahead. If not then keep the camera at home.

Full length pants or shorts or knee length pants Which are more preferable in monsoon trek ( in valley of flowers) ?
@Indiahikes2 жыл бұрын
Definitely full length pants. Any time you're trekking in the Himalayas, we recommend full length pants. This is because there are several thorny bushes and shrubs that you may have to walk through. It's good to have convertible pants for river crossings n things, but always full pants.

hi swathi..I'm going to trek for valley of flowers in the middle of august so my question is whether waterproof shoes is necessary or not for trekking in this monsoon weather
@swathichatrapathy93477 жыл бұрын
Hi Samir, you do need waterproof shoes. The Valley of Flowers is an especially rainy trek. You could check out few of the shoes we have reviews - they are good for most Himalayan treks - indiahikes.com/category/product-reviews/

Hello Swathi, Since I see that you reply and questions don't go much ignored, I'll ask you mine. Please tell me how to cook during solo treks. Would I find firewood easily ? Or would I have to take a kerosene stove ? are there any regulations as to amount of wood we're using as fuel ? Thank you.
@swathichatrapathy10586 жыл бұрын
Hi Pratod! I do try and respond as much as I can. :) If you're going on a solo trek, it's best if you can take a small pump stove with you. You could use firewood as well, but as per the regulations, you're not allowed to light any kind of a fire in forests. So to stay on the safe side, take a stove with you! Make sure you use it outside your tent, in the open. And you may have to purchase kerosene locally because they won't let you take it on the flight.

Hi Swathi, could you suggest where can I get a raincover for my backpack?
@kalpantumdi8987 жыл бұрын
devayani dixit you can visit decathlon for that
@swathichatrapathy93477 жыл бұрын
Hi Devayani, most good backpacks come with a raincover included. If you already have a backpack, you can check right at the bottom / base of the backpack. That's where there is usually a small (nearly invisible) pouch with a rain cover inside it. Otherwise, you can buy it separately You can buy it online from Amazon, Decathlon, anywhere. It isn't hard to get. Just pick up the right size for your backpack.

Hi swati.. thanks for your informative video. We recently went to sandakphu trek and faced rain on all days of trek. From secnd day onward we started putting things in plastic bags. But the main concern were our shoes. They never were dried up and people had to walk with wer shoes throughout the trek. Could you provide some useful suggestion about this?
@swathichatrapathy10586 жыл бұрын
Hi Sanchita, this is a genuine problem. I spoke to a few of our trek leaders. They have some good tips - Take the insole out and leave it to dry after your day's trek. That way at least your insole will be dry when you put it on the next morning. - You also get these things called Drysteppers. You could buy a pair of those if you're going to trek in winter. It's something that you wear over your shoes. - One more hack (might seem funny) is to use surgical gloves over your socks. (This is coming from one of our Trek Leaders who was a dentist, so I'm not surprised. :P) But he says it keeps your feet dry. Trekking with wet shoes is alright, but you should keep your feet dry after your day's trek. That's the most important part. That's why we recommend woollen socks for the night, so your feet are completely dry and warm for at least 8-10 hours in a day. I hope this helps you! :)

Great Generic Tips ! But the cover thumbnail image shows the backpack is not adjusted well... Hanging till the butt is not the way to wear backpack!!! people wearing backpack wrong is a major issue than wet stuff !
