Woolen sweters should be avoided when you are trekking. You must carry a goretex jacket which is a double jacket ( fleece inside and waterproof and wind proof outside). The down jacket (padded jacket)should be worn in a dry cold weather or if you are indoors. Never wear a down jacket in wet weather. For tshirt,carry polyester tshirts which dries quickly. Avoid cotton tshirts because they dont dry quickly and can be very uncomfortable when you sweat while hiking. Drink plenty of water on the trek. Eat well during the trek. Avoid alcohol beverages during the trek.

I am not so sure about this. Many people wear merino clothes and these works better than synthetic, also all first mountaineers were using woolen clothes.

I would just add that taking an umbrella along would be useful and convenient. When you are in camp and it is raining (it often does) and you need to go only from your tent to the dining tent, an umbrella is way more convenient than a poncho first in using and then on drying it out. Then even while trekking if it is raining, it may be helpful in keeping dryer for the umbrella to take the first blow of the rain, and let the poncho deal with the residue. Though i would agree this depends if you have your hands free or not. It is quite convenient to carry. One can easily fit it onto the top of the backpack you are carrying. I have done 2 Himalayan treks with Indiahikes and looking back the umbrella is one gear i would think of adding.

Does Indiahikes provide tent and sleeping bags as well? They are a must in any kind of trek where there is a chance of rain or snow. You need a properly rated sleeping bag for the time of the year you are going for the trek. You also need a properly ventilated tent with rainfly attached so that you can rest inside it in the case of rain or snowfall. Most of all, you need good quality shoes since they can make or break your trip. Don't take sports or running shoes for the trek in the Himalayas as they would rub off easily and they won't have a good grip in the snow and definitely won't be waterproof. Also, you need to carry some sort of food and maybe a portable stove if you can't find a place to eat. I am not sure about the Himalayan treks but treks here in the US can lead to a wilderness where there won't be any stall, hotel, dhaba, etc. So I carry a portable gas stove as small as a cigarette lighter which I attach to a small propane cylinder and boil water from it to cook instant noodles or oats. Best of luck to everyone going for a trek and be safe.

I really enjoy all your videos ...however I feel there are a lot of things here that needs to be clarified ...such as, no cotton on mountain please, it tends to get wet from sweat and freezes you from inside, always always carry water wicking materials. For higher altitudes SPF 40 wont work ... Poncho is practical yes but rarely effective in high winds...Nalgene water bottles !!! ....Gaiters, did we forget to mention them? having said that i don't want to sound too critical because this is a very informative video for beginners.

Temperature matters only when you're static, once you start trekking the need for clothes changes. Wearing too much will cause discomfort. I don't recommend wearing fleece as first layers as it's gets sweaty inside while trekking and creates discomfort. I use sports tshirt, fleece (maybe 2), waterproof trekking jacket for top and sports lower, thermal followed by trek pant (can be adjusted according to temperature or your trekking speed) for bottom. Eating right things will also help you maintaining your energy and body temperature. Avoid craps like maggie.

@Indiahikes2 жыл бұрын
You will need to carry it till the end. :) Keep your backpack light, weighing just about 7-8 kilos. Wear your backpack right and you will not feel the weight of it. If you have excess luggage, then perhaps you can leave it behind at a hotel in Shimla, where you're staying.

Wildcraft has some good rucksacks. You can take a look at those. Make sure the backpack suits your height and is sturdy and well-balanced. This article will help you choose the right backpack - indiahikes.com/choose-right-backpack-trek/ As for shoes, go for something with good grip and high ankle support. @swathichatrapathy93478 жыл бұрын
Hi Raunak, I wouldn't advice you to camp at the summit for two reasons - one there is really no space at the summit to pitch a tent. Two, it's winter and the Chandrashila summit is prone to a lot of snow when it snows. Instead, try and camp around Tungnath, under one of the shelters built there. It is just a 40-50 minute climb from Tungnath to Chandrashila.

What should be the ideal 5-layer combination for winter treks?

Hi Manish. You can carry 2 fleece jackets, 2 woollens, one padded jacket. Keep a pair of thermals for the night. Make sure you carry the woollen cap, gloves and woollen socks as well. You won't need to wear these while trekking, but after sundown, it gets very cold.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll note it for my upcoming winter trek.

Hey that's awesome! :) Wear thermals only at night. While trekking, you'll be exercising, so you won't feel too cold. Keep the thermals fresh for the night. Don't let them get sweaty!

Wear the thermals only while sleeping. If you wear it while trekking, it will get wet with sweat and might not dry up by night. So always keep your thermals fresh for the night.

Hi swati. this is very useful information to me. I'm going for brahmatal trek in April. Do i need to carry sleeping bag?

Hi Souvik, if you're trekking with Indiahikes, you don't have to take a sleeping bag with you. If you're trekking by yourself, you will have to - a sleeping bag that can withstand temperatures below zero degrees - preferably up to -5 degrees.
