When we travel with our five kiddos, we buy groceries and eat most of our meals in our rental home and have a couple splurge lunch/dinner meals. But when we travel just as a couple, it’s typically faster paced and we’ve learned we don’t want to stop and cook just for the two of us. That tip about being honest with yourself about cooking is such a good one!!

When I was on my day trip, I packed a thermos of iced tea, couple water bottles, and brown bagged my lunch. All I had to do is have a seat and a quick bite, and back to seeing the sights. As a early dinner before my train ride back home, I did stop off at a McDonald's next to the Woodley-Park Metro. Food at Union Station tends to be pricey.

My culinary goals for my upcoming D.C. trip come down to two things: the half-smoke and Ethiopian cuisine.

We are a family of 5. Breakfast will be at the airbnb, lunch will be while we are out, although we will bring snacks to nosh on while walking. I am planning a minimum of 2 dinners out and 2 dinners in. (6 day trip) which leaves the other 2 dinners up for grabs. I honestly think that the majority of our groceries will be snacks. Will we probably throw out food? Maybe. But the last time we did this we winded up having to make an additional food run for milk and eggs. So yes, I agree about being honest with yourself

When I visit DC I always stay at the Marriott Residence Inn. There is a huge Walmart in Downtown DC that I go to to get all my favorites that I cook in my hotel room.

Thanks for the video. I think that cooking for yourself in the US is much easier than in many other countries, you have many hotels with a kitchen compared to other places. That what i did when i visited DC.

Compared to other countries, yes.

Mcdonald's saved me so much on breakfast. The hotel wanted $14 dollar breakfast, mcdonald's topped out at 5 bucks

When I visited DC a few months ago, I packed breakfast bars and ate them in my hotel room every morning. So I didn’t buy breakfast any day I was there:)

Awesome video!! Great tip to make lunch the splurge meal. Random question: is it feasible to do a day trip to the Basilica of the national shrine of immaculate conception? I am not Catholic but have seen and heard this place is stunningly beautiful. Not sure if you've mentioned or made a video of this? We will be staying in the national mall. Is it a worthwhile side trip? How long does it take to get there? (If you know). Thank you in advance for your time and sharing all this DC wisdom!!!! I greatly enjoy your channel and am a happy subscriber 😀

Yes. It's feasible. Pretty easy to get there from downtown on the Red Line.
