I rarely do long haul flights on VATSIM, but one long haul flight had teached me a lesson. Do not exceed the 2.30 AM local time! My flight from Istanbul to Houston had ended up in 3.00 AM and I was doing a real world flight in real time. After the day of flight, I felt sluggish a bit but it had ceased shortly. After this flight, I decided to check the flight's scheduled times of departure and arrival in UTC and convert it to my location's local time. By the way, I had an another experience like that. After my flight from Miami to Istanbul, I felt exhausted and took a nap afterwards. Because I had slept like 2.40 AM after finishing the Istanbul-Miami leg. But I had a gap between the inbound leg and outbound leg for a day of course, pretending that I'm having a layover with my crew ;) . I woke up like 5 AM to do the return leg. Maybe it was also because of this. It's a different experience though. My flights to US had usually ended up like 1.30 AM and 2.00 AM. It can be tiring, but enjoyable.

Good tips and hints ! Thanks for sharing. Long haul flights are not for the average flight simmer... Its another level of commitment. I do 13-15hrs flights sometimes (you'll find me on VATSIM covering EDDF-SCEL with Lufthansa Cargo or FNLU-KIAH with Atlas Air :) two of my favorite long haul routes ) and I do all the preparation, fuel upload and boarding with real life time too. Sometimes it takes about 1hr30mins to fuel a plane ( PMDG 747,777) and another 6-10 mins to align the ADIRU/IRS, 20 mins to board ( or load cargo ) during that time I go over every detail of the flight plan, prepare my charts and of course set up food, drinks and movies to watch. If you can afford to do it, its really fun... After all aviation requires patience. If you want to start doing long haul trips, start off with adding an hour to every 'short haul' flight . Before you know it, you'll be doing 6hrs flights and even over 12hr flights. Find someone who shares the passion for long haul flights and try to fly with them when you can... Even on 6hr flights. Group long haul flights are a good venture as well. One thing to consider is, you should clear off your schedule on the day you are doing a very long haul flight... On my 10hours and above flights, I make sure I have no commitments or distractions during the time I want to simulate the long haul. Lastly, fly for a VA (Virtual Airline ) it will give purpose to your long haul trips.

You’re welcome! Absolutely, I agree :) I’m pretty much disturbed by someone or something every day so a long haul for me is rare, but indeed it feels great to block out a day in your agenda and to prepare and execute the flight as realistically as possible!

I love long haul because as a student, when I get a lot of HW or need to do a lot of studying, long haul keeps me bound to my desk, and it kinda motivates me to study or finish up my hw, although personally I find the A/C noise distracting and mute it while I‘m studying, albeit ATC I gotta keep an eye out for. I also recommend Trans-Pacific/Atlantic routes as there‘s usually not a lot a people so not much ATC disturbance.

As someone who is pretty new to Vat Sim I don’t really understand the appeal of the long haul flights, especially when there is no ATC involved and you’re on Unicom almost the whole time and autopilot for 7 hours while giving up sleep. I much prefer the 30 to 60 minute flights with general aviation aircraft that involves a lot of ATC in a short period of time. Maybe it’s also that I have 5 kids and don’t have the time or energy to put that much into simming haha. To each his own I guess. Enjoy! Your videos have helped me as I have gotten into VAtsim.

New to VATSIM here, and have only done short-range flights. So... I can see the potential problem with leaving your sim unattended when ATC "pops-up" (comes online when their airspace you were flying in was previously unattended). And, this isn't including events like CTP, just a normal day in VATSIM with no events, midweek madnesses, or friday night ops whatsoever...) Is it possible to take off under ATC, then cruise until out of ATC coverage, then disconnect VATSIM? And then, maybe 2 hours before landing, can you connect back to VATSIM? (Assuming that when you connect back to VATSIM, you'll be in controlled airspace, and that you've checked that you'll be out of the way of traffic / not disrupt traffic flow if you do connect back?) I mean, hey, simulating the long haul crew rest shift periods too! Haha
@AviationPro4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that. Just make sure when you reconnect it's not in busy airspace (I would highly discourage to reconnect after Top of Descent) and that you're not ending up where someone else is flying.
@SkyBlooSims4 жыл бұрын
@@AviationPro Thanks for the advice. Yeah if ever I did long hauls, I'd reconnect maybe an hour before ToD (which would be 400-500 miles prior depending on groundspeed) on the enroute airway, provided I've checked with say, VATSpy or Vattastic that I won't be immediately disrupting other a/c in the immediate airspace.

@AviationPro6 жыл бұрын
Good question! I just remove the side of my case whenever gaming or simming. I kind of have to otherwise it won't cool down properly. In winter it helps with warming the room haha. But if you are getting solid temperatures near 85 all the time, you might indeed consider lowering your overclock or give the system more air by removing a side panel.

Task manager > affinity set, u can set just one core. Also go power options, set maximum cpu usage 40% maybe. And one more tip, go wingview, pan to sky(only sky view), therefore your gpu won’t be used much ;)

Minimise the sim and the demand on the cpu drops right off, that’s what I do once in cruise and disconnect from vatsim

if we're talking vatsim, longest flight was 5 hours, Moscow to Dubai and back. But in general my longest flight was 16 hours....

You can always call co-pilot and sleep some 3 hours.
