Wes, I am amazed at how many people (sailors) I know who have watched all of your videos. We do sunset sails out of New Bern, NC (just down the road from Oriental). Last night we took out a young couple from Utah who want to buy a sailboat and go cruising just like you and Kate. I told them they should watch your videos and they said they had already watched them all. To me, (sailed for over 60 years) what makes your videos so charming is that you didn't attempt to hide the fact that you were a novice when you and Kate just 'took off'. You made the expected newcomer mistakes and just said 'whoops' look what I did. It was refreshing and very entertaining. I could see how much you had grown and learned over the time you were filming. Hated it when you had to go home. Get back out there ASAP!

Just got back from our first extended sailing trip and discovered your videos...been enjoying them! Crazy how similar our experiences were, we too had a rough, aborted Gulf Stream crossing, among other things. Looking forward to following along with the new adventures.

Those rain squalls are when you grab a bar of soap, strip off, jump on deck and have a lovely cool shower! I agree with you - the magenta line on the chart just shows you which river to go down. Mark I eyeball tells you where to follow the channel marks and even then, keep a close eye on the sounder. Fair winds.

Great to see more of your sailing adventure, thank you for sharing it with us, Wes. Spring tides here in Swansea, Wales can be 10 METRES at times 😦. I am enjoying the daily life vlog of Kate and yourself also, keep them coming. Avidly watching you and best wishes from the UK.

+peoplewatchingpeople 10 meters, that is insane. Talk about needing to play the tides. Thank you for following along it makes it all worthwhile, we will keep it up!

Thanks for sharing Wes. Independence, my Catalina 320 goes into the water next week. Hoping I will have everything done. My 5 year plan is to retire, and take a trip down the ICW and hit the Bahamas. If two kids out of high school can do it, so can we! Good advice on the "follow the marks, not the GPS". Its funny, if you ever get back up to the Chesapeake, specifically the Sassafras River, same thing, GPS course is WAY off. Actually the compass starts spinning the wrong direction as well. Micro black hole? Maybe.

Looks like a very peaceful place. I can hardly wait for my own trip June 2017. Of course for my first trip I will be doing it in my small 20 foot Aquarius sailboat boat with its retractable keel. Wohoo only 8 or so inches of draft with the keel up. Yessss. That is wicked salty shallow. ;-)
@WickedSalty8 жыл бұрын
+Jean Mondeau You'll be able to go everywhere with that draft! Excited for you Jean.

Isn't it easier to sail up the east coast? And the ICW just for going south?

How come you don't sail out in the Atlantic up the coast instead of messing with the ICW and its shallow areas?

My question exactly.

Hi, On a different subject, I enjoy star gazing, and imagine that without terrestrial light pollution, the night sky must be amazing. I never see videos showing the night sky. Is this because it's difficult to photograph? If possible, could you include starry sky videos in one of your videos? Thanks

Wes, check out the seaward 46 rk by Hake yachts. rk stands for raising keel. all the way up and the boat can sail or motor in 2 1/2 feet of water. the rudders are raised also. This would be a great boat for the exumas or icw. see all the youtube vids about this boat. I like the ones where people step off the boat in 3 ft of water at the beach ! :-)

Go out and sail. F the ICW. Duck in at night or when you have to. Perhaps a boat with a shallow draft for ICW cruise To each their own. Have fun.

Watch the video titled: "Mistakes I've made sailing the ICW." You'll see that you are not alone, being confused by the simplicity of charts.
