Here's a video of how I sharpen my Japanese leather skiving knife. There is more than one way to do it, this is just how I do it usually. The stones I used are what I have lying around, but you can definitely use more/fewer whetstones to sharpen your knife depending on the condition of your knife.

Do you maintain the pattern of applying more pressure on the action of pulling towards yourself and holding very minimal pressure pushing strokes throughout every stone ?
@eternal_leather_goods

Yes, because if you push too hard and catch onto something, it’ll chip your blade.

Nice raindrop Damascus blade. Is it a production knife or a custom-built? Japanese made or else.

im having trouble sharpening truly flat on the angled side. as i push and pull i think i am tiliting and the result looks curved/rounded. any tips for this?

@eternal_leather_goods 3 жыл бұрын
You don't really have to sharpen the flat side. Just move it very very lightly along the stone to remove the burr of the blade.

Very helpful. Do you always need to use the 1000 or can you "generally and frequency just use the 5000? Thanks
@eternal_leather_goods
@eternal_leather_goods 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I use the 1000 every time. It brings your knife to a reasonably sharp state. If you only could have one, get the 1000. The 5000 is handy in the final stages but not a must-have.

I noticed when you stroped the knife it was in on a higher angle. Is this on purpose?
@eternal_leather_goods

Yes, I wanted to make sure to strop the very tip on the blade. But the angle of stopping isn’t as important as the stopping board is not a hard surface.

My skiving knife is still soooo dull… I’ve done just about everything I can think of to sharpen it too… my SAK, kitchen knives and bush crafting knives are razor sharp… but I cant get this darn skiving knife to sharpen… I"m beginning to think the steel is too soft… going to look into getting a different skiving blade…

How did that work out - did you get a new skiving knife or did the other one sharpen in the end?
@Hourox11
@Hourox11 Жыл бұрын
I have the same problem, I bought a tool for walls and cement and sharpened it but it is soft and I think it is the problem. I managed to sharpen it torazor sharp but it takes 10 times more time and one angle ends up wider than the other...

@@patriciagleve4784 I chucked the bloody thing in the bin… the steel was just too soft… I bought another blade and it holds an edge… I keep it sharp by pulling it back over a strop every time I use it…

@@Hourox11 I ended up just chucking that one I had in the bin… I bought a different blade from a different seller and have never had a problem with it,,, i pull it back over a strop every time I use it and it has held its edge with no issues….
