I started watching your videos when I was going through chemotherapy last summer, as a way to escape when I couldn’t go anywhere. my travelling life also started after i survived cancer in 2018, (i also hAD it return a few months ago, but im again back in remission yay :)) but after having an illness that could have taken my life, it really made me realise how precious life was and how easily this gift of life that we have all been given can be taken from us. we lost my 26 year old nephew to the same cancer i had, we both had it at the same time and sadly he lost his fight....... i used to be about physical possesions, but after cancer i realised owning this or that was no longer important to be, but making memories was and thats when my travelling life took off fully. we now travel at least 5 times a year, some are cruises, some land based holidays and a lot are local overnight stays in a hotel..... my friends dont understand why i travel so much, but i love my new life exploring australia :) and hopefully one day i will get to travel overseas :) life is too short, get out, feel the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, and live life to the fullest :) as you only get one chance at life.

Gary, I'm very happy to know you resist taking comped cruises. I've worked in the media world and know from experience how easy it is to be influenced by what in essence are bribes. It's very easy to shade your critique when someone else is paying your bills. Refusing comped cruises (unless in unique situations, like the Virgin Voyages) frees you to be honest. It also helps that you provide context for your commentary and recognize that other people may not care in the same way about your concerns.

Flexibility is crucial . Missing is a discussion of non cruise expenses . The air fare , insurance , pre and post arrangements can easily exceed the cost of the cruise itself unless you live near the cruise ports . My last few cruises, the cabin cost was a third of the total cost .
@FraserAtSea2 жыл бұрын
I completely agree on your flexibility points. I often get ‘told’ (not asked) that the only reason I can cruise multiple times a year is because I don’t have kids, when in fact it’s using tricks like you run through here that save enough money to go on multiple!
@petehall19852 жыл бұрын
I have found the fare itself to be around twice as much in school holidays. Very frustrating as my wife is a teacher and so we don't have flexibility but nor does she get a holiday discount code for being a teacher. I think that the teachers should get say 25% off the mark up. I chose to marry her and holiday together and people choose to have kids but we need teachers and whatever dates the school sets as term will be reflected in the price

I'm retired too & a solo traveler. I have some health issues that may keep me from traveling in the future. I Intended to travel for a few years before transitioning into something part time for work. Covid shut things down of course but now they have reopened I'm making up for lost time. I've been on 14 cruises since last September & have 10 more booked in the future. Many of those are back to back though. I have stuck mainly to 2 lines. Casino loyalty programs for Princess & Holland America allow me to cruise for free or at a much reduced rate. I'm not a high roller, but if I win I keep playing & I have a daily limit on spending. Sometimes I'll catch a last minute fare too where you can find good deals! I will likely slow it down next year to maybe 4/year but if I keep getting the free fare offers, who knows. I wouldn't be able to cruise as much as I do without these offers, I wouldn't be able to afford it. I've saved 10's of thousands of $$$ & am seeing some exotic locations. Happy travels!

I am a Cancer Survivor like you and appreciate your videos. My Dad retired to West palm Beach Florida. He and his partner were retired and flexible. Watching the airfare to/from the ports can save a bundle. We had a cruise from Hawaii to Tahiti ( unfortunately cancelled due to covid ). Looking at the fare to Hawaii, United Air offered a credit card deal - $500 plus 50,000 miles for a $3000 spend. I also discovered that by staying to Tuesday to fly back, the airfare was about half what a Saturday to Monday flight would have been. I also see this with frequent flyer deals. Another cancelled deal - flying First/business class Denver to Frankfurt varied from 56,000 to 120,000 miles just 1 day apart.

One way I am trying to cruise more often is to beat the prejudice Princess and others have against Australians. An upcoming cruise in Australia is much cheaper for Americans. Why you ask? Australian travel agents are a protected species. If I book through a well known US agent they tell me that the cruise lines makes them impose a USD100 fee per passenger. Even then then they are hundreds of dollars cheaper. If you use an American address you may get away with the fee. One challenge is that you get a different loyalty number. That is soon sorted out on board at customer service where they have the ability to combine all loyalty numbers. Princess USA, UK and Australia operate as separate companies.

I've had great success with booking guaranteed inside cabins to save on cost. Since I'm not a big drinker, I find that it's cheaper overall to purchase drinks individually on board as well as at the port areas where drinks are often much cheaper. But this is not a priority issue. For the one time my cabin was above the theater area, I changed my nightly habit and had dinner during the first show and attended the second evening show. Or, if I thought I would enjoy it, I attended the same show twice in one evening. Thus, I was able to avoid being annoyed by the background bass sounds from the music in my cabin.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. I'm obviously not a doctor but I follow one on You tube (not to make light of your illness at at all) but he advises eating broccoli sprouts for people who had or have cancer. Apparently it contains 100 x the sulforaphane than regular broccoli. Apparently, sulforaphane goes through the body seeking out cancer cells. When it finds them, it causes apoptosis of those cancer cells but leaves the healthy cells alone. You can get it at any grocery store, pretty much anywhere I'd imagine. It's basically just baby broccoli and it is apparently seriously good for you whether you have cancer or not. Hope you stay healthy and happily cruising for many years to come. I just love your videos!

I live 20 minutes from a cruise port. My wife and I have this crazy idea that we could pack our suitcases, drive over to the port, and check various departing cruises for no-shows, last-minute cancellations, etc., and pay some heavily-discounted fare to get onto any cruise that might be available. been on 6 since august of 21 freebies such as casino package or tax only cruises are great also i live near Chicago so flights out of there a very cheap but flexibility is key also like he said off season is great also check your emails check rates weekly get a inside unless u have to have a balcony also if you traveling with a partner get separate rooms as u may not both need the amenities such as internet alcohol package because they are charged as 2 if your your staying together so my last cruise my girl doesn't drink much so i got the drink package on my room and shared it she got the internet package on here room because she works from home i didn't need it and on Carnival and Norwegian you get the single supplement you are not charged as double occupancy so if you really need a balcony only 1 of you have to get it and just stay in there don't spend money on board when you go on shore the further you leave from the port the cheaper stuff gets and a few blocks makes a big difference diamonds international avoid all the chains you see avoid from normal cruising avoid get up a lil earlier and take a cab rides in the Bahamas to any were are less then 15 dollars they will try to hit you rides in mexico are less than 20 round trip and an extra 5 they will wait a little bit of research goes along way

We were just looking at our HAL’s site for a European cruise in July or August. We found some Private sale price of $250 CAD for a 10 day Copenhagen return cruise. Obstructed Verandah. Yes, you read that right: $250.00- cruise only. There was also a 10 day Barcelona to Venice cruise for the same $250.00. The Neptune suite was going for $2,200 CAD.. We had seen these special fares four or five months ago and thought they were a glitch. So there are deals out there…

GREAT video! Questions: - Airfares and cruise fares rise and fall on opposite schedules. Cruises tend to go down and last-minute fares can be bargains, but for air the opposite is true. Do you find that saving on last-minute deals is lost due to high airfare? - For price drops, do you find it hard or even impossible once you've made your final payment? - Have you tried any all-inclusive resorts or tours like Trafalgar instead of cruising? - I've heard that gamblers get amazing deals on Royal Caribbean through the casino loyalty program. Have you looked into that?

Sir Gary. You are blessed being in remission. I understand all to well as I am a 16 1/2 yr survivor. Flexibility with cruise lines and time of year. I too like to choose my own cabin. Yes. I receive the emails and promotions too. Booking far out or booking last minute for dropped prices to fill the ship. Reduced on board spending and excursions. Limited spa. Casino is a No for me. Amazing tips. Thanks so much and see you next video.

Thanks for this very personal and very helpful guidance Gary. We too save $$$'s by not drinking, minimal excursions and no gambling (understanding math & probability just ruins it).. Our treats: My wife buys a few T-shirts/hoodies and specialty coffes, and I truly appreciate the (lowest-priced) balcony. I can't imagine keeping up with the prices & deals of a half-dozen cruise lines, but prioritizing via a "Wish List" sounds like a great idea (e.g., I want a NY/Boston => Quebec/Montreal cruise). Finally, I can see why you were successful in advertising as your channel is filled with empathetic promotion and clear communication. Let's hope for many more good years for you & Mark!

Totally agree with the aspect of flexibility. We’d like to cruise (or simply vacation) more, but with 2 kids in school and a wife who teaches (teachers really only have 1 or 2 personal/vacation days per school year), so our only options are spring break, summer, Christmas/holiday break (i.e., when it’s busier and more expensive).

I'd say one tip to cruise more often is to live in a part of the world where cruising is more competitive. Though we Aussies do tend to love our cruises, we are a small market, with limited itineraries, and limited options of lines for those trips. Pricewise there isn't much difference between fares for the resort style lines, and even some premium lines can be close in pricing to those resort style lines. To take advantage of a more competitive market, such as the Caribbean for example, we'd need to consider an expensive airfare as well, which could make the difference between a suite and a balcony, for example, on a locally sailing cruise.

If I may, for poor solo cruisers like me: some line offer solo cabins, the anthem even has solo cabins with balconies, so you don’t pay double. Yes, having a balcony is alright, but I have done cruises in an inside cabin and just avoided being in it and it was great. My weakness is also the casino. I make a budget and don’t go over it, you can also set an amount of time there to avoid loosing too much.Also, for fellow Eastern Canadians, there is Cape Liberty, so you save on time and money compared to Florida.

Hubby decided on a cheaper cruise with Holland. One of those last minute types we didn't plan long before. The reason it was cheap was because the ship was being sent to refurbish it and it was on it's final trip. This turned out to mean the plumbing and who knows what else didn't work. I ended up bailing my bathroom one night. (I finally told the desk that I was going to stop and didn't care what flooded) Also the staff knew it was the last cruise before leaving and didn't give a hoot. So make sure to avoid this. No passengers got anything for inconvenience and I thought some guy complaining was funny because he didn't spend hours trying to get the water turned off in the middle of the night.

So sorry about your illness in 2012, best wishes for your continued freedom from that. I also had cancer in 2008 and have been week since, except for pain from the chemo and radiation. We don’t ever spend money in the casino, but my husband does buy a cruise long spa ass so that he can use the steam rooms. He loves them. Approx US$199 for a 2 week cruise. He can then use it as much as he likes. One needs to sign up on first day of cruise as they only sell so many passes. Did you ever try the Saunas or steam rooms? agree that the treatments are expensive, we do not use those. But hubby really loves the steam rooms.
