Lou -I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I am 72 yrs old a carpenter , engineer and builder for many years. Every pice of knowledge u give is from a professional with obvious years of experience. I am building “Joel White’s” “Catspaw” Everything I have read regarding steam bent frames states annular rings fore and aft I have (3) out of (24) that are oriented so. All (3) have checked noticeably, the rest are fine Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. The Engineer side of me actually agreed with the books on boatbuiding Now l know the the “real deal” Thanks Lou!!

I love the way you present your stuff, Louis. Not just the commentary, which is beautifully spoken and FULL of content, but the obvious love in the detail and attention to care.

Very cool stuff, I have watched hundreds of ship building & wood working vids and you are the only one that seems to truly understand the wood you work with. Of all the wood workers and ship builders I've read or watched you are the only one that even talks about medullary rays. Not saying that they aren't aware, just that the info isn't being passed on... although I'm not 100% sure the were aware!

I like your explanation of wood grain legendary raise and the absorption of water. when you did the bent laminated stem on the Herreshoff 12 1/2 which way do you run the medullary rays in each 1/4"? or is1/8"? lamination or does it matter.? As you say, there must be a right and wrong way to do that too. You are my new Guru. Thank You

Louis - really enjoyed this video, and am trying to figure out how the grain should be aligned on a tiller I am making. I figure that the load is from the side on a tiller, and am thinking that I should orient the grain as if I was building a frame laying down on its side? Could you help?

Fantastic. A master at work. Makes you wonder who the moron is that marked thumbs down. He/she/it seems to be traveling the boat channels recently. I guess it doesn't like people who know what they are doing and are willing to share. Please keep sharing Mr. Sauzedde!

Firstly, Louis you really are a master craftsman & teacher. But could you please clarify; when the annual rings should be atwarthship is this only needed for wood that is being steam bent, or should it always be done? this would likely mean for some framing that's not square we'd be using flat sawn lumber. Cheers

I am very big fan of Louis, as I am keeping and sailing a 1932 45m2 double ender, constructed by Georg Berg and built in Denmark. Now I am having troubles finding the video where he shows how he measures and replace floor timber. Could anyone please help me finding that video, that would make me real happy. :-)

but if you are say installing sawn frames - wouldnt you want the bottom frame members to be flat grained lumber - or in other words - the grain is standing vertically when installed? this would provide the most strength for compression forces?

Hi Louis, Do I hear you say that in a steambend frame the annual rings should be atwarthship? That means NOT flat sawn? I was tought that the frames should be sawn flat- and not quarter sawn in order steam bend better. I do enjoy your videos very much and use them with my students boatbuilding but here I am confused about what you just tell .... Best regards Bert van Baar bootbouwschool.nl

The only downside to quarter sawing your wood - you get so much less out of a given tree. But if you want it done right, you can't take shortcuts!
