Did you apply the scale to the object before doing the solidify step?
@joschisaurus1822 жыл бұрын
For some reason, even after applying the scale and doing this, my mushroom still expands when I change the thickness setting of the solidify modifier. In the transform tab under scale it says that it's set to 1.000 on every axis, but even when I lock them, the mushroom expands when I change the thickness. My current Blender version is 3.1.2, and I followed each of your steps 1:1.

@@mikecicciari845 Not sure if this will help you, but its saved me a lot of time: rig first, texture last. Other YTs you can also check out are Dikko for intermediate / advanced NPR & toon shading and Lightning Boy Studio for advanced toon shading. Each method is useful for different things, and most use the inverted hull (solidify mod) method for outlines, just keep in mind this doubles the polycount of your geometry.

Actually if you've downloaded the most recent version of Blender (3.0) you can paint on objects and it'll automatically apply to the UV map. Substance painter has a similar feature as well.

I'm personally interested in cel shading (freestyle render, just pure texturing, some touches with Grease Pencil, etc) in Blender. Doing artwork as a solo (lone wolf) creator for indie stuff, it does not make sense anymore (specially characters) with a realistic approach. Not these days of PBR materials and normal maps/sculpts. I can do it, have the technical knowledge (more or less), but the time needed is not worth it from the point of view of $$$/time ratio, the way the indy market is. So, imo it's all about illustration, cel shading animation & objects, and maybe pixel art projects, comic stuff, any of that all the way, those kind of projects, what I can really go for. Sure is different for other indies, though.

Hi Tip, is there any particular reason you are not using / (slash on numpad) for isolating objects that you want to work on specifically? 20:15 To prevent that you can also set a low thickness to the solidify modifier (ex: 0,001) then apply it. It will create a layer of vertices around your object, you can pull each one manually to have different outline thicknesses.

For some reason the at the border step, it would not work. As soon as I added the 2nd material and the solidify modifier, set the material offset, it became the boarder emission color even before flipping the normals. I checked and normals are the correct orientation initially and flipping as they should, but after enabling backface culling, nothing changed. I tried every possible combination of settings I i could think of, but the only way I got it to work was to apply the emission material to the object and then I swapped the order of the materials on the object. Now, I was using the same material on the cap and stem. I don't see why that would make a difference, but I did notice that on the cap, the thickness setting on the modifier had to go negative, and it ended up being positive on the stem. I totally get why this method works and it really seemed odd the way mine was behaving. I'm using 3.3. 0. Just posting here in case anyone else has this issue. It's quite possible I missed a step earlier on but I went over the border section a number of times and made sure I only did what was mentioned in the video. Regardless, thanks for this highly informative tutorial!

'Inverted hull' cell shading is the easiest way, but keep in mind that it can basically double your poly count. Nowadays rigs should handle it fine, just be carefull using it with some extreme complex scenes with a lot of polys. For static scenes you can use Freestyle or brand new Outline Grease Pencil modifier, those can be used in animations too but they add render time or need baking first.
