Living in th Northwest High Desert we usually get deep snow and those types of chains are good for sedans, but I and most other 4x4 drivers use the type that are installed like the semi-truck drivers use. They have the cross and the diagonal link system which gives the best of both worlds and tighten up very snug to the tire so that they provide the maximum advantage.
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
I run the same, those cheap cable and quick fit chains sound cool but when you drive a big heavy 4x4 truck those things won't last you a season. My chains also have v-bars which work great for ice and provide better lateral stability than standard ladder style chains and are a little bit more heavy duty than standard ladder chains but not by much. I carry chains but if I gotta put them on its time to stay home anyhow LOL.

I have the ladder chains, and they will hold up to our driving here in Montana. During hunting season we get into a lot of deep snow, with rocks. I like the way those go on, but we get years out of ours. By the way, you do not have to drive onto them to get them hooked up. We have the few times where we should have put them on sooner, and no issues unless we are against a bank. Then any chain would be a pain. Cool chains though.
@We_Are_Borg_4783 жыл бұрын
How do you get it on without driving over it?
@mtevilone3 жыл бұрын
@@We_Are_Borg_478 It is tough to do, but you just have to leave as much slack as you can near the ground, and hook what you can. Sometimes bailing wire helps for a temporary hook. Just long enough for the chain to rotate under the tire. If you work it enough, you can get the chains to just hook together.

That's the brand of chain I carry in my Ecksby. Used them only once to try them out. Ground clearance has always been the limiting factor with this car in the snow with Blizzaks.
@RufusT96 жыл бұрын
only downside with chains is when you take them off- the wheel needs to be in a position where you can easily unhook the chain and allow the cable to drop onto the ground behind the wheel without the chain getting snagged around brake pipes etc.. Not much fun in the dark! They've got me home a few times, though you do need to take them off as soon as you reach cleared tarmac which often presents a problem in busy traffic. I take gloves and a small tarp with me to throw on the ground so I don't get soaked or covered in mud.

Keeping two bungee cords criss crossed across hubcap per wheel will keep chains taught from sliding off if they don't go on as tight as they should, or loosen up. With ABS sensors, top speed is about 25mph with chains. Zee chains are pretty good but not that heavy duty. Some of the cable chains need tack welds to prevent them from flying apart.

@Teamoneilrally6 жыл бұрын
You'll probably be just fine with all-terrains unless it gets really bad. One really easy trick is to throw a couple bags of sand in the back... It's good weight to have back there for stability AND if you get stuck somewhere you can throw some under/in front of the tires to get going again. Coarse landscaping sand works better than fine playground sand, in the plastic bag so it doesn't get wet and freeze into a block. You might use it to help somebody else out, it's just nice to have. Spread it on icy steps. It never seems to go to waste.

I used to carry a couple of 50 lb bags of course turkey grit. It is granite flakes/chips and works great on packed snow or ice to get a semi moving. It's like $5-10 for a 50 lb bag at a feed mill or an ag store.

This is due to clearance issues that may occur due to tire/wheel combinations or just plain no clearance problems encountered with many of today's vehicles with wheels that are sized way too large from the factory and when turned at full lock right or left will cause a set of chains to make contact with suspension components, brake components, sensor wires, etc. which is why they do not recommend chaining up the front wheels...its not that you can't, because you can, you just have to be extremely careful and most times you would be limited to a set of cable chains due to the clearance issues that would prevent you from being able to fit a standard set of chains.

@Teamoneilrally5 жыл бұрын
Definitely!
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
Just gotta make sure you have plenty of clearance for them, one loose chain and you can tear body panels up, cut brake lines, wheel speed sensor wires, etc. That's why they recommend to run the cable & low profile type chains on cars, and many of today's crossovers and SUV's because they've got those ridiculous over-sized wheels and hardly any clearance. If you run regular chains take extra caution and add extra tensioners to the chains to keep them tight, and pay attention to noises and vibrations which will give you a sign that a chain is coming loose or hitting something.

It get around with the rear tires chained up (traction wise) but I wonder if the ride could benefit from chains on the front (non powered) wheels in therms of handling...
@daltonbrink99243 жыл бұрын
As long as you have clearance, you should be alright. However, if your steering box is outside the frame rail, you only want to chain up the passenger side steer tire. That way if you break a side chain, it doesn't take out your steering box.

Brakes also on the back??? The ass end will slide out while the front is not and make driving more unstable? In any situation 4 chains is better.
@wildbill23c5 жыл бұрын
Any axle without chains is along for a free uncontrollable ride. So you chain up the front wheels on your front wheel drive car, but not the rear wheels because as many people's mindset leads them to believe they don't have to because those back wheels aren't getting any power, so why waste the money. So the first time you hit the brakes and your back end tries to pass the front you'll very quickly realize why chaining up all 4 wheels is a very good idea...its like buying only 2 snow tires, same problem the axle/tires with less traction is going to want to try and pass you up as you stop, turn, etc.
