I used to use a machine like this, and then came in to work one day and our boss bought the most badass tire changing and balancing equipment I had ever seen...and it became the easiest thing ever, it was heaven using that machine compared to your typical setup. We used to get some pretty oddball tire sizes in, and used to use a lot of carb cleaner to inflate those buggers to seat on the bead...our massive compressor setup just couldn't cut it. The new machine did 35 series tires like nothing...I bet that whole setup must have been in the 50,000 range. And a toddler could change and balance tires on it. Oh...the reason we got the new machine...I kept saying not to take on low profile tires because if they are on aluminum / mag / painted wheels, they are going to get scratched...and people will care. So he says do it anyway, and I scratched a 17" OEM Suburu wheel and the owner wanted it replaced right away...and it wasn't cheap...so he eventually bought the new setup and said something along the lines of, "I don't think we'll be turning away any one for tires now!" and walked away like he didn't just drop a fortune over a scratched rim lol

You can spin the wheel alone without a tire on the ballancer and mark the heavy spot, sometimes its not where the valve stem hole is. Once you mark it it will not change for the life of the wheel unless it gets damaged. Preferably use metal valve stems for track duty.
@deegan4637 жыл бұрын
Damn right!
@RyMann887 жыл бұрын
That'll depend. Metal/Aluminum stems (officially called Clamp In Stems) can heat up with the wheel and the hex nut can work itself loose. That's not even taking potential corrosion into consideration. I always push the rubber stems as much as I can at work. At the convenience of the customer as well as myself. Granted, I'll still do whatever the customer wants.

high quality tires spin relatively true, (especially preformace tires) and high quality rims (typically alloys) also spin really true. the yellow dot is the light spot, and when they drill the hole for the valve on the rim, its the heavy spot. so together they CAN even out fairly often.

Andrew if the wheel assembly has only a static imbalance, weight placement doesn't matter (inside or outside), however when an assembly has a "couple" imbalance you should place the weight as close to the edge as possible.
@3lbtrigger7 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of balancing is performed. Static or dynamic. Some shop's might only have a machine that is capable of a static balance where weights get put only on one edge. Other's will have a machine that can do both. Dynamic balance gets weights on both edges (if required)
@IkarosCanFly7 жыл бұрын
I used to be a tire tech. We had a balancing machine that made you measure the size, width, and offset of the rim and plug the numbers into the machine. The machine would then spin the wheel and find where it was off balance. Then when it stopped it had a display with two lines and a 2D pic of a rim. You rotated the wheel until the line stopped blinking and which ever side the line was on the screen would be the side of the rim you installed it on and it also let you know how much weight was needed. Weights go by quarter ounces. A lot of techs I knew wouldn't bother to balance out a wheel that was .25 of an ounce off. A good rim could be balanced with only 2 weights. A bent rim or really heavy rims (large truck rims) would require 4 weights. If you ever had to use more than 2 weights on a good rim then you would remount the wheel to the machine and re balance it. If you just got your wheels balanced and it has more than 2 weights then either your rim was bent or they balanced it wrong. Most techs do not double check their work because time is money. Also this guy in the vid did a horrible job.

Basic tire installation principles need to be taught to everyone. Even this one also need to learn it again. There is a reason why rims have a deeper inner groove and they are only on one side of the wheels, some outer and some inner. This must be understood. Lube and accessories makes low profile tires demount and install much easier without wheel damage.

No where near enough lube fitting the new tire and none at all removing the used one??? After breaking the beads down, ALWAYS get some lube onto the beads before demounting the tire. Firstly that will allow you to easily remove your lever and secondly, the tyre will be undamaged. If you're checking the tire or repairing a leak/puncture, how the hell are you going to refit the tire if you've damaged the customer's bead? And always have the tire balance checked after 500 miles or so. It can change as they settle in.

Using a non-water bases lube helps a lot. Using too much lube will cause the tire to move on the wheel. I've experienced that doing a set of low profiles on a Yukon. As for the dots on the tires, you can't rely on the fact that that mark is for balancing. Different tire manufacturers use different colors and placements for a variety of reasons (stock, batches, etc.) So it's not entirely reliable. I love those machines though, super quick when you know how to use them. I've done run flats no problem all the way to cube van dually tires on the same machine. Thanks for the video.
@DavidFerree543 жыл бұрын
If you came here like me to find out what the yellow circle is (since that’s the title of the video), the barely decipherable answer starts at 2:45. A more detailed answer: While it won’t be a perfect centrifugal force match, the tire manufacturers make one side of a tire slightly lighter than the other to make up for the weight of the valve stem. A valve stem may only weigh a few ounces but at highway speeds it’s centrifugal force will be several pounds. Matching the intentionally light side of the tire to where the valve stem is reduces the chance of needing a corrective balance weight, or at least reduces the amount needed.

Typical for a TBA mechanic (tires, brakes and alignment), ripping out part of the bead. I wonder what the percentage is of cars where he finds one bad tie rod end, that he finds the other rod end is bad too! And how many of those were bad under 50,000 miles! Also not surprised to hear him mis-naming the purpose of the dot on the tire. The dot goes way back to the 50's and the dot is the LOW SPOT on the tire. You can actually ignore it on cast aluminum wheels today because there is no high spot on those rims. But all steel rims are required by law to be measured for the high spot and then drilled for the valve stem to indicate the high spot on the rim. As it was explained to me at the General Motors Training Center in Atlanta back in the 90's, this system was D.O.T. required back in the days before radial tires when bias and bias ply tires were the norm. When those tires had too much runout, over .080", tramping would become obvious and no amount of balancing could eliminate it; it happens around 60 mph with 14 and 15 inch rims. Tire shops were fixing it by grinding off tread and consumers suffered so the D.O.T. made it law. It's less obvious with radial tire design, but the TBA business learned that matching the dot with the valve did benefit them by requiring less weights to be used, hence the misconception that it is there to show the "light spot" on the tire. Yes, the low spot is almost always the light spot, but the manufacturer has no way of finding out the light spot, but it does know where the low spot is and that's where the dot goes.

one of the first things i learned when i mounted my first tire. i like mounting the tires with a large sidewall and challenging myself to do both beads by spinning the tire by hand and not turning the rim. if the beads are lined up well enough it slips right on. since i don't work in a shop anymore i find a friend where i can mount my own tires, i don't want a goon scratching the wheels up or tearing up my tires.
@253sam7 жыл бұрын
try doing this on a 26inch wheel with 30 series tires.. you cannot fuck up. I've learned this the hard way when I was high school working at a mom/pop auto shop. when that tire goes in for repairs, you'll see the tire/bead separation. I've seen this quite often and it sucks because the customer does not feel comfortable driving on it and end up buying a new tire.

Two things, when breaking the bead take the back [wide side] off first. And with low profile garbage is is important. Lubing the bead when removing tyres helps as well. I was watching the rim spinning in those nylon grips when removing the front side . Putting weights on new rims it is best to use prepsol [oil and wax cleaner] so the weights stick. Old dirty rims I use 80 grit sandpaper. And people NEVER buy rims that are reverse fit, meaning the tyre is wound on the back of the rim. Absolute mongrels to fit, are always very heavy and very easy to scratch the front of the rim as it moves on the grips as that first 19" did.
@CB-tx3ul6 жыл бұрын
This is saddening. I'm no professional but I do happen to do this for a living. Different machines require different procedures, but that air cylinder mashing the tire down most certainly damaged it, as it was pushed down MUCH too far, those tires can be pushed down by hand without tearing the bead or the cords up. And that AMG wheel/tire grabbing is why you lubricate your machine head.

I have used soap, dish washing liquid, car wash, even mechanics hand wash with all the grit in it and stuff. Some times it dries out and you have to keep lubing it up but the key is to keep it nice and lubed up. Throw anything that is going to hang around and not dry out after a while and not dry out is a bad idea. Engine oil is a perfect example here. Baby oil, eeeh don’t know. Maybe not.

Lets not forget that the tyres have a date of manufacture on them as well ,which is to say that you should always ask for the month and year of when the yers are made before putting them on, that way you have new tyres as you requested instead of tyres which look new but are really two years old when they were made, also as far as the yellow dot its for the tyre pressure tube to be lined up when putting the tyre on the rim also the balancing weights if stuck on mag wheels must also be mounted on the inside of the rim in the right spot as directed by the wheel balancing machine .:)

@burrowssj7 жыл бұрын
no ear protection either lol, compressed air can be dangerous, although in all honesty I think that's mad overkill for glasses and ear protection, like the chances of needing it are 1/10000000, unless you're untrained or just careless you shouldn't need anything. I barely used to wear anything when I did it, but gloves are a must for me. Silicone munts your hands quickly

i made tyres at dunlops for 20 years i would say you cant change youre own without corect machinery ESPCISLY THE SOAP ON RIMS
@simoncarter59516 жыл бұрын
Sam Burrows In my experience these last about a week before they are recked and half falling off and you need a new one. Then you need to do some Steele’s and it gets the ass and it makes it so much easier to use

He did a good job with that machine but with these machines i have had my rims scratched badly from that arm that holds the rim of the tire at three different shops, you need to look for a shop that has reverse mounting machine (if you have expensive wheels) which doesn't even touch the outside of the wheel (machine holds the wheel from the inside). I'm surprised they didn't mention that, i learned my lesson the hard way.

Still scrathces the inside, sometimes it'll drag on the inside.

010FSL101 or you can just place the wheel upside down and clamp it normally? Lol 😂 I don’t understand
@BuyTheBookLotto6 жыл бұрын
010FSL101 *fact that machine he is using can do every kind of wheel you just need to know how to and the movements. These changers are the ones discount tire uses they are pretty much the best
@Houdinii12127 жыл бұрын
the head on that tire machine that your pry against that lifts the tire off. whats the difference between the red and black ones? yalls is black our shop uses red but they seam to get realy flexible and stop working after a wile.

Actually yes, certain stickers do affect balancing. I've shown my guys the proof. It's not a whole lot of weight but it's there. If you were using a coats balancer and changed the settings to be more sensitive, instead of rounding up, you'll see the difference.

Jordan Mitchell EXACTLY! you put as much as you can so you don't fuck up that bead like this guy did
@Hunter-ku6ku7 жыл бұрын
always lube especially taking it off..... the "when it gets stuck just keep backing up and going forward till it goes" is how you eventually tear a bead. if he lubed it it wouldn't have bound up and would have slid nice

That works sometimes if you know where the heavy spot in the wheel is the balancer can help you out figure that out the dots are not always correct
@jasonmorehouse37566 жыл бұрын
dots are marked by a computer analysis indicating the heaviest spot, and peak radial runout. they aren't wrong

Actually scuffing will allow water and dirt to work under the weight... so on NEW wheels simply super clean the under surface of the wheel with pure Naphtha.. then allow it to fully evaporate before applying the weight ... works way better and the weight will never come off!
@simoncarter59516 жыл бұрын
MyEyesBled Unless the brake caliber or ball joint is so close to the rim that it rips them off in the first five feet. I can’t be leave how few tyre fitters never check this. If you have got a good balancer it will recalculate the weight for a position further towards the centre

double sided tape does not require surface roughness. It needs surface to be absolutely oil free. Use silicone remover and alcohol. Also brake cleaner works.

@matttutell79803 жыл бұрын
The dots are for inspection, now a lot of tire manufacturers have gone to a symbol that abbreviates inspection. All Tire balancers worth anything now can read the run out of the tire and rim. If your regular shop does not have this time to find a regular new shop. Its just the facts.

HI why some people say the the red dot goes right next to the valve, When this guy said the yellow dot goes next to the valve?

Doing that without the machine is the worst thing imaginable....its a lot of work on the machine but I'm happy the machine does the biggest parts 😆 if only they weren't so damn expensive!

yellow dot is the light spot, red dots on tires should indicate the heavy spot

What if the yellow and red dots aren't across each other? Like, they're next to each other, 12 and 3, etc?

What do you do when the tire beads are only 2 in apart and the rim is 6 in? impossible to mount
@Popgunner1017 жыл бұрын
Most balancers will read zeros on the second spin if the balance is anywhere close. Better to spin a third time to get an actual reading that may be only a half ounce but it's worth doing to get it right.
