The disappearance of chrome bumpers or bumpers in general could be a good one

Good video. From having worked for Yokohama as an engineer I can add a few odd details. The white walls on modern tires are completely for show. The reason carbon is added is because it makes the tire much tougher so when you see a white wall tire, it's actually just an extra ply over the black ply underneath because a white wall isn't rated for strength in a modern tire. Also when WWII happened, it's true that most rubber plantations were in places like Japanese occupied Indonesia and South East Asia, but we did have plantations in Africa that were cut off by German subs in the Atlantic. The US government forced all the major tire manufacturers to invent synthetic rubber. They tried lots of different derivatives of seeds at first and then realized petroleum was good base. Synthetic rubber naturally breaks down much more quickly than natural rubber though and during WWII lots of our Jeeps had 100% synthetic tires that would degrade within a few years, but the War Department determined that most Jeeps wouldn't last that long anyway. After WWII synthetics were added to tires to make them cheaper (since natural rubber is very expensive) and today most tires are roughly 95% synthetic and 5% natural rubber which is a good balance of cheapness vs longevity. Our official number was 7 years for how long a tire should last before it should be replaced due to dry rotting. Also since tires are rubber they actually have a lot of holes on a microscopic scale so they naturally leak air and the recommended interval to check and fill your tires is once a month for optimum tread wear and tire life. During WWII when rubber was rationed, police carried pressure gages and would pull people over if they suspected your tires were low and companies employed people whose jobs were to use magnets to sweep parking lots for nails or debris that could possibly give someone a flat.
