In southern Ontario, we refer to them as "over the cab campers". This is the name I always knew them by. My childhood friend's father built his own custom camper for the box of his pick up truck, In the summer months he would hitch up their little 17' aluminum boat with a 20hp outboard motor and head on up north to do some serious fishing in one of the many lakes to be found all over the province of Ontario, and also further north in the province of Quebec. There are literally thousands of small lakes to choose from, thus, the fishing is always excellent in most areas on or off the beaten track!

Australia we call then slide on campers. I’ve always wanted one ever since I was a kid, now I just retired, it’s a hard decision to make between that or a caravan. Some say caravans are easier to unhook and drive around to see the tourists attractions. It is a beautiful unit , but I just can’t decide.
@VanlifewithAlan4 жыл бұрын
Caravans are easier to unhook but I think that there 4x4 performance will be a lot weaker. As you are in Australia, I think off roading must be a major consideration - it would be for me if I were living there!
@Layingflat4 жыл бұрын
Alan Heath I’ve heard a few story come out of a road house in the outback we’re people drive them on gravel road at speed and the bend the frame of the pickup. They end up staying at the road house for a few days until they get the pickup chassis welded up. With the weight up high it must be a hell of a G force on the chassis rails.i would like to see an engineers calculation.
@VanlifewithAlan4 жыл бұрын
@@Layingflat I think you would need to speak to a manufacturer about that Paul.
@dereksuddreth86724 жыл бұрын
We call them "Slide-in Campers" in the US, even though you actually back under them. Truck bed camper shells are also popular here (lighter and much less expensive). Camper shells are basic and designed to keep you dry and off the ground. Because "Shells" are not as easily removed (requires 2 persons to lift/mount with c-clamps and weather stripping) most are left on the truck as an extra large lockable storage space. You can add accessories as you need them, and it is an economical way of camping as compared to self-contained units.

If the pod is welded to the body, what would be the benefit of it? You can't access the driving cab from the living quarters. I would just get a nice 5.5m van motorhome
@VanlifewithAlan6 жыл бұрын
Good point - horses for courses - whatever suits you!
@yashashdave1236 жыл бұрын
Seanpaulnz01 it's basically for people who are looking to camp deep in the nature and not park at camp sites. Also the biggest features it has is it can detach itself from the truck giving you payload and freedom to leave your camper as a base camp. Just imagine you would need to take that 5.5 van everywhere. Basically as Alan said what works for you is good. But I'd like to see a hybrid of class b / c and truck campers. Theyd be ultimate.
@thomastuite91746 жыл бұрын
This one isn't welded to the body, so it's obviously more versatile. One of Alan's other videos is of the Oman which is, and in that one you can access the cab through the bed. But in either case, you are driving a powerful 4x4, not a motorhome. Big difference!

Straight across the board, the European and UK Rangers, Isuzu D series, VW and other trucks have considerably higher payloads. The same Ranger in the UK as the one in N. America, has an average of about 1000 lbs. higher payload (2600 lbs.!!!!). The diesel engines, brakes, and suspensions are designed to haul more, due to the lack of full-sized pickups in the market. These campers would be useless in the States and Canada, as we simply don't have the trucks here to carry them. Shame.
