What was lost at the destruction of the stone temple was a misplaced worship of God's home rather than God Himself. Most of Israel were too dumb to see that the stone temple was just a prophetic picture of the heart of man (Isaiah 57:15)

Scripture indicates the temple was destroyed on the 7th day (2 Kings 25:8) or the 10th day (Jeremiah 52:12).....I wonder where we get the 9th day from.

Chaza"l say that, the Babylonians entered the Temple on the 7th and took two whole days to remove all the Gold and Silver implements, coins, and ornaments and to strip the walls of all the precious jewels and choice marbles. The Fire was lit on the 9th of Av, and for both Temples, the Temple burned to the ground all night on the tenth of Av when the fires stopped around Noon from lack of more cedar wood.

@@dovbarleib3256If it's not written in scripture, we can't assume it occurred this way.

@@DERDM You cannot assume. But the Jews have oral traditions and oral transmissions passed on through the generations going back to Sinai and even going back to Abraham. Some of these oral transmissions were written down 1500 yrs ago lest they be lost. If you choose not to rely on those oral traditions, that is your decision.

Destruction on the Ninth of Av The Tanakh reports events that were part of the destruction of the Temple taking place on the seventh and tenth of Av, but not on the ninth. In this excerpt from the Talmud, the rabbis explain exactly what happened on the ninth of Av that makes it worth commemorating as the date of destruction. And on the ninth, adjacent to nightfall, they set fire to it, and it continuously burned the entire day, as it is stated: “Woe unto us, for the day has declined, for the shadows of the evening are stretched out” (Jeremiah 4:6). This verse is interpreted as a prophecy about the evening when the Temple was burned. And this is what Rabbi Yoḥanan meant when he said: Had I been alive in that generation, I would have established the fast only on the tenth of Av because most of the Sanctuary was burned on that day… (Source from Sefaria - Tisha b'Av)
