TISSINGTON HALL - a unique English country house - tour with Sir Richard Fitzherbert

Tissington Hall was built during the reign of King James I and is situated within the privately owned village of Tissington in Derbyshire's Peak District. The Fitzherbert family acquired the Tissington estate through marriage in 1465, with the original old moated manor house being situated next to the Norman church. This manor house was replaced in 1609 by Francis Fitzherbert with the stunning Jacobean hall that we can see today. The village is also home to the ancient custom of well dressing, and Tissington's dressed wells are always spectacular!

I want to own a village! It's a foreign concept to me that an individual could own a village or town based solely on lineage. We have mayors here, but they don't own anything except their own home. I would be at the local pub alot. In fact, that would be my center of operations.

Agreed! Although there isn't a pub in the village, the nearest one is about a mile away! There are a few privately owned villages in the UK. Near to Tissington are Pilsley and Edensor, and those villages are mostly owned by the Duke of Devonshire as part of the Chatsworth House estate.
