In this video, Carnegie Mellon's Dr. Alan Russell discusses tissue engineering with a particular focus on the repair and replacement of tissues and organs. He begins by describing the clinical importance of restoring the form and function of damaged or diseased tissues, then discusses multiple strategies for accomplishing this repair. Next, Dr. Russell provides a wide overview of current research on stem cells and organ replacement, including the method of decellularizing an organ down to its extracellular matrix and reseeding it with the recipient's own cells. Dr. Russell also goes into considerable detail regarding the importance of the extracellular matrix in healing and provides great insight into the disruptive nature of regenerative medicine.
