Your stitch length lever is numbered as stitches per inch, unscrew the round knob To be able to fully lengthen your stitches. Broken thread usually means wrong size and kind of needle and wrong tension adjustment. Also for thicker fabrics loosen the presser foot pressure with the knob on top. Oiling is absolutely necessary to keep these machines working sweetly. I've made terrycloth robes on my Spartan. Have fun, these vintage Singers are wonderful machines (I collect and use them), my oldest is almost 100 years old (a 1923 hand crank Singer 99) and still stitching beautifully.

IMO, better than a featherweight anyday. Heavier, better drop in bobbin 66 class, and a .80A motor!

Yes, can confirm too to unscrew the stitch length knop and also screw back tight at your wished stitch length ( is usually to do). Also the info to loosen up the pressure foot pressure on top straight up over the foot on top of your machine. The lightening bold look usually comes from when the tension is not leveled out properly. Make yourself familiar about how to adjust also the Bobin case tension, which also needs adjustment and accordingly to the thick- or thinness of threads and/or it's slippyness. And that in fact is true also for drop in bobbin cases. If one never seems to get the tension done properly, don't waste money on a service. Adjust and try different ones. Also it is astonishing that the machine picked up the bobbin thread at all through the spandex, as usually one needs a special needle for that. The spandex would/could then also be an explanation for the lightn bolt stitch, as proven , when you put something stable, the paper, underneath, so the spandex could not be distorted easily anymore. Great, strong machine you have there. Something else, maybe there also with the adjustment of the pressure foot pressure it may need a transport dogs height adjustment or a replacement. Check if they are accordingly as they need to be. If you are quite handy you can find plenty of (not always easy) to find videos here from machine technician even themselves, or people who do that already for years as a hobby. I hope you found something useful and are enjoying it a lot. A lot of fun wishes to you 😊

Turn it to a longer stitch length & it will sew through the 3 layers.

Exactly! That stitch length is too short for that fabric.

Try reducing the presser foot pressure by turning the dial on top.

Thank you to the current owners of the Spartan who wrote in with their tips. I own a Specialty sewing machine with the tension knob that falls out completely on the table. I just pick it up and put it back in. It still sews like a charm. I just cannot adjust the tension.

Watch some videos on how to run this machine. It’s all to simple. That stitch length lever will go all the way down all you do is unscrew it a touch. It’s set to return to your set stitch length after using reverse

This Spartan is a great machine, it just needs to be oiled and possibly the tension cleaned and adjusted, put in a new needle.

I'm not sure how that thread is wound on the spool that you're using but these older machines don't work well with crosswound spools of thread. In that case I use a stand alone spool holder so that it can pull it up from the top. I know this is an older video so maybe you've already learned to use her. I've got quite a few vintage machines as well as a computerized Babylock, but I love how the vintage ones sound and their stitch quality is top notch!

I watched you trying to sew the terrycloth layers and see that you stopped the stitch length at 0, which means the feed dogs are not moving at all. Use a longer stitch length by turning the knob counterclockwise and then lowering it for thicker fabrics, loosen the tension a little, and go at a moderate speed! This machine can handle thicker stuff easily, when adjusted properly.

Unscrew the stitch length knob to be able to lengthen the stitch as on most Singers
