Titan is a natural cavern near Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District, and is the deepest shaft of any known cave in Britain, at 141.5 metres (464ft), As a result anyone entering must be fit, competent with all aspects of rope work and have experience of big pitches, The existence of Titan was revealed in November 2006.
Titan enters the Peak system on the upstream side of Far Sump and consequently allows relatively easy access to the bottom of JH and the upstream section of Speedwell, Both Peak and Speedwell Caverns have their entrance series as Show Caves.
The cave itself has been created by water eroding Limestome over millions of years and also contains a massive waterfall that flows deep below ground level.
This was a 'Peak Caving Club' organised trip in which we did a TITAN to Peak Cavern thru trip via Colostomy crawl a truly sporting trip not to be underestimated.

Stunning film quality. I noticed the Petzl stop is still used. I don’t feel so old now. 😊 I’m probably still fit enough to do that trip and torn between being jealous and glad I’m on my sofa watching others struggle. I caved for around 15 years continuously from 1981 and loved it. Eventually there were only two of us doing it and I can remember on a very long arduous crawl with two heavily loaded tackle bags making the decision to quit. It’s a brilliant sport, but like all sports there are times when you have to weigh up the pleasure Vs purgatory factor and for me it became too loaded on the wrong side. Great to watch this and the see the Titan in its full glory. Cheers.

Yes, the stops are still going strong, I've found there's a lot of people who used to cave but no longer do it because of the physical factor or life changes. Places like TITAN seemingly go unnoticed through time by the vast majority of people apart from the niche caving community. I try to give places like this the recognition they deserve, although given the conditions this can sometimes be challenging.

@@locationunknownUKTonight I was talking to a young guy who weight trains in the same gym as I do. He’s fascinated by caves but hasn’t yet sought out a club. I jokingly offered to introduce him to the sport at valley entrance or, Alum Pot long churn; then started to consider what I’d have to buy if I was to take him down either of the first pitches, or if I was up to the task ? Gulp. Like riding a bike I reasoned.

@@nockianlifter661 my first caving trip which involved pitches i was belayed down an electron and as much as i hate the danm things there cost effective for situations like that, why not try a shorter easier trip with him? if Yorkshires your local/closest caving area you've got an abundance to choose from

@@locationunknownUK I did Bar-pot on electron ladders. I didn’t have the energy to climb the big pitch back out, but luckily the winch meet was on and I took the elevator. Valley Entrance is short, wet and varied with a single pitch of 25’ or so into the stream way, then it’s all crawls and wading for as long as the knees will endure it. VE is a popular trip for beginners, as is Alum long churn - I would omit the pitch to the bridge traverse on that one. There’s a few much easier caves, but they don’t really give the sense of sporting caving-might as well do a show cave.

I live and work in the area and while I knew there were extensive caves in the Peak, I had no idea of the scale of this place! You guys are a lot braver than I am, I'd probably get my big arse stuck in those gaps!

Beg to differ. There is enough Karst extent to hide deeper if not longer caves. What the UK lacks is enough digging of obstructed links to unknown extent. And tricks like thermal imagery to locate invisible out-gassing of an abyss.

Ha ha how unlucky for the GoPro to play up on the 2nd "big" pitch! I'd completely forgotten how tight that squeeze section through Titan boulder pile was. You managed to film colostomy fine though. Huge respect, no idea how you managed to get such good footage in a very camera-unfriendly place. Lots of people will have no idea how much you didn't show and the filming is a small fraction of a much larger adventure. You didn't mention the bad smell of that sump/duck called "cows' arse worms" between Titan and Leviathan (09:00 or something). Thanks for posting, greatly enjoyed

Yeah quite unlucky but another excuse to head back there 😁, I think I cut that bit out as the camera was covered in literal crap. I generally try and just keep the highlights of the trip but yes a lot of footage was left out

Right just hear me out... Because of the naming of this place... TITAN, COLOSTOMY, ARSE... I believe that you were climbing and crawling through an Ancient Petrified Giant's Body 😳 OR Petrified Giant Tree... Research both and if you look hard enough you'll see it won't sound as crazy as you think. 👍
