Your burning plug cutter means that it is overheating and that will dull it very very quickly. Try slower or slowest speed, like you should with forstner bits too, and see if it helps. Pull off often to clear chips. If it smokes stop and let the plug cutter cool. A damp rag can help cool it. And if you can't use those plug cutters without them burning, then maybe they are not good quality or not sharp enough and you should look for some others of higher quality.

Great Tip! They were pretty cheap plug cutters so suspect that had much to do with it. I’ll invest in some better quality ones and try lowering the speed. Thanks! 😎

I've had one of these from screw fix for around 14 year's or so, drilling everything from metal, stainless steel, acrylics, .... Never let me down ever.. excellent condition still... Dirty and worn off course, but work still, EASY speed changes .... I'd recommend this product... Thom in Scotland.

Another tip to stop larger bits/hole saws smoking and over heating (apart from using a slower speed) is to drill all the way through with a smaller drill first in a a series of holes in the waste piece - the larger the diameter hole saw the more holes required (obviously don’t do this if it’s a blind hole!) this method helps the dust clear and reduces overheating and dulling of the hole saw. Also dust extraction can help - so stop hoover dust and then continue.

Hi, thanks for the video. Is the clamp that attaches the adjustable table to the column metal or plastic please. I'm thinking of getting one but concerned about there being movement if the clamp is plastic. TIA

It's made of metal, doesn't move from my experience.

Great video. Has it stood the test of time? I'm looking for a drill press but my titan nail gun packed up after about 2 uses and am wary of buying titan again

Thanks. Note it's not ALL metal since the guard looks the same as on my Lidl, made of thin plastic which has split on mine. Glued back together. To replace you have to remove mandrel which I did by slipping some small straight mole grips and hit them down. Guard back on, screwed the tensioner at the back ...And it's splitting again, so it's also bad design; would be good if it were metal. May screw a thin plate on it. Or just drop it altogether since I use a face guard anyway.

Yeah there’s no doubt that buying second hand tools provides much better value. Don’t let these video fool you, I’m often bargain hunting at carboots 😂

Are you in the US ? It’s not just that the sun is shining, it’s just that you can’t do much without first going ahead. This is an American tic that I can’t really get away with in a Brit. I bet I’m not alone.

I’m in the UK, try to film when the sun is out 😎 I’ve been made away of my habit of saying that, you’ll see less of it in my latest videos. I didn’t even know I did that! Too much time on YT I guess

@@sumeraybuilds Good for you, I thought you might throw all the toys out the pram. Of course, if you want to make it big in the States you’ll have to stick with it, those lot won’t lift a finger until they get the go ahead.

You should try car boots, you will get a far better quality drill press at a lower price, the pressed steel plate on that is just cheap as F, also I bet the drill has really poor run off for that price.

I am mad on carboots, I try to go as often as I can when the weather is good. I got a pretty decent bandsaw a while back for £25. Generally speaking I wouldn’t buy tools this cheap, but I don’t plan on using it often and needed in a rush at the time. Good tip!

@@sumeraybuilds Its surprising what you can find, even bought Fluke 87V's for £20 on the carboot working fine, milwaukee fuel m18 tools cheap. I find a lot of the top quality old gear to be far better constructed then the new tools out now, they were not designed to a cost back in the day, just to work and last! Seen lots of snap-on tools too.

Totally agree, I got my hands on a pretty decent bandsaw a few months ago for £25. Carboots and Facebook marketplace (if you can handle the time wasters) are deffo the best places to start your tool collection when you first start out. I'm currently working on episode 5 of my One Penny to £1000 series, and pretty early on I only had £15 available. It was pretty glorious to see just how many tools I managed to get going to a carboot!
