Continues to rope you in. A massive character study to an unforgettable lesson. We are not allowed to get TOO familiar with any characters beyond introduction for obvious reasons. Lightoller being the exception. The 97' remake fails to do this and consequently becomes a soap opera with a tragedy placed as its backdrop. This however moves like a stopwatch. Continually forward and doesn't let you escape into the charming era that ended 6yrs later.

I remember reading that when making this movie, Kenneth More, who played 2nd Officer Charles Hightoller, said Titanic survivors visited the set. At one point, when filming there was the sound of wood creaking. Some survivors remembered that sound from when the ship started rising before the fatal plunge. They ended up keeping the sound in the movie.

There were 3 movies made about the sinking. Others have been made where the incident plays and instrumental role in their stories or the demise in them. In 1953 they made a version with Barbara Stanywick and Clifton Webb. Then this one in 1958 based on a best selling book at the time by Walter Lord. And of course the 1997 blockbuster. I agree. This one is far superior in its simplicity.

I don't think so. That version was similar to the 97' version just much less lackluster and story. I believe they used footage of the boat sinking from that in this version. I could be mistaken. But Babs was so damn beautiful all is forgiven. (I read that she became so overcome shooting the scene at the lifeboat lowering that she had to stop performing. It dawned on her at THAT moment what had transpired 40yrs earlier).

Thanks Scottie for sharing this original version and the colourised version they are both great. This film is the truest and most accurate film of the Titanic tragedy. The Cameron version although good for the modern day audience is basically a romance story aboard the Titanic when the ship sank after hitting the iceberg that led to the sinking of the ship.

@infonut11 күн бұрын
I was told that one of those funnels was fake. A ship was referred to by its stacks. 3 stacker. 4 stacker. The more smoke stacks, the greater the prestige. The fact that engines got better and required less stacks meant nothing to them so they added an extra stack but it was not attached to any coal burning device. I could be wrong as that was 40yrs ago.
