The physical Darkseids you see in comics, movies and tv are just avatars through which his true consciousness (the aforementioned noncorporeal god) works his will. Like Whiz said, Darkseid's own presence within any universe other than his own would destroy everything, so he has to use artificial bodies just to safely interact with the rest of the multiverse he seeks to conquer.

As much as I love Thanos as a character in the MCU, Darkseid is a whole other breed of OP and is just as much of an interesting and petrifying threat to life itself. While Thanos has the powers of a god using the Gauntlet, Darksied was born a god, and it is the literal embodiment of tyranny, fascism and pure evil.
