Sad that we need a video debunking this. We have photographs taken by Robert John Welch in March 1912 showing several state rooms on B Deck designed specially for Titanic. We also have photographs by Welch of the private promenades for the suites also on B Deck that were not on the Olympic. Differences between RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic. Boat Deck. - The forward wall for the wheelhouse was straight on the Titanic (Curved wall on the Olympic). - Bridge wings extended over the side of the superstructure on Titanic which allowed for crew to see past the lifeboats looking aft. (Not added to Olympic until after Titanic sank). - Bulwarks on the Titanic were made of steel. (Made of wood on Olympic). - The wireless room was located amidst ship on the Titanic, while the room on Olympic was located on the port side of the Officers Quarters (this was changed after Titanic sank). - In the spot where the wireless room was on the Olympic, the Titanic had two cabins added on port and three on the starboard side. The three aft end officers cabins on the starboard side were moved to different locations in the officers quarters. - The gate that separated the 1st Class Promenade from the Officer's Promenade was moved further forward and was located between Lifeboats 3 and 5 on the starboard side and Lifeboats 4 and 6 on the port side. (On the Olympic, the gate was located next to the First Class Entrance further aft). - Vents, Cowls, and other machinery were re-positioned or added on Titanic. - A box (believed to be a sand filter for water purification) was located just forward of the last window on the starboard side of the 2nd Class Entrance. - In the Titanic's Gymnasium, the rowing machine was positioned forward of the middle column. A bench and wardrobe were added to room, and the countries on the world map in the illuminated sign were outlined differently than on the Olympic. - The forward stairways on the boat deck were open on Titanic. (Olympic featured semi-circular coverings). A Deck. - The enclosing of the forward half of the A Deck Promenade and the addition of a wall with a window and door to the forward section of the promenade was the most easily seen difference. On Olympic, the A Deck promenade remained open along its entire length. - The First Class Smoking Room featured the painting "Plymouth Harbor" (The painting "Approach to the New World" hung over the fireplace on Olympic). Furniture for the room was dark red on Titanic. (Dark green on Olympic). - Two first class staterooms were added in the 1st Class Entrance, on either side of the Aft Grand Staircase. - Space heater added next to the door leading to the Smoke Room Bar in the Starboard Veranda & Palm Court. B Deck. - First class staterooms were expanded to the sides of the ship. A largely unused promenade took up this area on the Olympic. - Window spacing was different where staterooms and the private promenades were located at. - Both of the parlor suites had private promenades added. - The Café Parisian was added on the starboard side. (Not added to Olympic until 1913). - The Restaurant Reception Room was added in the area around the Aft Grand Staircase. - The Restaurant was expanded on the port side. (Done to the Olympic in 1913). - Galley and pantry for the Restaurant were expanded. - 2nd Class Promenade was much shorter. C Deck. - Aft end of the Firemen's Mess Room on the starboard side in the bow was enlarged (two unidentified rooms were included in this space on Olympic). - Starboard crew corridor in the bow, extended aft to match the port side arrangement. Two lockers included in this added space. - Two first class cabins are added to the port side near the Grand Staircase. (A cloakroom was located in this space on the Olympic). - 2nd Class Covered Promenade enlarged. (Olympic featured separate rooms on both port and starboard, near the aft entrance and fans). - Emergency door included on the aft wall between the Third Class Smoke Room and the Steering and Gear Room. D Deck. - Reception Room in 1st Class was larger on Titanic and it featured extra columns. - The First Class Entrances were also shortened on Titanic to allow for the expansion of the Reception Room. - The forward wall that separated the Reception Room from the Dining Room featured three wide windows. (Olympic featured five arched windows per wall). - Elevator grills on the Titanic were different in design, compared to those on the Olympic. E Deck. - Open berths were featured for trimmers in the bow. (shared cabins on Olympic). - Two spiral staircases added in firemen space in the bow. (Olympic featured straight stairs). - Washroom and bathrooms added on port and starboard sides of the fireman's quarters in the bow. - Women's lavatory added in 3rd Class on starboard side, left of the Bunker Hatch. (Stewards berth in this space on Olympic). - Removal of staircase and rearrangement of cabins/lavatories for waiters and kitchen staff on the port side, just aft of the reciprocating engine casing and watertight bulkhead. - Possibly the addition of a watertight door next to the potato store room on the port side. F Deck. - Titanic's Turkish Bath Cooling Room was re-positioned away from the hull. (Cooling room was longer and was flush with the hull on Olympic). - The two Shampoo Rooms and Electric Bath positioned next to each other on the starboard side. More suited in individual use and in proximity to the pool. - The stairs leading into the pool on Titanic featured tiled sides, while the stairs on Olympic were open underneath. - The clock on the forward wall of the swimming bath (pool) was positioned differently on the Titanic than on the Olympic. - Four extra cabins were added on the port side just down the hall from the Turkish Baths, past the stairs leading up to E Deck. G Deck. - Cabins added in two areas in the bow around the No. 2 Hatch for 3rd Class. (Open berths were featured in this area on Olympic). Other changes/differences. - Rear facing pipes on Titanic's third funnel ran higher than those on the Olympic. - Placement of doors, portholes, etc. throughout the ship. - Titanic's center propeller likely featured four blades instead of three. - Titanic Yard Number- 401. Olympic Yard Number- 400.

not evidence, they only needed to install the walls, titanic was not sold out, at a time when everyone wanted to travel to the US, easy explanation, the extra cabins weren't finished, they could make it appear they were simply by having 40-50 officials book passage and then cancel at the last minute. you only need to change the outside over a few months, then in the 44 days the ships are together fill-in the deck layout and finish public areas like the cafe and bars etc, titanic, now being badged as olympic with a "injury" needing repair meant they had time to fit out titanic to olympics old layout as they didn't need to launch it as soon as the "titanic maiden voyage date" so they had time to change that shit.

Paul Gallicos wrote The Poseidon Adventure actually as a protest against something going on at the time. For a century or more ocean liners were the way to make transatlantic travel, however, with the advent of jet passenger planes that could make the trip in hours instead of days, ocean liners became obsolete quite quickly. In the book, published in 1969, the Poseidon was on her last voyage before she began her voyage to the scrap yard. The demolition had actually begun on the Poseidon and some bulkheads had been taken out, making the ship unstable. In the book, a square mile of ocean floor suddenly dropped due to an earthquake. The Poseidon was in the center of this. The sudden drop, the water rushing in from all sides and the instability led to the ship capsizing. The book was published in 1969. The Queen Mary made her final voyage in 1968. Her sister ship at the same time. The SS United States had been laid up since 1965. Other ocean liners were laid up, scrapped, or converted to cruise ships at the same time. The ocean liner industry died an ugly death in the late 1960's. Paul Gallicos tapped into an unfolding tragedy in progress to create a real page turner of a book turned into a gripping movie. What zombieguy might be referencing is that the ocean liner/cruise ship HMS Queen Elizabeth 2 was hit by a rogue 95 foot wave that came out of nowhere while the ship traveled through the "Bermuda triangle" in 1995. This led to an in depth scientific investigation that concluded that where ocean currents collide there are massive rogue waves that come out of nowhere and massive whirlpools as well. The ancient mariners were correct, not making up stories about these events.
@S.M.R
@S.M.R 3 жыл бұрын
@@The_Dudester Did you even read the book? In the book (NOT THE 1972 MOVIE), the ship was converted into a cargo/cruise ship after being sold to her new owners in the late 60s. The renamed Poseidon started her maiden voyage from Lisbon on a month long Christmas cruise between Africa and South America. Her conversion as a cargo ship was to tripe her cargo space, removing lower-class and crew cabins on the bow and stern. This was one of her mayor causes to capsize. On her last leg, she was two-thirds empty of fuel, empty of cargo and improperly ballasted. She was dangerously top heavy. And one wave was enough. The 1972 version was different from the book, Poseidon sailed on her last voyage from New York to Athens for scrap. I think you have mixed them both.

I hate when people call "conspiracy theories" "dangerous". They aren't "dangerous" they just require more research. Stop believing everything that you hear and do further and deeper research to formulate your own opinion on things. Most people today are to pre-occupied with work, house work, taking kids to activities, and this is why they refuse to do their own research, but stop calling it dangerous. That's just a dismissive way of saying "trust me I've done all the research, you don't have to just believe me" and nothing is more dangerous than that attitude.

@@thunderrobots1980s No, no they can't. The yard numbers are established and used by the shipyard for design and construction long before a name is ever even given to a ship. It would mean changing the paperwork on many tens of thousands of documents, not just a few books. The numbers wouldn't be enough since the propellers on Olympic and Titanic used different pitches as part of an experiment that White Star Line and Harland and Wolff were conducting to see what worked best for fuel efficiency, lower vibration, etc. And pulling and replacing those blades off the bosses required a lot of time and work. It took a week for a single thrown propeller blade to be replaced on Olympic. Now imagine how long it would take for six blades, plus the single-cast center propeller!

James Cameron inadvertently did quite a bit to dispell the switch theory. When he made his movie there were precious few photos of the interior of Titanic available so he based his set designs on photos of the Olympic. When you take a look at the wreck there are numerous differences. One in particular is the layout of the radio room. Cameron acknowledged that his set design for that particular location was 100% modeled on an Olympic photo. The radio room in the wreck has a completely different layout. The flooring throughout the two ships is another discrepancy. A number of Cameron's Olympic based set pieces feature carpeting but the corresponding locations in the wreck are actually covered with ceramic tile. And of course you have the addition of the al carte restaurant and additional staterooms on Titanic that weren't present on Olympic.
@MrDanielNewton
@MrDanielNewton 3 жыл бұрын
Another thing you could have added to this video. Not only would Olympic and Titanic's interiors have to swapped because of their yard numbers being everywhere, they would also have to be swapped out because they both had a lot of structural differences, which mainly included the layout of their A and B deck designs. Their Turkish baths and Wheelhouses were also different. Their name plates were also engraved into their hulls, meaning there is no way their name plates could be changed. This clearly shoes how even more impossible the switch theory is.

Both of these ships were HEAVILY photographed during construction with a ton of Irish workers in the area, most of which hated building ships for British owners. People really think they're going to keep something like this under wraps?! Titanic had her designer, the White Star Line's BEST captain, AND the president of the company on board. In fact, the owner of International Mercantile Marine that owned the White Star Line, J.P. Morgan was set to be on board the Titanic for the maiden voyage. The only reason he didn't was because he got sick previously. Why would ANY of these high profile people for the White Star Line be on board during what was supposed to be an insurance scam?

The other big problem with this theory that you don't address here is all the people that would have to be bought off or silenced through threats. Literally tens of thousands, including the 15,000 strong Belfast workers for Harland and Wolff shipyard. And you could see Titanic and Olympic being built for miles around Belfast and people would be wondering what was going on there. And speaking of the 15,000 H&W workers, it has often been misstated that the reason all this work could be done so quickly is because the company had so many workers to get the switch job done with. In fact, they didn't. Many people worked on Titanic and her sisters to build them, but the majority of them were also involved in working on other ships for completely different companies and pulling them to suddenly work on switching Titanic with Olympic would have raised more than a few eyebrows as well as angered long time customers.
@nowhereman1046
@nowhereman1046 3 жыл бұрын
@J Tommy It is very difficult, job or no job, to stop people from talking about something, even in wartime. And then you still have explain why other Harland and Wolff customers wouldn't say anything about their ships' construction being very delayed by the pulling of shipyard workers to switch two White Star Line ships.
@nowhereman1046
@nowhereman1046 3 жыл бұрын
@J Tommy Olympic never had a Titanic propeller. And she didn't need one of Titanic's, she had sets of spares, as did Titanic. Do you not understand that Titanic and Olympic's propeller blades had a different pitch and therefore could not be swapped between the two ships? The vibrations from such an insane swap would have been very noticeable and uncomfortable to all the passengers and crew.
@nowhereman1046
@nowhereman1046 3 жыл бұрын
@J Tommy I have done a great deal of research and I know I'm not wrong. No Titanic propeller was ever on Olympic. The closest it ever came to that was segments of the shaft taken from Titanic. But the pitch on the BLADES was was different and could not be swapped between the two ships.
@nowhereman1046
@nowhereman1046 3 жыл бұрын
@J Tommy Not true at all. Harland and Wolff saved a huge amount of materials concerning the Olympic-class ships, both in terms of construction as well as maintenance of them over the more than a quarter century they were in service. We also have lots of third part documentation that covers this. We even know the fate of the spare blades that were intended for Titanic, some of which were melted down to make memorial statues to those lost on the ship. So much of this has also been researched into and you can find all you want by going to Mark Chirnside or Dr. Paul Lee's websites, among many, many others to find what you're looking for. That is, if you really want to.

There is something else, too, which that bunk theory fails to address: The hull differences between Olympic and Titanic along the upper decks. For those who don't know, the Olympic had fully-open breezeways on its upper decks. During its operation some of the more-uppity passengers had complained about sea breeze and sea spray messing up their appearances. White Star took these complaints immediately to the designers, who then created a partially-closed deck for the Titanic (and also Britannic when its construction began). This partially-closed section, in the forward half of the Titanic's upper decks, had windows that could be opened and closed according to the demand of the passengers. When one examines the Olympic and Titanic side-by-side, from their respective sides, this difference becomes clear. The Olympic NEVER got such a deck treatment, not even in any of its refits over the years. If one examines further, one would see that there was no way the shipbuilders could possibly have made such switches to the hulls of the ships in the amount of time they were together, which would have to be done for that "theory" to hold any water. As a consequence, the Titanic held more water than this "theory" ever could. Yet, there will still be some people out there who will never admit to the fatal flaws of this "theory," just because; I'm supposing that many of them are represented in the 61-or-so thumb-down reactions to Sam's video. An outstanding refutation, Sam, of the biggest fictional account of Titanic since the sinking-in-one-piece story was debunked (possible topic for another episode, if it hasn't already been covered...?)! Indeed, one of the best and most concise refutations ever of this piece of fiction. I actually didn't know that so many of the ships' fittings were individually labeled with their respective ships' hull numbers.

Also, the Father Browne photographs are good pieces of evidence that the switch didn't happen. If u look at the 1st class dining saloon photograph carefully, it shows the partition of 1st class lounge and dining room. The partition had 3 wide glass windows with top corners curved. Olympic had 4 or 5 windows with less width and it's top being a single curve like an arch. The 1911 photographs and later photographs show this. This one is more popular image being circulated as Titanic's dining room. His another photograph of poop deck shows the crane doors face sideways on Titanic. Olympic had crane doors facing forward. Photographs of captain Smith alone and the one with officers together including Murdoch shows the wheelhouse is curved for Olympic. Titanic's wreck has straight wheelhouse wall. Another one is Turkish bath layout. Olympic's Turkish bath cooling room was situated near the starboard hull, ie it had portholes. For Titanic, it was a bit inward and away from the starboard hull. There was a small corridor and the electric bath between the hull and cooling room in Titanic. Basically, Olympic has real portholes and Titanic had fake portholes for Turkish bath cooling room. The cafe Parisian of Titanic has a plain wall at the end bcz there are 1st class staterooms forward. But Olympic's cafe Parisian has a door bcz it has promenade deck instead of rooms. Titanic still has the Marconi room that's in the middle of boat deck while Olympic had marconi room on the port side. That's why Titanic's Marconi room had skylight. Olympic's Marconi room's position changed during refits post Titanic disaster. Theorists claim 401 in propeller blade is due to Olympic using Titanic's blade after she threw one. What they conveniently avoid is that the Port propeller blade was thrown and replaced and the wreck shows the 401 stamping on Starboard propeller blade.
@dovetonsturdee7033
@dovetonsturdee7033 Жыл бұрын
Switchers have been struggling to explain the 401 stamp on the propeller at the wrecksite since it was first discovered. Eventually, they invented the claim that a Titanic propeller was fitted to Olympic during the repair after the Hawke collision. There is precisely no evidence to support this claim. Records from the time state only that parts of Titanic's propeller SHAFT were fitted to Olympic to speed up her return to service. The later repair, following the loss of a blade from Olympic's port propeller in February, 1912, merely involved bolting a new blade in place, and took only a day or two to undertake. When people become as fixated as Switchers seemingly do, truth becomes irrelevant.

One thing you left out too was the Titanic and Olympic wasn't 100% identical. The Olympic's A deck promenade was open the entire length of the superstructure while Titanic's A deck promenade was enclosed from below the wheelhouse to the first class lounge between the 3rd and 4th funnels above. Aft of that the promenade was open. It was enclosed to allow passengers to walk outside without being pelted by rain, wind or other bad weather.

There's another piece of evidence the switch never happened: When the Carpathia went to pick up the survivors from the scene of disaster, Olympic's wireless operator asked if they want to arrive on scene and provide more assistance. Carpathia responded back saying there's no need to because if the Olympic were to arrive on scene, the passengers would be in a panic because of a near identical Titanic, plus it was impossible for the Olympic to come fast considering she was 500 miles away. The changes were likely done piecemeal fashion over time and not in one go, maybe the promenande deck but not features like the portholes. Some people seem to think that Olympic's portside bow portholes were given the extra 2 after the Titanic disaster, but if you look at photos (which seem to be very hard to find in hi res - but do exist as I've seen a cropped down version on the switch debunking site), you can clearly see 16 portholes on the portside of the forecastle on the bow in March 1912. Titanic can be seen behind Olympic in the Thompson Graving Dock with her hull partially painted black. These extra portholes were not there during the time Olympic was at sea for her first transatlantic crossings, or when the collision with the Hawke happened in Sept 1911. With all the urgent work needed to get Olympic's propeller blade (or propeller shaft) repaired, why did they go to the extra trouble of adding 2 extra portholes, plus they painted the lifeboats brown around the gunwales which were all white previously. Something weird was going on, like they were trying to make Olympic look more like Titanic and vs versa.

I've waited for this for so long. My first book on Titanic- I was given it as a present in fact- was about the switcheroo thing. It drew on transcripts from the inquiries. It certainly taught me that certain aspects may have well been improperly examined, certainly by Lord Mersey. Please note that I don't mean improperly examined to support the switch theory, just generally, in seeking the truth through investigation and by properly examining aspects as they came to light. There would have been vested interests at stake and impartiality would be vital, also with a bit of cunning, in order to get the truth. I'm not sure this entirely happened. It's more of a lesson about how the human mind works than anything else. I think a video on the inquiries, and on how to examine and read them, would be great for us out here. They are the most primary source of evidence we have, or had until we could go down there and look at her, and have been so extensively repeated that errors and misconceptions are referenced and treated as fact. I think the best example is the coal fire. It was well out and had been dealt with. These facts have the inquiries as the only source, yet it still goes about that it wasn't out. But it will be there in the testimony. What I'm not sure of is if the fact of the coal having been transferred to the port bunker, is by direct quote from the inquiries or by inference from the slight list to port that started to occur during the voyage. How the hull or bunker steel had been affected by the heat is a matter of metallurgy and quite another thing to determine. The idea of a switch keeps me amused because devil is indeed in the detail, and so much that is stamped and 400 and 401 would have had to be swapped over so quickly. It would have been nice to touch on the internal redesigning between the two ships. After Olympic's maiden voyage, improvements to the (mostly) First Class layout took place on Titanic, enclosing the fwd end of the promenade deck which was open on Olympic. Also the hull forepeak, within the white portion, had a couple of extra portholes asymmetrically placed on Titantic. Olympics were evenly spaced. It possibly wasn't vital to the vid here, but would be a helpful note, as the different layout was visible from the outside so helps identify the ships.

Well Olympic needed the propeller from titanic after she collided with hms Hawke and the wreck show this and also on the wreck there is 2 letters that are MP and titanic dont have MP in it and they not 100% twins either but too us they are twins at a look

That's kind of low effort. I was hoping that you could show us a pic of the wreck with some shots of the number 401. I've only ever seen the dock yard number on that questionable starboard screw. Insurance or no insurance, they'd still have a better ship. Insurance fraud wasn't unheard of. Please do a much longer video and use actual photos from the wreck. Find a boiler with 401. Show pics from the maritime museum in Halifax, etc. like you said, there's got to be something with a 401 on it. Better yet, go the other route and show us something from the Olympic (after the Titanic's sinking) with a dock number 400 showing. I'm not trying to cast doubt, but a ten minute video with just a couple of opinions that it would take too long or you'd need to swap stuff doesn't really cut it :) This can of worms deserves a couple of photos from either wreck

Well done young Sam! You've helped explain yet another mystery. Sadly though, like the moon landing of 1969, you will never convince some people that the switch never took place!!!

I dont belive in any of the conspiracy theories either. If they said titanic was sank on purpose for insurance money to fix their flag ship olyimpic then it would sound a bit more believable. They could say that's why they only re painted titanic on one side for her maden voyage to save money 😂. Got to love these conspiracies.

An operation like this would've required a ton of people to know about the switch. The thought that dozens of people wouldn't have come forward (either immediately or in the decades that followed) after the "Titanic" sank immediately afterward is beyond ridiculous. And all of this was done in the name of ... what? Sinking the crown jewel of your fleet on her maiden voyage in an extremely public manner? The lawsuits, image tarnishing, and loss of public trust would've been so much more costly than the repair costs on the Olympic. Not to mention the risk of the public finding out you did all of this on purpose. Is that insurance money really worth risking going to jail for the murder of 1,500 people? If you think about this rationally for more than 5 seconds the whole thing falls apart. I'll never understand how so many people still entertain this idea.

I think people who believe in conspiracy theories are just bored and lost in life or something. They just want to feel like part of something important, something bigger, and what would be bigger than convincing yourself that you know all the secrets of the world lol. To feel like they're one step ahead of everyone else.

Oof. I remember catching a full-length documentary on (I think) Discovery on cable TV years ago about this. It just seemed to contrived and silly at the time, and the documentary itself was sensationalized. Also, literally was talking to my husband about this conspiracy last night (been binging your videos in quarantine so Titanic has been coming up in our convos), then saw the next morning that this was premiering. I'll send him this since this is a better version than the mess of the documentary I was trying to describe. I wish I remembered more details other than it sending me on the path of being a Titanic buff just to prove it wrong.

Are you going to cover the myth that existed for many years: that the Titanic sank in tact. Yes, some of the survivors said it broke in two, but Bruce Ismay and the crew kept stating it went down in one piece. That's why such films as 'A Night to Remember' show it sinking in one piece. It wasn't until Ballard's discovery of Titanic in the 1980s that the survivors who said it broke in two were proven correct.
@scouttalent7456
@scouttalent7456 2 жыл бұрын
The reason some survivors thought it sank intact was because when titanic broke in bald she didn’t break like how people thought. She broke in on herself, cause the bow to come up briefly. Check at the Jack Thayer sketches and you’ll see what I mean. This is why they thought it sank in tact. The survivors who saw it broke saw the breakage of the bow coming back out of the water.

At least you saw the light, and were brave enough to admit you had fallen for the trap. A "total dolt" would be someone who fell for the hoax, found out about it, and rather than wising up, chose to double down on their belief in the conspiracy theory!

I have an idea for a video: What if Titanic sank during daytime? Let's suppose the ship has the 6 compartments damaged but is daytime, how would the passenger and crew activities affected the sinking?

it would also mean they deliberately hit the ice berg... if it took 7 months to fit out olympic, it would take at least 3.5 months to strip her plus 3.5 months to strip titanic followed by 7 months to refit x 2 thats 21 months at the minimum to switch them, add to that all the threats/bribes that would of been required to silence all workers and anyone within view of the ship yard, all of which never happened....... great vid again sam, keep it up

Ah the biggest problem with this switch theory is that if Olympic was no longer sea worthy and needed repairs then they would have never been able to set sail especially with passengers.

Proof that Britannic was sunk by a mine: While serving as a troop ship, the Olympic was torpedoed in one of the boiler rooms. They didn't find out about it until after the war when it went into drydock and the dent wad revealled. I can picture the guy in the boiler room saying "What was that bang?"
