I would like to say: the paint protected the wreck, the accelerated deterioration we see today is because of the overall failure of the paint, just like a car, 10 years the paint holds strong, the one day a tiny dot of rust forms and with a year rust has completly taken over the body if not fixed. Thats what is happening to the wreck, although i have to say that paint lasted for 70 years, Bob Ballard said he recognized the red paint on the hull.

If you believe in past lives, that intense pull you feel to Titanic might be because you have a past life connection. I was completely obsessed with Titanic as a kid and used to have a recurring dream where I was on the ocean and “Sweet Dreams” by Eurythmics was playing. You know, that line where it goes “I traveled the world and the seven seas / everybody’s looking for something.” I was also randomly extremely afraid of water for no good reason - like, too scared to get in the shallow end with arm floaties on. I was also scared of going down the drain in the bathtub and refused to take baths for a long time. Naturally, I grew up, got over my fear of baths, and became interested in other things. Then weirdly enough, in university I ended up working at a cafe where Kate Winslet’s sister was a regular (they look uncannily alike btw, google Beth Winslet if you’re curious). Fast forward to last year, and I (a former atheist who never believed in spirits) had started to have paranormal experiences that were freaking me out. I eventually reached out to a pair of psychics for clarity on what was going on, and during my reading they randomly told me I’d survived the Titanic in my past life. The goosebumps when they said that were unrealllllllll. Your comment definitely gave me that energy.

I've always wondered why none of the funnels have ever been found. Could you possibly do a video about that? I love your channel.
@SundrySun90

This is solely my assumption. But I think the funnels are in the debris field. Since the aerodynamic effect that happened when the ship went down did rip apart parts of the ship that went against it. The funnels might’ve been apart of the ship that fell completely apart and is now apart of the debris field that is surrounding the wreck

Shame that Olympic wasn't saved because she would've made a good hotel ship to carry on her class's legacy.
@neilbain8736
@neilbain8736 3 жыл бұрын
The Olympic was requisitioned and used as a troopship. She wasn't something to be messed with and made up for her sisters. She was pretty bad ass and there are many youtube videos about it. It involved ramming and sinking stuff. When she was retired by Cunard White Star in 1935, a lot of her fittings and structures were saved via auction. The White Swan Hotel in Alnwick, Northumbria, contains one of the complete first class lounges preserved as a specifically built dining room. All the panelling, the stained glass windows, fireplace, light fittings and even ceiling are from the Olympic. Some of the stairwell bannisters, a piano and a revolving door are there too. The hotel are quite proud of it all, and have an information leaflet. If it isn't busy you can take photographs too, if you ask nicely. There are more parts elsewhere, originating from where she was partially dismantled in Tyneside ( River Tyne, Newcastle ). The final hulk was towed to Scotland and dismantled at Inverkeithing in the shadow of the Forth Rail Bridge. The Britannic, launched 26 Feb 1914 was in the process of fitting out when she was requisitioned for WW1 ( started Aug 4th 1914 ) and became a hospital ship. It would be interesting to know how far this had gone and what happened to her fittings.

@25Erix
@25Erix 3 жыл бұрын
You can blame the Great Depression for that. Being the global financial hardship that it was, a lot of industries suffered. While it is a shame Olympic couldn't be spared, I prefer to think that her final act of service was providing jobs to the shipbreakers at a time when jobs were difficult to get. She was too expensive to keep sailing and she would've been too expensive to let sit somewhere. Compare that to Old Ironsides herself, the USS Constitution. Oldest ship in the world still afloat (only outdone in age by HMS Victory) and she was probably cheaper to maintain during the Depression than a ship many, many times her size and she's been escaping the shipbreakers since the end of the War of 1812. And as long as her paneling and fittings remain at the White Swan Hotel, Olympic is going to outlast her sisters even in death (so to speak). I would think her legacy is still very much intact, just not in the way we'd prefer it. Her exploits are well-documented, I'm sure the Royal Navy remembers her very fondly, and she's got a dedicated fanbase of her own.
@neilbain8736
@neilbain8736 3 жыл бұрын
@@25Erix I think you're right about Olympic providing jobs while being scrapped. I'm sure I read that she was bought specifically to be scrapped for that purpose, on the Tyne where the Jarrow Marches originated, and finally at Inverkeithing on the Forth ( immediately below the Rail Bridge ). Many of her fittings are still in the North of England. Those in The White Swan are the most publicised, and certainly preserve her memory. It's a bit of a trek, but I've been there a few times.

I also noted from the 'triple image', how much deterioration has occurred around the 1st funnel opening. In '87' scraps of the stack were still there, as well as other 'divisions' (probably the boiler uptakes merging under the stack), now that's all gone, and there is nothing but a gaping empty square hole. And, of course, we can't see it in the images, but we know Captain Smith's bathtub has crashed below decks, as well as the basically collapsed gymnasium, holes in the officer's quarters roof and Boat Deck, the falling off of part of the A-Deck screens, etc. I personally believe the salvors DID knock off the crows nest: t was still there when Ballard visited in '86, and gone the next year when the salvors went out. It's just TOO coincidental that it 'happened' to fall off right between Ballard's ALVIN-Jason Jr. visit and the first by the salvage team.

Compared with other shipwrecks (ex: Lusitania), Titanic's wreck is actually in decent shape. By the way, the Britannic has LOTS of plants that are consuming nutrients which doesn't allow the bacteria to grow. In other words, the Britannic is like a coral reef area to itself. But Lusitania in shallower waters than Britannic is actually decomposing quicker than Titanic due to the cold temperatures that doesn't allow for corals to grow.

In the 74 years it lay undiscovered the decay was no where near the pace it is now. Has bacteria or another process been inadvertently introduced by visitors.. is an angle that could be addressed. What I found interesting is although they were definitely present back in 1987, the resticles were not as prevalent throughout the body of the ship. You could still make out all of the lettering of "Titanic" and see the paint. Today you can't see anything. If the bacteria is so bad for the Titanic, I figure it'd be much more covered after the 80 some yrs before she was discovered than she actually was. Something somewhere sped up the process and immensely at that. Could it be our actions on the surface have a significant effect on something as far down as the Titanic? Could we be inadvertently making that area an even worse breeding ground for that type of bacteria? It's all conjecture at this point but It makes one think.
@AArdW01f
@AArdW01f Жыл бұрын
Its because their growth curve isn't linear. Your question is presented in such a way that assumes it is. The middle of the deep Atlantic is not a soup of rusticles. It's a soup of micro organisms. Rusticals don't exist in abundance with out a massive food source -ie a gigantic piece of iron and steel dropping into their home. What you see with Titanic is the culmination of a over a century of colonization by these microorganisms. Each subsequent generation increasing the overall population by order of magnitude. This is why it appears to be accelerating so rapidly - it quite literally is. Eventually the wreck will be nothing by a smudge of iron on the sea bed. And when that happens this massive population will die off and the surrounding environment will slowly return to its natural equilibrium. Think of it like weeds growing unchecked on a property. It starts small then becomes uncontrollable

Titanic also has to put up with people (speaking truthfully) looting the ship for valuables. The ship is pulled apart to retrieve "artifacts" of value. As you said, the heavy submersibles also perch on the decayed decks to send in ROVs to explore the interiors, further weakening them over time. One of James Cameron's dives also resulted in severe damage to the hull when the sub crashed into the wreck. It's rather ironic that we are "preserving the heritage of the world's most famous ship" by literally ripping the ship itself apart to loot its valuables. I think that people often forget that it's the actual Titanic sitting down there in the darkness. The images we see aren't of a replica, a painting or CGI. It's Titanic herself.

It seems to me that nature will get rid of our mess all by itself.

Its fascinating...but you're right. In fact one of the ways in which they encourage coral reefs now is to sink rows of cars, with of course the engines and batteries removed of course, so that coral reefs grow on them, and eventually the car is just gone and only the reef remains. While its sad we cannot raise or preserve the wreck, the fact she was found and having all of the rusticals on her, enabled us to learn more about the sea floor, even when she is gone, her memory and legacy will live on with people and modern day ships, unlike a lot of ships, she made it into the history books and somehow built a legend up around her, but then I think its because it was her maiden voyage that she sank on helped her into legend, plus the fact the press of the time called her the unsinkable and ironically, she sank on her first voyage never making it to her destination in New York accept for in film, such as Ghostbusters 2!

Would it be possible to raise the engine parts from the stern? Like the piston or the probeller shaft. I mean they are made of solid steel.

Just a quick thought. With people going down, visiting the wreck, documenting the state of decay etc, would be possible for a small ROV to go down where funnels used sit? Just a thought, not that I'd personally want anyone to do that, but would it have been a possibility of the ship was in better condition?

Do you cover other shipwrecks? Perhaps a video on why the wreck of the Bismarck is in rather good condition. Frankly it's hard to think of other shipwrecks that are preserved quite so well.

I was always in favor of leaving the Titanic at the bottom of the ocean out of respect for those who died. Now that it has been almost 15 years since Millvina Deans passing, I think it should be raised piece by piece and re-constructed on land. Perhaps in New York where it was intended to dock. Better than having it disintegrate. The "big piece" was re surfaced, the rest of it could be too. Obviously it would be a huge undertaking and very expensive. Restore it as best as it possibly can be, build missing parts, such as the funnels. What say you Sam? Great channel! Id love in depth videos about Wallace Hartley and the other Titanic band members.

It will be real sad when the girl is gone. I probably won't be here then. After it collapses can we get somethings still there and bring up top. Like the captains bathtub. And the big chains on the bow snd the propellers and the engines. I wish we could find the captains log book.

I understand the bacteria, harsh environment, acidic conditions, etc. My question would be . . . why now? I've seen photos of the wreck taken in the 1980's. I don't recall it being covered in "rusticles" when it was first located, and it had been in that harsh environment for 60 years at that point. Has the idea that this bacteria might have been brought in during one of the many excursions to the wreck been entertained? Rather looks like the wreck was doing fine for the first sixty years. I don't mean to cast a shadow on the extraordinary accomplishment of Mr (or is it Dr?) Ballard in locating the wreck. But finding it may have brought about it's final destruction.

Could be that the ship wasnt as far deteriorated as it is now. As time goes by the ship condition gets worse so the bacteria eating it have a easier time. Im sure people exploring the wreck made some impact, but I think its mostly the ship is slowly deteriorating and the worse it gets teh faster the bacteria go.

We should build new magnificent ships to honour the Titanic. People before 1950 probably didn't care, since they still got ships like the Rex, Normandie and others, which were bigger and more luxurious than the Titanic, so they probably didn't feel such a loss. But for us it's so sad, we don't have any ship to look up to. It's like if an entire segment of human art and craftsmanship is getting lost. Let's build a new beautiful ship, to prove Thomas Andrews that his (and all the other shipbuilders') legacy will go on forever!

The scientists that are always going down to the titanic are the ones that is causing it to fall apart faster because on several dives they landed on the deck and banged into the ship's frame which has weakend the old girl , if they wouldn't have touched the ship with the submarines then it would still be in better looking condition.

There is a fantastic book by Charles Pellegrino called “Farewell, Titanic” in which he makes a pretty convincing case that the Titanic wreck has become a canary in the coal mine for the havoc that climate change is wreaking on the oceans. His theory is that the acidity at that depth has increased as more organisms are forced deeper and deeper underwater in search of food,, which is part of why the wreck’s deterioration seems to have accelerated the last decade or so.

Is it just be chance that the bow of the ship landed “the right way up” when it hit the ocean bottom? I sometimes wonder if it had landed upside down, we wouldn’t then have that instantly recognisable shape that the underwater footage always shows.
