In 1997, James Cameron's Titanic rocked and shocked audiences the world over. The story of Belfast's Ship of Dreams captured the imagination of millions of cinema audiences and smashed box office records.
Today, the romance and the tragedy of Titanic still endure.
To celebrate Titanic's release on Blu Ray 2D and 3D, James Cameron visited the home of the great ship in the city where she was built: Belfast.
From how 'A Night to Remember' influenced his work, to their thoughts on Titanic Belfast, we caught up with the legendary director and Titanic's producer, Jon Landau, for a chat.
"This museum celebrates the history, reminds us of the history that we should never forget"
For more Titanic videos and information on the ship visit the-titanic.com's video gallery: goo.gl/HB1V7.

A lot of people, even Jim Cameron, refer to the Titanic centre as a museum and it really isn't. It's an interactive experience, with cafes and a lavish gift shop for after. You can't get near the staircase unless you book the expensive afternoon tea option or hire it for an event.

@@johnking5174 I totally understand that, however the shape of this Grand Staircase is completely off, especially with that landing. E I N S because 1500 people died that night which is more people than most shipwrecks
@An89Go
@An89Go 6 жыл бұрын
E I N S it sunk on her maiden voyage which is not something that happens often. It was the largest ship of that time, described as "unsinkable" which made Titanic's tragedy even more interesting. The class division on the ship was significant, especially after so many third class (poorer) travelers died. Also, the reason the ship sunk (it hit an iceberg) is very rare - ships around that time were sunk by torpedos or because of storms etc. Not icebergs! The way the ship sunk (it broke on half) was another unique element we should add here. So many reasons! After this disaster there were many positive changes (safety vise) and this tragedy made this kind of traveling much safer because of all changes and updated regulations.

A Night to Remember (as every Titanic film until Cameron's) was a box office bomb. Some data says it barely broke even at the box office while other data suggests that it didn't break even at all. No studio was going to fund a remake of a film that performed that poorly. Additionally, the film had been largely forgotten by the public with the exception of the small group of people around the world who had interest in the film prior to 1997. After James Cameron's film, interest in the ship exploded and renewed interest in anything and everything Titanic related, including A Night to Remember which was then re-released on DVD and VHS, and found a new audience. It's not a bad movie but, as much as I love the subject of Titanic, I fell asleep the first 3 times I tried to watch it.

It was the most expensive movie ever made at the time - A nervous 20th Century Fox teamed up with Paramount Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment because they didn't want to completely foot the bill incase it failed. You think they would have even CONSIDERED taking the risk if he had pitched them a remake of "A Night to Remember" or a documentary that 2% of the population would have loved and 98% would have been completely BORED with? He did a fabulous job at balancing mainstream tastes with historical accuracy. The only problem is that over the years the Titanic fanatics have taken the the fictional Jack and Rose characters and applied it to the ENTIRE FILM - Totally missing out on all the good factual information.

Yes, Cameron took one of the greatest of history's tragedies, in itself populated with amazing and colorful characters, and used them as a back drop for a ridiculous love story with characters that never existed. Little wonder that his screenplay did not win the Academy Award for that year. That is unfortunate as the film's visuals are striking.
