Are they abandoned Cold War missile silos? Are they relics from an ancient civilization? Steve examines the mystery of massive 100-foot tall concrete monoliths hidden in the woods of Brimfield, Massachusetts. What do they have to do with modern transportation and what’s their connection to the Titanic disaster of 1912? Watch and be amazed!

That was some fascinating history. I live in Ontario,Canada, and there is a section of a Grand Trunk Railway line , through the end of my farm. Abandoned during the 1980’s, it’s now a snowmobile/ hiking trail. That's COOL! I often marvel that if today an outfit like Walmart or Home Depot or Office Max started a massive constriction project of 100 new stores but only poured the cement pads before abandoning them, there would be a MASSIVE PUBLIC OUTCRY and Walmart etc. would be forced to chisel away all of the cement pads until not a trace was left behind. Yes? But somehow the ill-fated Central New England Railroad got away with leaving hundreds of odd cement objects behind after the plug was pulled. In many towns, solid concrete bridge abutments set next to public roadways took many lives as cars crashed into them. Brimfield had one on RT. 20 until around 1985 when it was removed and the hazard eliminated AT THE EXPENSE OF THE STATE. But to be more charitable, these amazing relics - like the pathway under your Dudley home - are an interesting chapter into the evolution of ground transportation. Thanks for sharing your Central new England Railroad story. -Steve Magnante

Hello Doug Eaton, Thanks for watching and writing. Though the old Roadkill's Junkyard Gold episodes were the realization of TEN YEARS of trying to get this kind of a show on TV, as you mention, they weren't really what I had in mind. The "roadkill rescue" and "graphic rebuild" elements were not my ideas. I thought it was good enough to just find cool stuff in junkyards and tell what it was / is. But the Decision Makers said: "the show needs another BEAT". I have learned to despise the term "another beat" since then. It means: "we don't really know what we want but we want something...add something". So frustrating. Also, there would have been NO WAY I'd have been allowed to use "paper props" or model cars as "teaching aids / cool stuff" during the TV days. Mostly it was FEAR that some copyright holder would come running with a lawsuit for royalties or "rights" and hold up production or SINK already produced episodes. Too many lawyers. But on You Tube "fair use" laws allow magazines, sales brochures and models as long as its done in an educational setting with no concern for copyright hassles. This is as it should be. In fact, I'm told a person could use Led Zeppelin music in a You Tube video IFFFFFF the song is being examined as a work of art and is explored properly. Music students often make KZbin videos that break down chord structures and other details of otherwise "copyright protected" music. You Tube is great like this. I don't do music but am happy I can use vintage paper and models and toys to illustrate educational / fun points and details. Thanks for watching this You Tube channel! -Steve Magnante
@mindeloman
@mindeloman Жыл бұрын
@@SteveMagnante Rick Beato's channel is a prime example of using classic songs under fair use laws because he breaks the songs down in a classroom type video setting. But even Rick gets hit all the time by either Sony or Universal and he has to fight. And the crappy thing: the artists love what Rick is doing. Most support him. In fact Rick is now interviewing notable artists. Peter Frampton, Sting, Billy Corgan, Steve Lukather, and others have done interviews with Rick. The artists don't have control over what the publisher does. But I agree, you tube allows a much more broad range of content vs. TV. Steve, you should really diversify and start doing more of these history videos in your style. Take us to places we've never heard of.

Steve, didn't you just rerun this video last week or the one before? I know I watched it very recently, but I have lately turned into a railfan, and have been watching all of Hobo Stobe's videos and a bunch of Hobo Shoestring's videos, so the original upload of this might've been suggested to me. Plus which, I've developed a fascination with the Cincinnati, Hamilton, & Dayton, railway which came right through my township section in Dayton where I grew up. I had no idear that a train ran through there when I was living there. They tore up the tracks in 1926, (after they'd been there only about fifty years) I think after selling the railway to either the Ringling Brothers or Barnum and Bailey, but I didn't pop out for another forty years. I even rode a Yamaha YZ100 on that right of way, which by then was used for electric transmission lines. They just removed the old metal frame transmission towers, and replaced them with single poles, through there a few years ago.

There's a highway or two in NYC that were started but never finished because they ran through forests and other places. The environmentalists got involved and ended it. But up until a couple of years ago, the overpasses to "nowhere" until they were removed when the adjoining highway was redone a few years ago. Also on my block in 1987, they were building houses. There was an abandoned car in front of the lot which the local kids hotwired after it was left behind after an accident. Well, the construction crew didn't know what to with it, so they squashed it and buried it under the first house. That car is a red 1985 Chevrolet Corvette. Oddly enough, back in 1979-1980, my parents tried to buy the lot across the street from us, but in order to do so they had to buy the lot across the street and the one that has the Corvette buried under it. So, I guess you could say my block has its' own "Cadillac Ranch" of sorts.

Steve: I've been watching your many outstanding videos on vintage auto finds up in Bernardston and have learned so much from them. At some point, I'd like to get in touch with you directly as I need some "guidance" on my 62 Dodge Polara 500 "project". More on that later though. Concerning the Southern New England ("The Titanic Railroad")... The author, Larry Lowenthal, who unfortunately passed away about two years ago, had researched and written the manuscript back in the 80s. It is one of the best pieces of railroad history writing I have ever seen. Larry was taking orders for copies pre-pub at the train show in W. Springfield and I happened to bump into him there and we got to talking. This has long been a subject of interest to me going back to 1973 or so when I first saw the Three-level crossing while riding a Mass Bay RR Enthusiasts excursion on the P&WRR. Anyhow, at the time, I was starting to use desktop publishing technology to publish the B&MRR Historical Society's "B&M Bulletin" and suggested to Larry that this would allow him to bring the Titanic RR book to the point where he himself could shop for printers and self-publish. One thing led to another and I ended up doing the layout and design for the book, which got published in 1998. It is great to see you discussing it and raising awareness among your legions of followers about this fascinating subject. I thank you. Looking forward to more from you and hopefully corresponding with you about the '62 Mopar project. John Alan Roderick, Somerville, MA

@@speedfreak8200 The book I show in the video says that the NOISE of 2 to 4 STEAM POWERED freight trains crossing this 1/4 mile long RIVETED IRON bridge would have made a RACKET to be heard for miles away. And I have to say, the non-reinforced concrete pylons I show in the video would have certainly never lasted long under severe use. You can see they are made with a mix of sand, pebbles, palm-sized rocks and a binding agent. The outer shell is badly degraded. Not the stuff of eons. Also, there's no doubt the RIVETED IRON structure would have needed a complete rebuild / replacement once better welded bridge constriction techniques arrived in the 1940's. So it was a curious mix of "cheap on-the-fly" effort and trail blazing madness (with a touch of greed thrown in). The book by Larry Lowenthal spells out all of the shady stuff behind the scenes. The local police agencies or State Police would certainly stop and investigate if you set up a tent on the rails but mostly folks quickly run across them as they make their way to / from the Quaboag River for fishing. But in cities, OH YES there is a strong effort to keep curious kids off the rails and out of the rail yards. As there should be! Nice, A for effort and random knowledge. Holy shit! Author of that book Lowenthal is probably one of my relative from mysterious Grandfather Irving Lowenthal
@SteveMagnante

Larry Lowenthal lives (lived?) in nearby Brimfield, Mass. If you have relatives in Brimfield, MA, it could be a match! I am not sure if he is still alive but his excellent book was done in 1998 or so. Highly recommended. I'm pretty sure Amazon has copies. Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

@@debbiebermudez5890 ... just remember that these migrant workers didn't come for low pay. They came to get any job they could, and starting wage is what you get when you have no skills. At least I had a decent education when I started working 50+ years ago so moved up fairly fast within the trades.

@@rupe53 Mr. B. Here very true ! So forget the BS we and I use WE have been handed, the trades are facing a shortage of guys and galas, would it not make sense as our past has shown new comers were the work force . Some are here already . The powers that be would keep having us fight each other and not do the work that We all need in this country. I am so tired of BOTH Party’s and the BS WE have been hand. I serviced this great country at a time when Americans young men were running to Canada or getting Medical Excuses many young men paid high price so many of us could have good lives . This why I feel so upset by what I see ! ( am sorry for going off ) ! We are 2nd to none!

Sometimes, I wonder what people in the dark ages would think when they would see a Roman aqueduct or other such ruins. This is a little different because it wasn't built,but there are remains all around of our industrial past that make you reflect on how grand it all must have been.

How often do you do your "give aways"?
@SteveMagnante
@SteveMagnante Жыл бұрын
Hello Steve Wenners, those "give aways" aren't from me. I never ask anything of viewers except to watch if they feel like it. Those give aways are what I call "telegram scams" and are harmless unless you "meet them half way" and reply, then give up your SSI, bank info, etc. I have no idea what these "telegram scammers" are up to but they seem to invade just about every "comments section" on KZbin at one point or another. Thanks for watching and writing and IGNORE the "telegram scams". -Steve Magnante

Thought I can’t really say cuz it wasn’t completed so don’t know the impact it would or would not have had, but it seems to me it was doomed from the start or some other railroad would’ve acquired it and finished it if it had serious profit potential 🤷‍♂️ … railroad “greed” has scarred this country profusely 🤦‍♂️ case in point east Palestine Ohio and Norfolk southern just had another go off the rails on the other side of the state several miles NE of Dayton that isn’t getting no msm coverage 😳😡 despite all that’s been said I too a railfan 🤷‍♂️ ✌️🤙
