It's not every day that we get to look at S scale layouts, or even S scale trains for that matter! This one is located in the Bay Area and owned by Ed Loizeaux. Ed and his layout have appeared on PBS as well as in print media. In this video, Ed shares his layout on this layout tour video, but also his motivation and approaches to creating this gorgeous representation of East Coast transition era railroading.
You can learn more about the NYCVD here: nycvd.org/inde...
From the website:
The Valley Division of the New York Central System serves the upstate New York region originally handled by the Catskill Valley Railroad until 1849. The NYC's heavily-used four-track Water Level Route ("You can sleep!") mainline along the Mohawk River frequently experiences washouts or landslides from heavy rainstorms. No alternate routing exists. The Valley Division of the NYC, somewhat "off the beaten track" from the primary mainline between New York City and Buffalo, remains an important back-up route for cross-state passenger and freight traffic. Local customers on the Valley Division include extensive dairy farming and creamery operations, logging and sawmill industries, petroleum refining, coal extraction, a steel mill and numerous smaller supporting companies. The NYC Valley Division provides transfer of freight between many local industries with interchanges at Albany and Utica. It also has extensive local passenger service to the many hamlets of the Catskill mountains and valleys.

what an amazing layout. the attention to detail, and the realism it adds, are second to none on this layout.

Very impressive. His attention to detail in all things about the layout, not just the modeling, is remarkable. Also, in my opinion, having the layout's creator narrate in first person is preferable to having a "narrator" interview the owner in a Q and A format. Lastly, the website is very professionally done. Bravo!

Thanks for the compliments. All the layout tours on this channel are narrated by the layout builders/owners/operators for the exact reasons you pointed out! It's about them, not me.

This is by far the best S scale presentation I have ever seen. I'm an engineer so attention to detail is my problem. One of the most important things to watch for when building in S scale layout is curving. S Guage is very difficult to make it look realistic. This layout has perfect turns. I learned a lot from this presentation. It's great to know the size difference between HO & S and what can be achieved with both scales in order to get a realistic look. Great job - thanks for taking the time with this presentation. I have a better idea of what I'll be doing some day with my New Haven railroad. I have the EP- jet locomotive. The locomotive was before it's time but if you ever read up on it it was really interesting. Thanks again

Love everything about this video. You did a great job presenting, speaking clearly without many ums and ahs to distract. The layout is really impressive, all the more so because you have accepted the challenge to build in a less common scale and had to think and adapt your structures in every case. Congrats on this fine achievement.

Absolutely freakin awesome! 👍 You must be very proud. Thank you for making me smile and giggle. This layout has everything I would want in my layout but wasn't available in the 60's and 70's. I have a degree in electronics and I could see as technology advanced that all of this could be possible. I think the only thing you haven't added is moving auto traffic. Not needed. I agree that S - Scale is the best. Not to big and not to small. I never gave much thought to use it because I thought it was becoming an unsupported gage. I could go into all the cool things that you have done but the list would be to long. 😊😊😊👍

One of these ever videos of a model railroad layout. Ed's explanations are exceptionally excellent: concise, to the point, with many informative tips and hints. Marvelously detained bridge and other structures. I've never seen better information of using HO gauge items to blend with S gauge to effectively form distance optical illusions. This video showcases S gauge as well as (if not better than) a professionally produced promotion of S gauge.

Incredible layout, thank you for sharing. So much talent and thought went into it. I love the inclusion of the Mobilgas Tribute to his Dad & the use of HO scale Traffic lights being 1/3 smaller than S scale work for 1948. Bravo, I could spend days watching his trains run!!!

Phenomenal layout. The work and craftsmanship is beyond description. Your remarks concerning the PRR are factual. The NYC was in better financial condition than the PRR. It's too bad that this merger was allowed to culminate in the Penn Central. I was employed by the Erie-Lackawanna in the 1970's, then ConRail, then NJ Transit, 43 years of service. The PC ruined some good railroads by their skulduggery, the L&HR was one of them. The suspicious fire on the Poukeepsie bridge sealed the fate for the Maybrook yard. Enough of my rambling. Everything on this layout is magnificent.

Since s scale is 1/64 that means that you can buy a crap ton of matchbox cars and put them on the layout, but first you got to make sure to add extra detail to not make them too toy like

I know plenty of people who use JMRI for car forwarding and it works perfectly. Maybe you were trying to do something that was too complex for it, or maybe you didn't understand how to use it...?

typical new yorker arrogance. The Pennsy was a more beautiful richer and more sucessful railroad that the NYC. The Pennsy as well as other roads had water traughs to refill water while running. The Pennsy didn't go bankrupt till after it merged with the NYC and became Penn central. The Pennsy was the STANDARD RAILROAD OF THE WORLD and the NYC knew it
