Safety at sea was enacted partly by the sinking of the Titanic. It is only after a disaster strikes that we start to improve safety.
@jamesbattista14664 жыл бұрын
Jeb Kerman that is so true. One needs only to look at past commercial aircraft disasters that have made flying today so much much safer. It’s as if the sacrifice of others was necessary to learn the fail points and weaknesses of our technology, thus making our current lives so so much safer. This applies not only to transportation, but also to many other aspects of our modern lives where safety improvements have saved many lives.

Worth noting that in 1912 the new material linoleum was an expensive luxury item.
@mattc20945 жыл бұрын
was the linoleum of the time similar to today's modern linoleum that was popular in residential housing in the 1980's?
@rks5815 жыл бұрын
@@mattc2094 Yes and no. Most modern flooring that is called 'linoleum' is actually vinyl. The material used in the 1980s was almost always vinyl. Linoleum is made from solidified linseed oil mixed with pine rosin and fillers like powdered wood, cork, and chalk, with a fabric backing (canvas or burlap/hessian). The name is from the Latin words 'linum' (flax, the plant that linen and linseed oil come from) and 'oleum' (oil). Vinyl, polyvinyl chloride, is a petroleum product. That's caused some renewed interest in linoleum, which is 'natural'.
@mattc20945 жыл бұрын
@@rks581 Thanks for the in-depth knowledge! That's quite interesting... what would natural linoleum be like to walk on? Would it be harder than vinyl which had a soft feeling?
@matthewq4b5 жыл бұрын
@@mattc2094 NO it is not soft feeling, the closest modern-day equivalent is VC tile. True Linoleum is still available and becoming more and more popular as it is eco-friendly and does not outgas formaldehyde like many of the petroleum-based flooring products.

0:35 is the lightship that Olympic would accidentally ram 20 years later. The ship might have survived had the radio not broken. The repair cost them valuable time and come morning on the 14th they were backed up with passenger messages. This meant they spent the entire day, right up to the collision with the iceberg, clearing this backlog, being overworked to the point that they didn't grasp the severity of the iceberg warnings they were receiving and didn't think to pass them along to the bridge. (Titanic, rather ironically, broadcast an iceberg warning on behalf of SS Amerika that just may well have been about the very iceberg she hit a mere hour before the collision)

There were so many icebergs in Titanic’s path, if she had missed the one she would’ve hit another. In fact, a low-lying icefield was in the way and she might have run aground on some and Titanic would’ve sank very quickly and I doubt anybody would’ve survived. There were many things that went wrong for that ship and her passengers and crew, but avoiding ramming the icefield wasn’t one of them. Because of the lone iceberg that Titanic hit, she had enough time to evacuate at least some of the people.

Olympic was the largest ocean liner in the world for two periods during 1911-13, interrupted only by the brief tenure of the slightly larger Titanic (which had the same dimensions but higher gross tonnage owing to revised interior configurations), before she was then surpassed by SS Imperator. Olympic also retained the title of the largest British-built liner until RMS Queen Mary was launched in 1934, interrupted only by the short careers of her slightly larger sister ships.[6][7] The Olympic was withdrawn from service and sold for scrap in 1935; demolition was completed in 1937. Decorative elements of Olympic were removed and sold at auction before she was scrapped, and now adorn buildings and a cruise ship. Although, there's a school of thought that posits that if the Californian had mostly shut down her boilers (maintaining only the minimum pressure to power lights, hot water, deck machinery etc) that it would have taken longer to build up a head of steam, travel the 10 miles or so to Titanic's location, and transfer the passengers than the Titanic had before sinking. Regarding the coal fire in the forward starboard side coal bunker (Coal Bunker W) of Boiler Room No. 5 I challenge anyone to explain how members of the fireman's crew were able to deposit all the displaced coal from said coal bunker into the portside coal bunkers. Tell me how this could have been accomplished. You can't force it in through the hatch doors. The only way you can deposit it into any other coal bunker is from the top at the Orlop Deck level. Given the series of ladders and catwalks, etc. it would have required a Herculean effort in the form of some type of labor intense bucket-brigade to redeposit all that coal into the port side bunkers. I submit that the crew of Boiler Room No. 5 did one of two things to address the coal fire in Bunker W: 1.) Require that all 5 of BR 5's double-sided Scotch boilers use Coal exclusively from Coal Bunker W until the seat of the fire within the bunker was located and the fire put out. 2.) Remove the coal from Bunker W forming large piles of coal in front of each Scotch boiler on the Stokehold plate flooring within the Boiler Room. Regarding how the port side list developed by the night of April 14th I would submit Option 1 would come closer to helping explain how such a development appeared as it did. Anyway, I just wanted to lay this out and see what sort of response it may get. Robby

I believe you got John Phillips (American Singer.) and Jack Phillips mixed up, Jack Phillips was the wireless operator.
@pmpcpmpc47374 жыл бұрын
Hi, you asked the rhetorical question on what would have happened to Titanic's survivors if the wireless operators failed to repair their machine. Well, the answer I believe is that nothing, as Titanic would not have sunk at all. After Phillips and Bride repaired the device, one of the messages received caused captain Smith to modify the course southwardly to avoid reported ice and icebergs. Had the radio not been operational, this adjustment would not have happened and Titanic would have certainly avoided the iceberg that sank it. It still might have run into an icefield or encounter icebergs and suffer some damage, but considering how very rare and unlucky the damage Titanic suffered was, it was unlikely to have been sunk in other scenarios. Also, even if Titanic still sunk even without sending radio distress calls, considering the density of shipping traffic in that are and calmness of the sea, it is likely they would have been found by another ship, perhaps a few hours later.
