That effect is called a Tremolo (or Tremulant). It is done with air pressure. There are devices in the organ that oscillate and, with each oscillation, they dump some air from the supply to the pipes. This gives the pipes a vibrato. Almost every pipe organ has a trem (church organs too), but it is essential effect in theater organs like this one.

A truly ungracious comment. It reminds me of the story about Max Reger. Max read a review of some of his work, and sent a message to the reviewer: "I am sitting in the smallest room in my house, with your lousy review in front of me. Soon it will be behind me."

Wurlitzer was very good about color-coding the voice tabs. That adds to the visual effect of the instrument very much. (If you didn't know - white for flutes, tibias and diapasons; red for reeds and brass; yellow for organ sounds that emulate strings.) As to the comments about the Leslie effect, the organ came first. Leslies were built to emulate organ tremolo.

Great camera angle taken from the balcony of the Place de la Musique in Barrington Hills, IL. I've been there several times and have about eight CD's from there. Frankly, the balcony is the best place to hear the blend of this magnificent instrument. You literally can get run over by it. Great sound! The mics handeled all of the dynamic ranges including the 32's. Love it!

The entire point of the "effects" is to have as many tone colors as possible, the way a painter can do more the more colors he has on his palette. The colored buttons change the tone colors, and in any given family or class of tone (horns, strings, etc.) you then have multiple options from soft to loud. The big outer box is very decorated to match the theatres in which these were installed, and they're all-around very theatrical, as they were built to create the moods for silent movies.

No, although I can certainly understand why you might think that. A Tibia is actually a very large-scale (fat pipes) flute. More than any other, it is the sound associated with the theater organ (as the diapasons are the basis of the classic or church organ). Tibias are nearly always used with a heavy tremolo to shake the sound. This is the warm, weepy sound you think of when you think of theater organs. Actually, a tremolo can be applied to any voice, though. Thanks for the note!

If i remember correctly its either 1 or 2 large spencer turbine blowers most large theater organs have two blowers of the same horse power and the more expensive ones would have one large turbine blower that was usually had a 50 h.p motor or even a 100 h.p. motor depending on how large the organ is and the distance from blower to bellows if there arent any massive pressure ones near the blowers

Sorry, but I am NOT incorrect. The Wanamaker organ in Philadelphia is the second largest organ in the world. The Atlantic City organ is actually larger. These, however, are "straight" organs, built along more classical lines. More to the point... enjoy the music and forget the sophistry of trying to decide which is the bigger instrument.

Andreas, your "vacuum cleaner" church organ can have more of this sound (at least if it's a pipe organ). Church organs and theater organs are different beasts, but a church organ SHOULD be able to lift you out of your seat. Look at some of the other vids on this channel, and you'll see what I mean. I really appreciate you listening!

I'm a church organist as well and the one I play every week has only two manuals or keyboards. I remember sitting at the console of the Wanamaker Pipe Organ in Philadelphia for a picture and I was so petrified nervous even though Peter Conte said not to touch it as the organ was still live.

Have you ever played this organ? If not, then you don't know what you are talking about. You play on certain "key"boards based upon the specific resources of the organ. I think this is a very fine rendition to be played on the organ. I also think Martin Ellis is an excellent organist.

That massive "box thing" is the organ console. Did you REALLY not know that? This particular organ is a theater organ, designed for use in the days before the technology was invented to put sound with motion pictures. Did you REALLY not know that? As as instrument, the organ is far older than the piano, and the two are not the same thing. Did you REALLY not know that?
