"Kitty" is an affordable bulk string that a lot of people use. If you're in the mood for something a little nicer then "YoYoStringLab" is a better albeit costlier bulk string. Their plutonium line, which is Evan Nagao's signature string is quite nice. If you are looking to try something nylon and/or boutique then "Airetic" makes a reliable long lasting product; but be warned they're not cheap. They do however last much longer than your standard poly. Some prefer polyester, and others nylon. I like both for different reasons. Also length is very personal and can change overtime. I like a string about as long as from my belly button to the floor plus an inch. If it's a special yoyo that I want to minimize my chances of hitting the floor with then I'll take a couple inches off.

They're the easier to see colors. Higher visability = more tricks landed and/or easier to do a trick. Imagine how hard or impossible it would be to see a black string in the dark. Also when you're being judged it's important to have a string the judges can see.
