I go with stainless every time. It's robust and pretty much bomb proof. But the biggest factor is, as a Brit I like my cup of tea to stay hot. Titanium heats faster but looses that heat just as fast! which for me counters the benefits. As for weight, long hikes I can see the benefit's, so you just drink your tea faster. The cost is really the elephant in the room!! What are the benefit's of having an extra $100 buying power when looking to outfit your self for the wild? That knife? That axe? Military surplus verses civilian sleep system?? Economics is a big factor in convincing the "Long haired General" that you need that New shinny thing!! just my thoughts. Stay safe and leave nothing but foot prints.

$100 can go a long way with filling up the rest of the kit. I don't think a Titanium canteen should be anyone's top priority. However, if you love your system and aren't willing to leave anything at home, the Titanium can really shave weight from your pack and still allow you to carry everything you want or need.

Actually the cup comes with a lid. If you keep the lid on the cup,. Your tea will stay surprisingly hot. I've been using this kit for over a year and truly love it .. -15c coffee cup in snow bank and as long as the lid is on. It stays hot for a long time...

I've been using titanium for a decade and while your right it loses heat quicker, it really isn't hard to put the cup back on the heat for a minute to warm it back up, titanium is stronger than stainless (even in thinner sheet) so it really is bombproof, when your stainless canteen will have a huge dent in it the titanium bounces back with naught but a scratch.

Every company in the world has factory defects. If you apply that logic to everything there is nothing that can ever be trusted. That being said if the weight is what brings you the most value then the Titanium is the only option for you. There is nothing as strong and light as the Heavy Cover/Keiths Canteen. I trust my pathfinder canteen but I do carry the Keiths way more since I got it. I think it's one of those things that once you get a taste for something you just can't go back to the way it was before.

I’m wondering if the wood burning cage to go under the cup to cook with as from th3 pathfinder set would work with the titanium set. I’m thinking buy both and use the wood stove from pathfinder for the titanium cup and canteen. What do you think or suggest?

The wood-burning stove does fit on the Ti system. You can buy the stove itself from the Pathfinder website. I wouldn't buy both I would pick one and if you do pick the Ti you can get the stove on its own. www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/products/stainless-steel-canteen-stove

As I see it ... If I was planning to hike the Appalachian trail, I might be concerned with the weight. If not, an option would be to buy three(3) Pathfinders for basically the same money so you will have spares. :) However, if I did buy Keith's titanium, I'd buy the Pathfinder case to carry it in. This is an old video but i still want to say that the main difference to me is the design. I hate (despise really) anything with those floppy butterfly handles. So to me the question is whether the Keith canteen fits inside the pathfinder canteen cup because that will make it the best system for me! If I could just purchase the cup on its own from Dave's store I would.
@newageselfreliance

The canteen does fit inside. It is a tight fit and rubs on the sides, but it does fit together. I also prefer the handles on the Pathfinder canteen cup. Sorry, it took so long to reply to your comment.

So I have been thinking about picking one of these up for a while I pulled the trigger on it and it's great the only thing that is weird is there an internal lip that stops the last bit of water from coming out like the neck of the canteen comes down past it's shoulders by almost a centimetre you can feel it with you finger (by feeling the inside the bottleneck, the very bottom part) , does yours have that or is mine a lemon? Keep up the good work
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 3 жыл бұрын
Mine has that as well. But the lip is only on the shoulders. Mine is flat on the front and back of the canteen. So when I'm drinking I can get every last drop but if you pour from the shoulder sides the water does get inside that lip until you turn it and pour from the front or back side.

👍 Nice overview. I have owned both and sold the titanium kit. I have used the Pathfinder Canteen/Cup system for many years and am completely pleased with it. I have found this kit to be bullet proof. Also the stove portion works well as a pot stand for a Trangia alcohol stove. However, I do not start out in the morning with the goal of covering miles like a through-hiker might do; so the weight savings might be more important if that is your interest. Having said that, at 73 weight savings is becoming more interesting to me. Consequently I am trying a Nalgene Oasis Canteen combined with a Boundless Voyage USGI style titanium cup (with both handles and bale) & stove. With the metal cup I disagree with Mr. Canterbury that the canteen needs to be metal. My initial testing indicates this new kit may be the best choice IMHO. And, the cost for all 4 components (canteen, cup, lid, stove) is about $70.00.

I always carry my titanium and a plastic canteen. I'm not worried about boiling it out. I carry an eyedropper with bleach in it. If it gets funky I could clean it in the field without any problem. If something were to hit it really hard or if you were to drop it very far the Nalgene would crack and break. You condense the plastic and I guess enough trauma would break it but it seems like it would be harder to break besides I have too many canteens as it is to try the Nalgene one. I have a plastic military one that has a filter in it that will filter out just about anything. Maybe the lid would fit on the now Gene bottle. Who can say
@newageselfreliance

I only like having a metal canteen because it makes a good backup in case my nesting cup cracks or breaks. It allows me to utilize the 2 is one and 1 is none theory without carrying extra things. That is a great price for a full set. I might have to look into getting something like that.
@ROE1300
@ROE1300 7 ай бұрын
@@newageselfreliance I understand what you are saying about 2 metal containers and once thought the same, clearly in my choice of the Pathfinder Canteen/Cup system. However, I then realized how difficult it would be to crack or break a stainless steel or titanium cup. I guess I could lose the cup, but thus far after decades of camping I have never been that absent-minded. Of course, anything is possible. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I forgot to say I only use the bleach in the plastic one. Titanium is a natural antibacterial. I usually just wash it out real good at home. Also you can use the drops of bleach to sanitize water. And the chlorine will evaporate out of it

I just recently got the stainless steel Pathfinder canteen set. The canteen itself seems to be very nice. The wide mouth is certainly better for pouring things in. The threading on the cap is rather subtle. I very much like these larger kidney shaped canteens that hold a bit more than the standard 32 fluid ounces. 37-39 oz ain’t much more than the usual 32 oz, but it’s something. The canteen cover is weakest link in the chain. The cover is a bit too small to comfortably fit the canteen. The early 1900s style handle on the canteen cup is a bit flimsy, but not as bad as reviews had initially led me to believe. I still prefer the butterfly handles, though. The Pathfinder canteen is a good stainless steel canteen, I think. I have not yet acquired a titanium canteen, so I can only go on what others say on them.

The only advantage of titanium is that it is lighter. In my opinion, if you are happy carrying the weight of the Pathfinder there really is no reason to invest the money in a Titanium Canteen.

I have the Pathfinder and like it alot but it is a pig (a bomb proof pig) when it comes to weight. Looking at the weight savings in the Keith, its a tough decicion. I really do want the Keith, maybe I'll spring for it and if I like it and can sell the pathfinder. I do like all the features of the Pathfinder system. The stove works really great over a Dakota Fire Hole and its a decent digging tool. I would like to know if the stove and cup fit the each system. I can tell you that the Boundless Voyage Titanium Canteen Cup and stove will fit the Pathfinder Canteen. This does cut weight down by 1/3, but you are sacrificing some outstanding features.

The bottom half of the Pathfinder has straight walls and the Keiths has a tapered bottom. So the Keiths canteen fits inside the Pathfinder cup but the Pathfinder does not fit inside the Keiths cup. Also, the handles on the Keiths Canteen Cup are lower so they don't fit into the stove as the Pathfinder cup does. However you can put the handles of the Keiths cup inside of the stove, it's a tight fit and it does scratch your handles a little but it can be done. Hopefully, this helps. Should I be worried about the durability of the Keith's titanium?
@newageselfreliance

I'm not. I have been using mine for years and it has held up really well. Keiths makes the canteen for Heavy Cover. They are the exact same canteen the only difference is the logo.

Has anyone had issues with the center seam on these canteens in terms of keeping it clean?
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 3 ай бұрын
The Pathfinder is easy to get a dish brush into, so you can clean that seam. In the Keith canteen, I use a toothbrush to clean inside the bottle. Pouring boiling water into them also helps kill anything that might be in there.

For me, it's titanium all the way... pretty much the same properties as stainless steel, at half of the weight. You can get quality titanium gear on Amazon and eBay as cheap as chips nowadays. My entire setup including 1600ml pot, 500ml pan, 800ml kettle, stove and spork will all nest inside one another, and in total actually weigh less than a medium sized Zebra Head Billy Can.

It is super light. When I got my first Titanium pot and pan set I was scared it wasn't going to hold up at all. It felt like a toy almost. Once I started using it I was blown away when it comes to how durable and easy to use it is. I really do enjoy Titanium as well.

Which if I got one ide have to find cheaper one so wouldn't be as good but the Pathfinder with the stove that's cool. So may be with 50 plus but ide try to find one closer to 20 lol. You know, I came to the conclusion that aluminium is the best. Lighter than stainless steel, heats up faster, keeps the heat longer, so basically saves my energy and the energy I need to heat it up. Downside is the questionable long term effect of aluminium to the body, but stainless steel, to be more specific the chrome in it, is even more questionable if abrasion finds its way into the body. Trangia products, the duossal stuff, seems to be abrasion happy. Clean it with the rough side of a sponge and then wipe it with a white towel to see that its turns your white towel grey on and on. I don't have that problem with the Pathfinder products though. So much about "made in Sweden" vs. "made in China". Anyway, occasionally I prefer aluminium, since I'm not an ultra light packer (cotton tent, canvas backpack and such) and therefore appreciate saving on some weight. Titanium sounds fancy, but the price...and as someone already pointed out, it doesn't do great with keeping the heat. I once had a titanium pan from Snow Peak and it sucked to fry eggs in it. So in the end, there is always a hook. Stainless steel for summer - aluminium for winter.

The issue I have with aluminum is that it isn't as durable as stainless or titanium. I feel aluminum bends more in my pack. It doesn't break but I'm always worried when I see it bent out of shape. I always worry that it will crease and split open. No matter which cook system we use there are always pros and cons.
@eadghe
@eadghe Жыл бұрын
@@newageselfreliance I hear you. I noticed such flaws especially with the cheap aluminium products. My 80s Trangia cocking stand doesn't suffer from that, but I've also seen such old stuff with heavy signs of use. I haven't tried the hardened aluminium yet, although that one seems to be thinner too. I guess it depends on the person and what kind of tasks are done with it. As long as I am not falling straight on my back, I doubt I ever bent it badly. But such thing might happen if someone goes through all kind of terrain or even has bad luck. It's kinda tricky to travel alone. With a group, I'd say someone should carry iron cooking stuff only. Most heavy, but that would be my first choice, if it wasn't so heavy, which makes it impossible. Btw, stainless steel, I also like that you can expose it to fire, in a way that aluminium could't handle and would be destroyed. And of course you can cook eveything in it, without having to worry about acidic foods. It's still a tough choice for me though. Depending on the situation, I might not even get my hands on acidic stuff and could create fire pits or not and have to save on ethanol fuel. Well, such thoughts and events make the thrill about it, so I guess that's fine. haha Cheers!

Yeah, there is a lot more to think about than people think. I don't think the perfect cook system exists for everything. Each trip, each meal it all changes what we wish we had. The best we can do is pick a system and practice using it within its means.

I'm going with the titanium cap mostly because of the look over the plastic cap but no leakage from either cap unlike the patherfinder bottle. Also the heavy cover bottle is not as wide as the pathfinder which I like as it goes in and out of my carrier better.

I can taste the Stainless too. You get used to it after a while. The other thing that really helps is those flavored drink mixes. They help hide a lot of the taste that comes with Stainless bottles or filtered lake/river water.

If I had to pick between a canteen or weekly groceries I would pick the groceries every time. It is a really good canteen and I'm glad I got it but I don't feel it is an important piece of kit. You realize you can buy a stove that fits the cup right ? And you don't have to buy a titanium when you can buy aluminum so it will be light if you really have to know how much is a cup or any other measurement. Some people will take a punch and just make a little dent at the water line. So the price is the only real issue. I bought my titanium canteens back when I was working the pipeline and I had plenty of money. I could not afford one today in the Biden economy. Also Dave has lowered the price of his canteen set so it's even cheaper and you save more money than $100 now. One advantage on Dave's stainless set if you can put a couple of d-rings over the handle and stick a stick in it to hold the cup up when you're cooking. In fact his next Generation cups come with that on the handle. Which you cannot do with a butterfly handle. Of course I carry a piece of wire around and it could go around either cup and you can hang it on a small chain. Again it doesn't really matter which one but the stainless steel handle would get in the way of hanging it like a pot one thing I worry about the stainless canteen is the plastic lid. If you were to ever drop it and it landed on something hard it could shatter that lid or at least crack it. Where is the middle lid would not break but of course both canteens would be dented the only difference is one of them you would still have a lid on
@newageselfreliance
@newageselfreliance 7 ай бұрын
I've never had any problems with the plastic lid on either the canteen or the water bottle. It's a Bakelite cap, just like the old radiator caps in old cars. They are built tough. I tried that ring-with-stick trick, and the weight of the stick made it hard to keep my cup from tipping. Also if you take the stick off the rings fall and you can't get the stick back on. I'm probably doing it wrong but I haven't figured out the advantage of that technique yet.
