Instructions unclear, gave a dancer Fly and propped her on an unreachable pillar, then spammed Forbidden Dance until everything became frogs.

I was always partial towards teleport, and either vanish or shirahadori (with 97 bravery). The problem with abilities or position that makes units untargetable, is enemy units just attack others; those reactions make enemies waste turns instead. Any of the perfumes nicely shore up the weakness of being attackable in the first place, but I've always been partial towards cherche and chantage. But septieme is by far the best for dancers using minuet or last dance.

Yeah, dancer is very strong. It belongs in S tier. However, once you get MC to have monk/ninja combo, he just basically one shots everything including the bosses. You give the other characters the same combo or better classes, they destroy everything to the point there's no need for a dancer or turn anything into a frog.

@@charlettmoon2693 I don't know about funnier, but it's certainly more fun. I find tactical games kind of boring when you take the tactics out of it, and instead just brute force your way through everything.

One thing you didn't mention or even consider for Summoner in its placement is that all of its spells are party targetted specific. It's massive aoe's will only target enemies or allies based on the effect. Things you can do is target an ally that's about to rush into the enemy team to further extend summoners range without bringing the target any harm. No other spell caster can do this without hurting the targeted ally.

@@CyrusKnight7 playing through again to have some fun with this an realized a couple things.. 1. It’s a lot of fun to send my monk in with a tactical nuke.. and 2. When you attach it to a unit that takes its turn right before the summons goes off, they can literally guide that bad boy in!!

Using Knight Skills on an Archer is fine, but man, taking that Equip Crossbow onto a Knight makes for a wonderful weapon destroyer. It may not be optimal, but I love that walking paradox.

Dragoon became my favorite FF class because of FF tactics. I knew they weren't as strong as other options but the cool looking sprite and the jumping attacks just captivated me as a kid.

I main Dragoon in XIV because of this game as well, I also have a tattoo of the job symbol from XIV on my left shoulder. Love that class so much, and my bias makes me love (almost) all the Dragoon characters from every other Final Fantasy.

Same. I've been in love with the aesthetic of dragoon/lancer since FFIV's Kain. Love Freya, love the dragoon class, loved to make bartz a dragoon in FFV and so on. The class is just too cool.

An important detail that you left off for both the Summoner and the Samurai: their magic effects don't just hit an area, they also are user friendly, so you don't have to worry about hitting your allies. This is quite relevant for the Summoner in particular. Once you get the hang of planning ahead for the turn order, it's pretty easy to set something like Bahamut to go off on one of your units, then have them walk into the middle of a group right before it goes off.

When I was a kid, I thought summoners sucked because I didn't realize that they couldn't target their own team. I just assumed that all AoE effects in the game worked the same as the black and white magic of which I was much more familiar. Meaning that in my head, summoners were extremely impractical because of how wide of areas their spells could hit.

One thing that a lot of people miss about priest, is they are actually the fastest mage, as fast as thieves. This matters a lot if you are trying to heal people or provide a buff.

I always have a female Geomancer with draw out. They have the best equips to boost MA. Insanely powerful.

​@rabbyd542 thanks for stating the combo. On its own, geomancer is lucksack and you need tanglevine/will o' the wisp most, while the ninja, arithmetician, samurai outclassed it. Does have shields and lets you use thief's caps late game, but knight swords, glacial gun and Javelin II (balthier just bowls over anyone he outspeeds and makes reequip with guns scary) own. Nature's Wrath is a decent counter if you get the debuff off I admit. Arcane strength always helps. I do feel the best Generic job in the game is time mage for quick on special characters as that is way easier than the mime (and self-casting gives extra mime turns to auto win), let alone the mana shield manafont Combo if you don't wanna teleport. With combos, white mage given holy, fastest mage speed and backup where iaido arcane strength masamune was 400 damage let alone arithmeticks will have some magic attack and more speed. Is surprising how much better Ramza and agrias (she also has good evasion but low physical attack) are when using for magic attack as early game ifrit/fire or orators mimic darlavon/invite get crazy, and yeah arcane strength makes the world go around, iaido included as well as those success rates. Generic squire helps with JP spillover for special characters and JP Boost helps a ton for thief that takes forever to level to 5 with the other ninja prerequisites, and 4 for dragoon. Move+1 helps set up Agrias and Reis a ton so you'd wanna get that spillover to level them faster. Not sure why vid rates them that low unless it's in a vacuum, yeah 2:51 let alone you need to level it crazy for knight, onion knight and mime, which can be crap if not used properly. 4:00 Chemist sucks lol fixed gun damage with missed rend (which knights suck outside parry for mage, or equip armor/reis monk with brawler vetter than equip swords outside blood sword, and knight is trash until knight sword excalibur if not giving Orlandeau) and items are obsolete outside glacial gun. Just use auto potion and skip it unless developing for mage unlocks for special characters. No mention attack boost/teleport with archer is sad. Break misses a ton even with concentration outside maybe rend speed. 6:30 black mage gets power crept by instant and gaffgarion ambushes, just painful to actually charge magic over use arcane strength and forget it. White Mage holy is faster, let alone invigoration with Mystic which of course is forgotten to 4 shot bosses at 50 speed.

@OroborOSX11 just use a special character. I think Mustadio and Reis are the only ones who can't Equip swords and shields, though Reis has dual wield. Felt like an idiot doing so much work with an onion knight once I realized the knights' Equip abilities help them (shield for Mustadio who can equip robes to buff glacial gun) though Balthier can equip almost anything without losing barrage as Orlandeau would his sword skills. Still, for generics, that attack boost helps ninja a ton without going into bravery brawler minutiae or stealing that accursed blood sword to life drain. Just wish doublehand would work with axes for geomancers to be worth removing shields for, but at least throw does good damage to take away the random damage for high atk. Those shurikens are terrible lol but cheaper. I do generally aim for that or Nature's Wrath which helps magic jobs a ton with defense boost/lifefont on, similar to Adrenaline Rush.

I think you might want to re try the bard, just like the dancer debuffs the bard can be like a time mage. Make him sing the speed song and by the time the enemy is in your face you'll be getting 2 turns in a row. What is wonderful is this "adds" more turns and in a way lowers the turns it takes for the song to go off. Meaning it starts to play on top of its self. like at the first few rounds you'll get 1 song before the enemy's turn soon you'll get 2 songs off and more and more.

What are you talking about? That's not how ability charge times work in FFT. Each ability has its own charging speed that is in no way connected to the speed of the unit (the only exception to this is the Jump command, which is kind of it's own deal separate from other abilities that require charge time). The exact opposite of what you said is true in this regard: instead of the speed song coming faster and faster, your units will take slightly more turns in between castings, and it will seem to come slower in comparison. The only way to speed up abilities that charge is to equip the Short Charge support ability.

Why? It's a mid class. Better than knight but you're probably not doing solo challenges compared to teleport iaido 😂 or party challenge to 4 shot invigoration with defense boost. 14:40 Equip polearms thief Jump is a nightmare, wouldn't max jump and under 50 CT isn't even a risk.

@@MrVariant because it's a great versatile class. Geomancer is the premiere all around class. Great equipment options, decent growths and class multipliers, it can really fit just about any role on a team. I look to see how geomancer is placed on a tier list because it gives insight into how the person values the class entirely rather than just "He not 1-shotting the enemy? This class bad 👎" Also check the geomancer only challenge runs on KZbin, they're fun series

@RatedB1 you're not saying I'm wrong, but there's a reason vids that don't highlight them for big damage. Did wish you said it helps chapter 1 when Samurai and Dragoon are useless with their weapons being locked. Geomancers are an average class that is easy to master, with unintuitive attack boost that doesn't boost their own geomancy, but it helps dragoons and archers for a low 400 JP compared to doublehand which doesn’t work with bows/jump. Maybe Agrias too, but it's easier to use her weak holy sword as a geomancy substitute with naturally strong white magic/speechcraft MA backup, and ignore hallowed bolt given silence for 700 JP sucks as it won't stop most attacks compared to 100 more JP divine ruination having 5 range and confusion which devastates. A nice litmus test is what's beating Wiegraf or Gaffgarion on its own (which Geo's Nature's Wrath isn't doing crap though tanglevine could stop Gaff). Even mystic/orator bravery trolling to turn to chickens pre beowulf is comedic gold; feel free to check my Luso's fried chicken vid to do 900 damage to one with a brave monk punch. No idea why praise/preach are so miniscule to increase and can miss way more than decreasing threaten/solution, which can be devastating and solution fuels Marach.

Hi, very old hat here. Onion knight gets its stat boost at level 8, and only gains 1 job level per 2 mastered classes. I May or may not have spent 400 hours using a degenerator trap on Ramza and Agrias as Calculators in zeklaus desert only to relevel them as lv 8 onion knights using Wild Boar breeding for their Bequeath Bacon hidden monster skill. I can confidently say that you cannot go above 99 for character ages in the menu that shows their biographies/ages. Nowadays we got all kinds of programs that can break and hack games, but getting near max stats was my goal in the psp version during high school. I think I ended with Ramza at 40 physical atk and hitting max damage with monk's shockwave/earth slash as a dark knight. fun times.

Ramza as ninja after mastering monk. Equip martial arts. You dont need weapond and you punch twice. And1 trusty geomancer with steal or speak skills and youre good to go. Dont forget to get Cloud from another dimension and get his Materia Blade from top of the volcano with move find item!

Dude. I made a team I call the traveling troupe. A dancer, a bard, an Oracle, a monk and a mime. Have the dancer debuff your enemies, have your bard buff your party and your mime will (with it's much better accuracy) double that up. After a few turns your enemy is crippled and your team is tearing through them like cheese paper. Or you can use it for a double heal with items, the double earth slash with heal or have someone accumulate and it will punch holes through their chests....... just pay attention to the turn order. Having ONE mime is like having 5 other soldiers on the field because it gets one turn PER unit on the field plus it's own turn. Sir I respect your takes but get on board with the mime. Low key one of the best units in the game and when learned they are too much fun!

Mimes are fun and have a lot of potential but the juice wasn't worth the squeeze for me. To difficult to plan around and improvising is even more tough. Accidentally helping an enemy or downing a character... Big headache to me. Calculator tier.

Calculator has a warping effect precisely because it's incredibly practical. You don't need to do any of the calculations yourself, just turn on the AI and tell it what you want it to do. Usually I set my calculator to auto battle with the berserk option, and FFT's AI will have your Calculator happily delete the enemy. Set it to save fading life and it'll be the best heal bot you can play, and frequently better than any player could.

@@zidaryn I don't know about War of the Lions, but the original PlayStation version has auto battle options. I never use them, because auto battle is boring, but the option is definitely there.

I remember having Ramza solo the entirety of the final missions at Orbonne Monastery with dual wield just to see if I could. Any mission that required two parties I just had another character hide in the corner and not contribute while also being to far away that the enemies didn't pay him any attention. It was a long time ago but I think I had Ramza as a Dual Wielding Monk, with Excaliber for Haste, heavily equipped him for magic and physical evade and used Counter as his primary means of dealing damage. If he hit it, it died. If it missed him, it died. Nearly lost the final battle but ended winning by a hair as it took a few hits to kill Altima. Not many, something like 3 or 4 hits.

​I HATED that stage on my first playthrough. I turned Ramza into a self insert for my first playthrough and made him a WHM. I got there, realized what was going on and had to restart my entire game. Went as a Monk for my next playthrough since they can do a bit of everything.

You completely misunderstand mimic. They do not target the enemy you targeted but the square relative to their position. This means that if you attack in front of you the mime attacks in front of it. This is important because you can target squares with no one in it, so if you have a knight that is not in range anyone, but have a mime with an enemy in front of it, you can attack an empty space with the knight and the mime will attack the enemy in front of it, if the knight is using a knight sword, then the mime will attack with that knight sword. This also works with spells want to heal some one who is out of range, target a square that corresponds to the ally relative to the mimic and the mimic will heal the ally, you can even move the mimic while the spell is casting to get in range of the ally if you were not when you started casting. Of course the most broken use of mime is in conjunction with universal targeting moves, you could have 2 dancers for example, or a dancer and a mime the mime will copy the dances, while still being able to (unarmed) attack and mime normally. The mimes biggest disadvantage is that they do not get any abilities or equipment, and will some times mime when you don't meaning you always have to be mindful of them so you are not damaging your allies on accident. They have a huge learning curve, and come too late to compete with other late game classes, but they are not Squire level to say the least

Best way i can explain it is, if someone attacks 1 square in front, the mime attacks 1 square in front of it, if someone attacks 2 squares in front, the mime attacks 2 squares in front of it, if you attack at range 3 front and then move 1 to the right i.e. an "L" like a knight in chess, so does the mime, but its really hard without visual aids lol Nice to meet you fellow mime user O7

@@Prinygod you don’t know how to break mimic, despite all that text. Dancers are too slow. I got vids with quick iaido for an extra positioning turn, and arithmeticks graviga. The enemy won’t have a turn, though setup is very expensive and an infinity plus one sword.

@@MrVariant i did not say how to break mimics because the video creator was already aware that they could be broken, i added something the VC did not know, that allows some one to use mimic with out breaking the game. You are getting proud of some thing you read on a broken set up's post, i mean if you are prepared to use calculator, why not use 5 and skip on the mimic?

@Prinygod but you stated the dancer which doesn't work at all, especially by the extra effort needed to unlock a mime (squire/chemist level 8 with both dancer/bard level 5 prerequisites). The enemies are too fast for it to really work, with way more hp than the 40 from double mincing minuet to matter. The arithmetician example is an infinity plus one setup that takes less time than making a dark knight/onion knight work, which people actually make vids of when they don't do that level 99 overkill bs in build recommendations. I see you got no comeback for quick iaido which gives the mime and user extra turns. Though it's easier to simply cast quick on Orlandeau, Balthier or someone else with broken setup, so you played yourself thrice. Let alone there is nothing to differentiate multiple arithmeticians in the same auto win party, unlike all those other examples which give replay value. And to go back to your first point, you stated how to break the mime while giving misinformation, exactly like what you said about the video creator.

I've always felt Dark Knight should've been unlocked for Ramza from the get go after a certain point in the game, or at least his own unique version similar to it. Ramza deserved his own version of knighthood like all the other powerful knights that join your team

I agree that Ramza should have a special class that he gets at like chapter 3 or 4 but not dark knight. He should be more of a holy knight because he's too pure of heart to be a dark knight.

@@strokes3345 well I suggest dark knight for a number of reasons - Ramza stands against the church - He eventually learns the truth about the zodiac stones - the church has branded him a heretic - the fell swords dark knights use do more DMG the less faith you have, something I imagine Ramza would have very little of. At the very least I don't think he'd be a holy knight at all. At least something more neutral.

In the oringial PSX Balbanes calls him a “fine Knight” and I always thought a nod to his father would have been for his unique class to be “Fine Knight.”

Ramza being a Dark Knight cheapens Gaffgarion. As his Fell Knight job is the same thing. And it was called Dark Knight in the OG version. I think Ramza should have gotten a unique in lockable class just for him only, but he’d have to master Squire and learn Ultima to unlock it. Could be called the Ultima Knight or something similar or cooler sounding. But it also gives the player a reason to learn Ultima.

It would probably take forever, but I think a skill tier list would be much more useful. Like, Squire, its bad, but Equip JP Up, Focus, and Move +1 are such good skills that it really requires investment into the skills. So much is about mixing skills between classes to create OP combos, so that would be more useful as a guide to people who may not have played FFT yet.

I agree partially with this comment on the squire for the jp up and move plus one ability. But focus isn't very useful in terms of abilities. Yes it gives plus one attack. But I think 90% of people only use it as a level and jp grinder mechanic.

@@michaelpoole5082 I think Squire has some decent abilities, but they're very situational, and sometimes require a bit of creativity. For example, in a recent run of my own, there was an enemy Lancer poised to jump on, and kill one of my units. So to save them, I used Throw Stone to shove my own guy out of the way before the Lancer could strike. Granted, the shove effect didn't trigger, and my unit was promptly taken out. But my point is that the option was there, and there was nothing else that any of my other units could've done to possibly save the guy otherwise. And Throw Stone at least allowed me to go for broke.

Not worth it. They have terrible 3 move. I tried doing that and couldn't reach Meliadoul to steal chantage compared to move+2 despite her height advantage. You can also use steal heart with a female thief to easilh get the ch 1 dorter sniper archer, independent of height. Red Chocobos also have Ignore Elevation (black has fly) for a turn to mount rather than pay 700 JP, and you can act in deep water.

@cameronsmiljan9374 that is post game for mobile or that multiplayer rendezvous rare. Teleport is always better too, or just use maxed jump despite 5 usually getting in contact with an enemy.

I will argue two things: First, archers have one unique quality in that bows can arc over stuff. Crossbows and guns can only shoot straight. Granted, magic can hit anywhere in range, but still. And while I don't disagree with squire, it's primarily there to help you grind up other jobs with jp boost and focus among other low-damage skills. Its worth noting for cheesy grind starts where you box an enemy in a corner and repeatedly focus on tackle+heal. I just felt this meta usage wasn't emphasized enough, but it doesn't change the ranking.

Love your list. In my experience, the last 25% of the game gets really easy because your team is so damn strong at that point, so I never deal with calculator tier units anyway, but I take massive exception to one ranking. Dragoons are S-tier all the live long day. 1. They are basically knights that don't suck in terms of fighting ability and HP. Before you jump, you have to hit Select to see the turn order to know if your attack will land or not. So missing jumps should never be an issue. 2. Jumping itself is OP as all get out. It's unblockable. Also, Dragoons can't be damaged while in the air. 3. They have ridiculously good abilities. Spears are melee attacks that hit 2 spaces (no chance of a counter or first strike). They have the reraise ability if they get killed. Then they have ignore elevation, so they can walk anywhere you need them to go. 4. Since you have to be a Thief to begin with, you should have +2 movement to equip them with to make them even more mobile.

Next step is to explore synergy of different job combinations for the party. For example, and old favorite: Bard, Dancer, Mime, Mime, Calculator This is a wonderfully synergistic party. Range and movement doesn't matter much at all. The mime's effectively triple the potency of the bard, dancer and calculator. Whether its power, magic or speed stats or buffs.. you have lots of versatility in the support, and the main strategy is the calculator :P the strategies and party types are endless. you could have pure single job masters competing. could compete magic vs melee. could compete floor faith party vs high faith parties. could have monolithic parties vs each other... really lots of options.

Hopefully for the remake Dark Knight will finally be a "unique" extra class for Ramza unlocked by that certain iconic story fight instead of some super grind that takes the entire game to unlock. Will it be over powered? Sure, but there are already so many overpowered story characters with unique classes that can solo the game once you get them you might as well get to have the same kind of fun with the main character.

My favorite TRPG. I really hope they do a remake like Tactics Ogre! I know Dragoon isn't the best class, but I always kept a few around just because of how awesome they looked. By far my favorite looking class, plus the jump ability was a lot of fun!

The Summoner is just a Black Mage with less powerful Mag stat and party targeted spells that cost more MP. When you look at the damage calculation for Summoner and Black Mage, you'll see that the damage for the Summoner is the same as level 3 and 4 Black Mage spells only at much greater cost, charge time, and with the bonus that there is no friendly fire or enemy healing by accident. Black mages also make better Samurai for Iaido lol.

My uncle used to own a game and video rental back in the day. One day I went in and he was quiting the rental part of his biz and moving to just sales. As a kid of course I never had an cash but he let me peruse the store and grab 1 of anything I wanted and of course I could still borrow from his own personal games. I remember i borrowed his re 1 and 2 cause they looked cool and a copy of FFT for my keep game. I musta played that game a few hundred hours.

Bards had to be a nightmare to balance because they came out with some of the weakest stat growth and their abilities likewise feel a little too weak. In a vacuum I would put them at the bottom of C. Giving Bard and Dancer skills to other classes makes a lot of those abilities feel better.

I've become a bit more fond of Mediator on my recent playthroughs. Threaten and Solution are deceptively powerful as debuffs and have a pretty high chance of hitting. Hit any physical based monster with Threaten a couple of times and they're basically useless. Hit Velius with Solution once and he'll be dealing normal summoner damage, hit him twice and he'll be relying on seal or basic attacks, and you can almost always get both hits on him before he finishes casting Cyclops. A Knight with Monster Talk and Talk Skill can be a pretty fun tanky debuffer that doesn't depend on MP nad has range Also, Oracle is very strong if you're levelling up a low level character. If their Faith is high enough, they can cast Pray Faith on themselves with 100% success rate and then a bunch of their debuffs get super high chances to hit. Super underrated classes imo

Same. I slept on Mediator my whole life as "That job you only use to recruit monsters." In my much more recent runs though, I've actually been giving it a fair shot, and have been getting some surprising mileage out of some of its abilities. I wouldn't call them amazing by any means, but I've come to believe that Talk Skill is a solid supportive ability set with decent versatility in the effects it can inflict, with the added bonus of no need for MP or charge times.

Singing is the fastest way to raise a calculator. Also they have move+ 3. It is necessary that all melee characters spend time as a Bard.

also, stat grinding aside. 2 males with Bard skill as secondary, 2 females with Dancer skills as secondary, and a mime in the party is hilariously fun. Speed buff, and speed debuff. Each BarDancer skill that goes off, the mime instantly duplicates. So you get 4 (2 original characters using the skill and the Mime copying both) castings of each skill per cycle. You can RAPIDLY knock enemy speed to 1 and yours to insanity. Then have the bards both doing healing, and the dancers doing damage. It's minimal, but again, FOUR hits of each each 'round' of your characters due to the mime. It's like a hyper whole map regen, and hyper-unblockable-unmitigatable-100%accurate whole map hitting damage over time. And with the speed buff and debuff lead in, the enemy will never go again before you have decimated the entire map. Its honestly pretty funny to do at least once.

I used a Lancer to solo that fight wehre the team starts on the outside of a gate, and Ramza starts on the inside with Gafgarion as an enemy, and has to open the gate to reunite with the others. Every time I jumped, every enemy would just skip their turns for lack of a target until the Lancer came crashing down, and then it was his turn again. Rinse and repeat.

I did the same, but for the fight against Wiegraf because I was awfully underleveled and didn't feel like grinding before fighting him. (I got a game over the first 3 times, thinking I could survive with only auto-potion, then scrapped that save file for another one that was one chapter before so I could make Ramza a dragoon and survive that way.)

I built a mod way back where I tried to fix a lot of classes. Buffed/nerfed stats of classes, weapons, abilities. Biggest change was to archer, I turned them into a red mage kind of. Buffed bow damage and gave the class the lower level magic of all the magic classes. Made them super viable. Cure 1+2, fire 1+2, haste, slow, raise.

Been playing this game since release and I don’t get the black mage love. Only time I have used the black mage is when I am doing an all magic playthrough and it’s far more difficult than an all melee playthrough. You went into depth with the lancer about the time it takes and missing the enemy but the black mage is this x100. If I cast on a tile it might miss the enemy, if I cast on the enemy it might hit my party when they move. Black mage being within 3 tiers of the monk is blasphemy. The monk will kill 3 enemies before the black mage can even get off its first spell. Black mage is only useful if you are trying to handicap yourself for a challenge playthrough.

On dark knight: if I recall their hp growth isn’t great so they actually don’t even grow much better than knights. They have crazy good base stats though. And if you want a dark knight without overleveling or having to use de-levelers and also at the start of the game it is possible. It is a crazy grind though using party members shared JP to get JP without xp. Basically you take what char you want to be dark knight + the rest of your party as black mages, then incapacitate an enemy and have all the black mages go on a punch fest to each other while your future dark knight just passes turn. Then repeat for all the other jobs required. I had a dark knight by act 2 this way

Level up to ninja or samurai. Get dual wield or two hand. Revert back to knight for the stat growth and strength buff. With two hands you have a wrecking machine. With dual weild you can break everyone's weapons. Also with all the movement classes you'll have to take, you'll get the movement stat buff, the attack buff, equip save the queen and excalibur, and heavy armor.

Unkillable Ramza Class: Monk 2A : Guts/Mettle R: Counter attack U: Two Swords M: Life Font (not required, move +2 also acceptable, or ignore elevation, move find item, etc etc...) A nifty trick with the Monk, is that they increase their HP/MP heal amount as they increase attack power. This the setup I use to annihilate Wiegraf in what is probably the hardest fight in the game. Makes it laughably easy.

I think the hottest take was Mediator as C. I'm always sad when I've mastered Chemist or Mediator as it means I feel the need to change their job. Also, a fun (but not time efficient) thing is to make Ramza a Bard (never tried Mimic) and have four Dancers all with the invisibility reaction doing the damaging dance since continuing a song or dance (at least in the PS1 version, don't know if this was changed in WotL) doesn't break invisibility.

Quick Charge and Teleport on a Summoner will let them teleport to a position that can target the whole enemy team and then get the spell off before any of them move out of the way.

Why even use swiftness/quick charge? It's 1000 cost is as bad as halve mp. Just gauge for speed like golem to protect for humans and once ifrit is power crept, switch to arcane strength faster white mage who can one shot with holy at faster speed without swiftness, which also won't work with archers, bards and dancers, who get power crept late game without some help. Let alone open the gate to instant stronger iaido/speechcraft or defense boost or the manafont/mana shield combo, which time mage is great with good magic attack and gravity is a poor man's invigoration but can still 4 shot at decent speed compared to slower, stronger black mage spells when gaffgarion ambushes, when ch 1 owns with those basic fire spells even from all magic classes.

Dunno if it's a version difference thing, but Lancers had 100% hit rate back when I used them. And once you learn how to calculate when they land, it's not really a gamble at all. I'd bump archers up for the same reason- just insanely good for killing enemy mages while they charge. Also, unlike calculators, you can just skip most of their skills, as only the highest ones count (to be fair all calculators need is CT5). Oh, and dragoon spirit is awesome because the reraise status is bonkers. I'd bump Time Mage up a notch just for Teleport alone. Best movement skill in the game bar none, it's basically fly, ignore height and Move +3 all rolled into one, it's failure rate is really low unless you move a lot farther than your movement range, and even then it's not risky if you plan to have viable actions whether you move or not. I'd swap Summoner and black mage. Summoner has more utility (Golem is busted), and can make good use of targetting allies that then run into enemy crowds before the spell goes off. Black mage is great damage, but Summoner is just better because it always has something extremely useful to do, even when a black mage can't safely get into range. Generally a good list! I'd place everything a bit different, but I think everything was within 1 tier of where I'd put it myself.

Archer is always so underrated. Get concentrate and you have super consistent ranged dps. You don't even need to charge (though having the option is better than not of course). You get a pair of archers set up in a position and don't move them for their 20 bonus CT per turn and they'll just shred enemies with their regular attacks. Even moreso once you get some speed boosting gear since long bows scale with speed, you'll be doing more damage and doing it more frequently. Definitely not a thief tier class.

I teach my whole party Accumulate for the early JP grind. Barehanded Ninja is probably the most broken thing in the game.

Yup, Accumulate being so good, Squire just can't be in D, especially with Gained JP Up. They're not above B Tier, but I'd rank them as high as Knights or Archers. Throw Stone or Dash can also be good skills that either cause fall damage or outright cancel the enemies' charges. The other thing I disagree with is Thief. Steal Heart is very powerful and the class has great movement, speed and evasion. Move+2 is also a great movement skill. Definitely not worse than Archers and Bards. I would rank them as high as Lancers, Knights and Squires.

Twist headband would be a fun exception, like when reversing to a brawler ninja that already has dual wield, and the higher speed lets them steal better while having a cheaper throw than needing shockwave (which tailwind spam does godly throw damage 😂 like how it makes Mustadio's snipe work to say why let Balthier keep his Ras Algethi lol). Not sure if concentration on a monk would stack with their innate brawler, but their movement isn't as high and steel to buff bravery is mandatory given shout is self and praise can miss half the time. Does help to note these downsides to certain builds that need a party to support. Though squire's fundaments helps a ton early game as stone is the most broken jp farming move (after Ramza's tailwind/steel/shout) which monk buffs as well as counter tackle, to level up the chemist this vid puts in a much higher tier, as ch 1 and before late ch 2 doesn't give them guns. At least Equip Heavy Armor has some use between the monk and Reis, which yeah Counter > first strike that only works on cancelling humans but for quadruple the price.

Alternatively, jump won't miss and casting protect before is great too. Always buy that bracer lol +3 attack is also what makes Orlandeau in ch 4 strong let alone haste Excalibur.

@elcypher6102 I do feel it's my responsibility to say balthier breaks reequip with his Speed (it is life insurance for protection vs cheap debuff monsters like mindflayer) and the best barrage at any distance (Javelin II is easy 800 guaranteed damage with his gun at least 400, and his speed helps combo with mustadio if ya wanna disable/immobilize), while plundering rares lol. Yeah they're both God tier (if Balthier has critical: recover hp innate from monk growth, I feel he can beat Orlandeau), with Reis once you know her passives since beastmaster helps a ton for dark behemoth (check my moveset vid for almagest for wide instant area of effect damage equal to what hp it lost) and those tiamats as well as vampire cat. And don't get me started on holy breath that embarrass Rapha and Marach. Reis' Tame can also help recruit as well given dual wield for equip swords. Though I generally kill monsters or miss so it is a gamble, but better than invite 30%. I do feel embarrassed I wasted time experimenting with dark and onion knights when these guys can equip with better stats (Reis is limited but equip Heavy Armor is a defensive build that works for her speed, unlike knights without Excalibur and samurais).

I remember going back Squire during chapter 4 on Ramza. Dual wielding knight swords + the clothes that offer attribute boosts to STR was insane. Even a generic squire could be better than half that list. Just throw a knight sword on them and they're better than half that list. Lets not forget about their skill Accumulate. Hands down the best leveling tool in the game.

Not gonna lie, 4 double punch monks with blade grasp and minimal faith along with a ninja with item and throw potion is devastating. Especially with earth clothes, where you can line up and earth slash. Mediator isn't great on its own, but adjusting your brave and faith permanently is a must-have! The one advantage bard has over dancer is move+3.

Some tips for Lancer or dragoon. You can count when it jump will land. There is a mechanism that all the magic, summon, jump, or other that have the cast time, will happen after all character move is end. This mechanism can only broke by haste, slow, and other ability that change the speed of character.

Mime in D? While I disagree with that personally, I can see why it's there. Mime has, hands-down, the highest learning curve of any Job/Class in the game (arguably of in ANY unit in ANY turn-based tactical-RPG) and trash-tier availability. This is especially troublesome when the comically overpowered and equally overused smoothbrain job that is Calculator exists and is much more readily accessible than Mime. (it's used in the FFT any% speedrun for a reason) In terms of JP/Job levels, by the time you can get one Mime you can have 3 Calculators ready to pass their busted ass Math Skill over to a better caster class. All that said, in terms of raw power, Mime is VERY powerful when used correctly...of course, therein lies the rub. Mime is the weirdest class in the game because it doesn't behave like you think it does and merely copy abilities, it copies abilities with their VECTORS relative to the Mime (where the Mime is facing MATTERS more than ever) and wrapping your head around that in conjunction with ability targeting restrictions (Verticality, immunities, etc) makes it a challenging Job to use for even very experienced players of FFT. ...But then again, that is also the main source of fun for Mime, and nothing else in any other tactics game comes close to it for that kind of complexity vs reward. Multiplying your action economy on its own is strong in any turn-based game. Improving the qualitative value of those actions is strong. Mime does both at the same time, but you really have to think about their placement and risk since they can't use equipment. The most smoothbrain auto-win combo with Mime is a Dance-off team, so that every time a Dance is used, a Mime will copy that Dance. Because Mimes have exceptionally high base MA, PA stats AND innate Concentrate, when they copy any ability (including Dance) it's more likely to land than any other generic class. Since the Dances are global range auto-targeted effects that for all practical purposes, cannot be blocked* (other than the base effect missing on its own) it gets out of control very fast, especially if you lead off with Slow Dance to abuse the time mechanics (same reason Yell is busted). (*technically, Sleep status blocks the effects of Dance, but an enemy under Sleep is already in a really place already) But other Mime combinations like Double Draw-Out, Double Sing, Summon, Accumulate and lots of hilarious trick-shot shenanigans involving Bows/Guns and Time Magic (my personal favorite) work amazingly well. It is absolutely the best class for creative strategy and a gift for anyone who has sunk absurd sums of time into replaying FFT to the point where they've done basically everything. Sorry for the wall of text, but Mime really is that complex and quite strong...but FFT is also full of things that steamroll the game for far less effort. (Ninjas, Monks, Calculators, Black Mage...Or Orlandeau, who is arguably the single most OP ANYTHING just handed to the player in any RPG that isn't some glorified cutscene/plot weapon)

I think the mime/mimic is paradoxically calculator AND D tier. The fact that they can mimic any ability in the game made by allied units and use the same equips for that attack is amazing-there is a huge that huge caveat where they cannot equip things on their own and have a tremendous learning curve. Not to mention that it takes a lot to unlock the class and requires so much support to be functional. I think it is genuinely one of the most fun and better classes with proper support. But it asks way too much of the player and is straight up impractical to use. It deserves d tier overall just because its too much for what might be zero payoff

I understand that this guide likely speaks to each in a vacuum; but you should really try a team comp of 1 bard, 2 dancers, and 2 mimes. Tripling every bard song and dancer effect will result in immediately winning maps before any combat really happens. I personally like to use magic or phys boosts while the dancers decimate the enemy team globally with infinitely scaling damage.

I remember back in the days, what we always did was grind on the first green spot til we had a black mage with calculation, and a load of monks with blade grasp/two swords/move+3. Then slowly replace the monks with the unique classes because they're shiny. This was like 20 years ago.

Knights are amazing for farming JPs. Their breakskills are there to make sure enemy are lock into place while you accumulate, yell, throw stone and such haha

Bard is calc tier fight me. His bad stat growths are only present if you are leveling up to it if you swap to it at level 50 it can make a D tier unit solo the game.

You have not lived til you have put a mimic in a party with bard and dancer. Every round you get 2 turns to activate bard song and dancer and 2 turns with whatever other job you put in. In multiplayer this job is a beast, I dominated every match with 2 mimics, a bard, a dancer, and a calculator. In my opinion this is a calculator tier. I understand what you are talking about with but having to set up if you are primarily using melee attacks, but you ignore the fact that it adds 4 more actions every round (round defined as the time it takes to get through all of your characters.)

You know what I loved to do? Build up to samurai, get the unlocks, swap them to black mage with teleporter, and then laugh as i teleport in and do a sword draw (counts as magic, so black mage basically deletes everything with it). Has smart targeting so you dont even need to care about hitting allies.

the Calculator tier is a legit take. theres beating the game handily, and then theres purposefully avoiding certain story points in order to grind the jobs, breed mindflayers, get to the bottom of the dungeon, have a geomancer with find item walk up the volcano to get ragnarok for cloud, etc. its not a certain situation but a certain playthrough that makes that kind of class as powerful as it can be

Just finished watching the video. As someone whos played FFT and cleared it an ungodly amount of times since I bought it for the PS1 in 1998, I'm pretty particular with the classes I use. Based off of your tier list, the pattern I see is of low effort and max reward for your classes in order to obtain S tier. Classes like Calculator, Ninja, and Summoner are there precisely as an reward for putting in the grind and effort. I don't include Dark Knight or onion knight in there as I prefer the PS1 version to the WOTL version. Calculator does not need a rebalancing, if anything, we need more content to unlessh its power. Its a JRPG, and a strategic one at that. We came precisely for the grind so we can taste the power. Can't have a 9999 per hit Omnislash if you're not willing to put in the time. Now taste this height prime number Flare while I read a book. Thanks for the video.❤

fun list. for me the grind for the OP classes didn't matter. I was obsessed with grinding for classes when I played this game and spend way more time on the very first free fight power grinding then I care to admit.

I always loved that they made Ramza's squire class more useful and let him possibly learn Ultima if you knew how to get it. Didn't make his version that much better overall, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The problem with the Oracle/Mystic, is that im HOPING to put a status effect than GUARANTEED low-high damage. Unless it’s the Deep Dungeon, or im stealing, or waiting on crystals, it’s not worth it IMO, Beowulf is better cause he does his stuff when you tell him, so no waiting & you can keep on giving the pain. But I haven’t played FFT at all in about 15-20 years now, so im working on dated memory, but I feel like im still accurate enough on them.

The main component to spell accuracy is Faith; the average of the caster AND the target are used to modify the spell's base accuracy. (along with MA bumps and Zodiac shenanigans). So using a Mediator (Orator) to pump up your caster's base Faith will result in a DRAMATIC improvement on spell accuracy. Just don't push their PERMANENT Faith above 94, or they will leave to find God on their own. (except Ramza; he will never leave due to these stats because you are effectively 'him' in the story). You will get warnings in the form of the unit giving a quote after each battle when their Brave is [6 - 16] or when their Faith is [85 - 94]. So the simple version for minimal hassle is to level Faith up to 84 and Brave to 97 on anyone who isn't going to be a designated Item Finder in the Deep Dungeon. By doing this, you will find most spell effects (good or bad) will land far more often and it dramatically improves both Oracle and Beowulf.

It's so easy to set up though. There is a glitch that can give you max job points for the classes that matter. I had a calculator online by the middle of chapter 2. You can just use use the squire ability to make their speed insane and just have it punch someone a bunch. Doesn't take a horrible amount time. If you don't use the glitch, it takes forever.

Hmm, just started a new playthrough for the first time in a few years and I did not know about dual wielding monks after several playthroughs. Ramsa is gonna be so over powered now. My current party is monk ninja ninja dragoon dragoon.

I gotta say, I'm no expert but I'd give Geomancer an A (or at least B+). The tiles thing can be a problem sometimes, but I think it's quite a versatile job because of all they can do for free. Besides, the amount of times I won a stage by killing 1 or 2 enemies, and stopping/petrifying the rest in one or two Geo spell casts, is high. Also, about Mimics, I used to grind JPs by having a bard, dancer and mimic in my party (or characters with their labilities, don't remember). Every bard turn = two speed buff, and every dancer turn = two speed debuff. That would make a great gap in speed between my party and the enemies, and I could simply grind whatever I wanted freely.

Bard and dancer are definitely Calculator tier. You can use bard to buff your speed and dancer to debuff enemy speed. Then using Ramza guts skills to increase speed you can literally go 6 to 7 times in a row before an enemy can even get another turn

I feel like the biggest issue with Bard and Dancer is that their strength can depend heavily on the battlefield. For how amazing they are in battles that start out slow, I feel like if it's a very condensed battlefield, they don't have enough time for their abilities to be particularly useful.

My favorite dumb strategy I used was all Mystic with Item and Item throw. Constant Corruption until it hits, then throw a Phoenix Down. It's not super efficient, but, so fun.

This is favorite game of all time and all I do is prioritize unlocking bard and dancer and slowly “mince” the enemy while one bard increases attack and the other increases speed. Tons of JP to build other classes and you can just afk the whole time while they sing and dance

Coming from 1.3 veteran there still is a couple combos that work in the base game that a lot of people would never think of. Thief + Equip Spear = If you do not like daggers and want damage but still be able to steal this is VERY viable. Can sub Jump or whatever you need with HP Restore or Hamedo for hilarity. Chemist(any squishy class) + Equip Armor = Works really well with chemist I assume they still have Innate Matinence which turns them into walking tanks. -Two Swords + Battle Skill on a ranged unit such as Mustadio = Mobile break unit who gets double break chances- *Edit = Only works in CCP and in 1.3

I love Tactics! Such an underrated game! GRINDING TIP, for XP and JP... Kill all but one weak enemy. Then gather your team in a plus sign (+) configuration. Then you just take turns attacking and healing your own characters!... having Item, Item Throw, and Rock Throw abilities on as many characters as possible will make it a lot easier

Summoner does take a long time to get online BUT the IFF in this game is very forgiving. So much so, you can cast a summon on your ninja, have them go invisible then run deep into enemy crowd. Very funny and effective 😊

Man, I feel like you kinda did Mediator dirty. Praise & Solution are amazing for permanently boosting brave and lowering faith, and IIRC they're the only way to get monsters on your team, which is huge. The fact that you can invite/train a tier 1 enemy, run back and forth between cities for a little bit, eventually get multiple tier 3 variants of that enemy, and then poach them can get you some ridiculous gear for where you are in the story. Honestly even just the fact that you get Equip Gun from them should land them in at least C tier by itself, but if you really abuse a Mediator I think they're an A tier class just because of the way they can kinda break the game open through invite/poach exploitation. Also is there another way to permanently boost brave? I think Oracle can lower it, but do they have a spell that boosts it too? Mediator might have a monopoly on that too, but it's been a long time since I played so I'm not really sure there.

Anything that can survive that 13th Zodiac sign dungeon and find all those broken weapons( like extra God Save The Queens, Ragnaroks, and Elemental Guns) is a must. Holy crap that gave me and my buddy fits back I'm the days. Edit: Ninjas also get catch. Theres an encounter wjere youll fight 1 female ninja and like 10 male ninja and they throw high level/late game weapons.

Only change I'd make is put mime in calculator tier. It doesn't have the jp grind of the other 3, but when used correctly it basically gives you a second of whatever without the massive time/jp investment of having 2 characters in the same class. Summoner + mine is probably the easiest way to use them to obliterate the battlefield.

Oracle over Geomancer, bold choice! I've always had trouble with the oracle landing their magic attacks and a geomancer using an axe and attacking from behind seems more valuable than oracle's pole, to me at least.

My favorite FFT moment was the first time i fought the oldest brother. I saw the map preview and all the mages and went "absolutely not". I went to my dual fist ninja/monk and equipped ignore height. Instakilled big bro and ignored the whole gauntlet. I one playthrough sat on the plains right at the game start and grinded out a calculator for my playthrough. It took forever but man, did it make allll the "Those fights" sweet revenge. Get isnta Holy ed nerdssss

You don't stress one of the other key appeals of a Monk: They can heal MP! I'm fact, they are only one of two classes who can (ignore Dark Knight because it only applies to itself). The other class who can heal MP is Chemist, and they technically can't until Chapter 2 when Ethers are available in the shop. But with Monk? You can start healing MP from the get go! Every mage not using Math Skill absolutely needs MP for everything, as well as units using Manashield. Even Beowulf would appreciate an MP healer (there aren't always enemies to MP drain from). Bard has one big advantage over the Dancer: it teaches Move+3, pretty much the best movement ability for every male. Females need the Dark Knight class to learn Move+3, which is a longer grind to get than Bard/Dancer.

So from an FFT vet, the original Ps1 version, not WotL, I always ended up skipping over buff/debuff classes outside of unlocking the higher damage classes because of the Zodiac system. I dont know if WotL had that system in place as well, as i have never played it, but i feel it is a point worth bringing up that in the original PS1 era, if you did not understand, or you did not want to try and bring team synergy with the signs into play, having your say time mage try to cast haste or slow on ally or enemy alike would sometimes become infuruiating because the chances for it to hit could become really really hard. Having equipment that auto cast the abilities too, like Exclaibur for example, would make certain classes that you maybe used as a crutch just not matter.

Bard and Dancer are used for stat grinding. Their stat growth is so terrible, you hit them with a friendly mindflayer to de-level them with minimal stat loss. Then use the Mime for its insane stat growth to level back up to 100 for massive gains. This is also useful since if you have someone with Bard and Dancer skills, the mime will copy them. So you can double up the buffs and debuffs while you level many levels in a single fight. If you don't ever grind at all, these classes are definitely not great. but if you plan to even do that 100 -> 1 -> 100 leveling scheme once for each 'main' character, you will be way better off. I typically do that once for each of my main characters and also use ninja. Speed stat is THE KING stat and Ninja growth for it, on top of mime growth, its easy mode for the rest of the game. watching your tier lists for this game it doesn't seem like you do any of those things, you just play it straight forward without much grinding (I'm not criticizing that). But if you did, you would have very different thoughts on these.

Monk + accumulate/focus = 999 damage after turn 30 or so. (At any level) White mages can cast protect/shell, getting you through extremely difficult areas of the game quite easily. Especially with a Monk available to recover their MP so they have a 100% up time. Tailwind/yell is infinitely superior to a time mage (although TM makes the exploit go faster)

I think the main thing that hurts oracle is just Beowulf. In a void it has objective uses and sticks are nice as you say. But Beowulf just makes them redundant and irrelevant. I have a lot of other thoughts too on how certain classes are better “carriers” while other classes might have great skills but have a mediocre stat spread/ “chassis” to use them from. You made it clear you didn’t want the list to be too complex and I think that’s fair overall, but I do think samurai is the absolute mvp of this. Draw out is so damn good, but as you mention it’s so much better on other classes- not just priest but ramza squire, geomancer, and basically any mage. I do feel black mage is really kneecapped late game by their charge speeds. You can and should get short charge but it’s a cross class skill and again that’s a whole rabbit hole you can go down, and it feels a little weird to embrace this while saying most other cross class combos are banned. Ngl feels a bit like GF bias man :p Chemist also feels a bit odd to me. They’re good, and guns come in right in time to save them, but meh stat growths, limited damage from guns, limited inventory for items while being nowhere near as powerful as draw out… they aren’t bad but top of D just feels like a stretch to me. I know a lot of people used to adore them wayyyy back on the fft gamefaqs forums though so you definitely aren’t alone in your stance.

The JP skill glitch in the original game made math skills go from busted to disgustingly busted, with how much was compatible with it Mapwide Flares and Frog were all the rage for me in the second half

Squire is OP Only class abilities that allow you to take a character from 1-99 in a single battle without using items or MP (accumulate/focus) Of course, in WotL you can pick up Ramza 2 (Luso) and cut the time to level a character up like that in no time. The only issue with Squires, is that unique characters don't get these amazing OP skills.

If you are not afraid of auto-battle, the best way i know to grind is placing as second job, 2 black mages with frog, and 2 knights with attack break and speed break... transform every enemies into frogs while the knights reduces their attacks to 1 hp, then turn your party into frogs that deal 1 hp... just makes sure that a monk ramza keeps everybody (the enemies too... watch out for enemies wizards that know frog) at full health... when everybody is a frog that hit at 1 hp, the enemies have their speed reduced to 1 but still your party speed is still normal (or at 2 or 3 for more efficency)... then finaly... embrace the frog and empty your wizards mp by casting frog in a empty corner... then... let auto battle do its thing... (gain jp up is a must to every party members by the way)... put your controller on the table and go for a nice sleep... next morning, 99% of the times (if you made it good setup), all your characters that have participated to the battle should be masters in their current jobs and have 9999jp to spend...

I generally don't abuse the game's autoplay function. But if it suits you then have at it. I once played a game where i could only "play" ramza and the other members were always auto play. All i could do was skills and equipment. That was really fun.

@@cloviepounders6703 note that i only do that at the begining of the game, only to unlock all jobs and then i play normaly for the rest of the game, since the random encounters are always matching my levels, i use "level break" (i dont remember who get the ability) to make the stories harder...

You take Squire and accumulate until you master every class. You can literally master a class every combat. Squire is amazing. Sitting in Squire, maybe not, but Squire's skills are chef's kiss.

This. Squire literally allows you to power level through accum + gained jp up. you can just cycle with 1 npc left in a fight and spam it over and over and get multiple levels in a single fight. it was always faster than grinding fight after fight. AT LEAST gained jp up is required.

Mimes are very good physical damage dealers (on par or better than monks, bare handed) and solid tanky units, with good move, natural concentrate, and natural beastmaster to boot. Even without taking their stat growth into account they can easily hold their own in a fight, they're just a little boring while they do it. Obviously once stat growth comes into effect they're arguably calculator tier classes (the stat growth is *busted*), but most get the class too late to take full advantage of that. Even so I'd argue they're *at worst* a C level character, mostly due to the investment you need to make to unlock them in the first place.

I would have put mediator higher, you can turn an enemy into a friendly unit from early game. -1 for enemy team, +1 for your team. that is kind of huge all throughout the game. instantly turns unfair battles into easy ones. the sleep skill "Mimic Daravon" calculates chances differently than the debuff/buff skills. it's possible to put 5 targets to sleep with a 100% chance. this can make early game JP/XP grinding way easier
